A walk around Garston in South Liverpool with some local history and nostalgia from the 1970's. Includes King Street with the old Tan Yard, and the docks. St. Mary's Road and Speke Road. The Matchworks and South Parkway.
Filmed during February and March 2022. Some memories of John Colliers mens outfitters shop from the 1970's.

Excellent ! I lived in Chapel Road for 25 years, before moving to Thailand in 2005, and have never been back. So much has changed, but great to see so many things of the good old days still going strong. 👍.

Oh man, how things have changed, I left the 'pool in the late seventies, I never lived in Garston but spent most of my childhood there mainly at Garston Baths. My grandparents had an affinity with Garston Swimming Club, grandad was cheif coach and grandma was secretary, the baths had two pools 'big' and 'small' (that's what they were called). They also had public 'baths' individual ones for the workers, there were lots of them too, I also think there was a laundry there. I too worked in Garston at Lennons supermarket part time when still at school happy days.

I think lots of swimming baths had individual baths and laundries back in the day as most houses didn't have those facilities.

@@Jeff1photo You are correct, I remember mainly the elderly used them, they where kept in pristine condition the cubicles where painted in a light blue, the taps and pipes where brass and highly polished, the punters where provided soap and towels too,

A very intersting trip down memory lane. I lived nearby Garston in the 1950s. I remember the market and shivering in Garston baths. Sad to see so much in decline. Thanks Jeff for video and all your info.

Another really enjoyable video. In the early 60s we had a school annex at Garston and I spent a lot of time in the area. I always liked the place and have memories and stories around every corner. Sorry to see the Garston Baths have gone. A well spent 34 minutes watching this! Thank you for all your efforts and for posting this.

Your knowledge of local history is impressive and your personal anecdotes tell a story of another time. So interesting. My days in Liverpool go back several decades - I remember very well the Bryant & May factory and Speke airport. Remember Starways anyone? Flew on them more than once. Thank you for videos, Jeff.

I grew up 'under the bridge' 1970s - 1990s. I lived in the 'Tennies' for a short while too. I now live in Bristol (moved 1999). After serving my apprenticeship at Gostin of Liverpool, I eventually worked at a small firm in Garston Industrial Estate. All this footage and old pictures brings back memories; mixed feelings associated with those memories. It's a shame to see how the old buildings have been razed and replaced with new. I wonder if there could have been some sensitive re-purposing of them (thinking about Garston Hotel). I still have family in Garston so I will always visit. Appreciate the time, effort and historical thought that'a gone into your video. Regards Tony

I loved in Speke from 1955 when it was a good place to live, I travelled on the 82C to Blackburn House Hifh School in Liverpool 8 and loved it. I remember travelling through Garston past Bryant and May then on past Woolworths which sold household items like paint abd brushes etc. The swimming baths was opposite on the other side of the road. We went to these baths weekly from school. As the bus continued its journey there was another Woolworths about a bus stop further on which sold everything else such as toys, pencils, books, wash powder. Miss those days.

Thanks for the memory jolt, I worked as a TV engineer in the 60's and garston was a place I went to quite regular because down by the dock area the TV reception was dreadful with one street name burnt in my memory VULCAN Street. At one time I had a flat in Island Road over a pub on my last Visit to Liverpool I found Vulcan street and the pup no longer exist. What you called the tenee's the name Speak Road Gardens come to mind well it did keep me fit lugging my tool box up all those stairs. Like your good self I to could not work out where the TV showroom was in that row of shops to.

Really loved this…thank you. I grew up in Grassendale Park and would wander round Garston and the docks as a kid in the early 80’s doing sketches and exploring. Then I lived in Ebrington Street just near Garston Library when I was at uni much later. There was also the Dunlop Factory where the match works are. Lots of memories. I’m really missing my home town at the moment so this was a great trip down memory lane.

My mum grew up on Window Lane and one day she let my nan have a go on her bicycle and she took off and went right into the gas works as she couldn't figure out how to use the handbrakes to stop (1950s), the guard at the front chased her in and finally helped her get control of the bike. Lots of great memories coming over and spending summers with my family "Under the Bridge".

I found this video very interesting, A lot has changed since i was last here but real improvement . You mention about the bank front, yes that ws the bank and then you had the public toilets, The swimming baths, a yard for some haulage company then the bus station and on the corner of Horrocks Avenue you had the Job centre , opposite you had lennons supermarket, You had Garston Market at the rear of the Tram or bus station, My wife went to Blessed John Almonds school off Horrocks Avenue. I also used to visit The Palentine as did my father on his way home fom work, I had an Uncle & Aunt lived a few houses down Island Rd. I also had my wedding reception at Haig house opposite the Cenotaph. I have been twice to South Parkway since it opened, we used the park and ride and again on the underground line just before covid. Both my parents and grandparents are buried at Springwood, I have a neice that works at a store in Hunts Cross near Springwood and still does, The football stand you showed was the South Liverpool Football club next to the old allerton station. going towards Banks Rd before the car bridge was built on the right was a rowf shops, one was a funeral directors and just before the railway was a garage that later became a steel fabricators, My Neice's husband worked there. I have too many to mention. When some of the relatives moved to Speke we used to visit them on the bus and the road had these strange looking road light that looked like robots and had an orange glow about them at night. My eldest sister lives off springwood near woolton rd, I know nothing of Hunts Cross apart from the shops and where Rita Tushingham lived, I knew my way around but not the names of the roads. Also down past the Gasworks you had the bottle works and Kings Brewery. I knew a lot of People on Window Lane like York St and other cathedral names, I can't remember the name of the club on Window Lane but i had a mate from holmes St that was a bouncer on the door. My roots are all linked to Wavertree, Edge Hill, Park Rd and Garston, I have a son who doesn't know any of these places at all or been to them.

Another great video Jeff, I think next to Garson baths stood a bus garage. My first job was a telephone engineer based at cressington exchange just a little further on from Sedona Road. First job of the day was a visit to the cafe on Window Lane. My Grandfather worked at Francis Morton’s that became the Gaston Bottle Works I think, he was head buyer for Morton’s until closure. My Grand parents lived in Milnthorpe Street to the left of St Francis church and both my mother and aunt both married in St Michaels church “under the bridge” 10 years apart.

I think you're right about the bus garage being next to the baths👍

I just realised that wall is not a bank, That's the entrance to the baths up the steps, it's the narrowest part of the pavement, to the right was a garage and the toilets, opposite was Tesco's on the corner.
