The industrial building was the wash house my mum took us kids every week and we played in a waiting room next to the washing area we watched as the women helped each order after drying their washing, great fun . We used to have twin kit kits a lovely threat, the pubs were the glass house , paraffin oil ( the queens) and in st oswalds Street was tge omni bus, we would get the tram for a penny to dovecote baths. Great video
@ martinsallenger. No the meccano was on Binns Lane with a few other factorys such as Crawfords Biscuits, Robinson Willy was the other side of Rathbone Road and they made their own gas fittings for their fires, the main entrance led to an area full of lathes where thousands of parts a day was turned out, at the rear was their foundry, towards the end a lot of the female workers took out claims for compensation for crippled fingers constantly using pliers for snipping parts, Mecano was no better and workers suffered skin disorders from the lubrication oil, Plessy's too had ongoing claims but not sure what for. I must admit though, St Oswalds was still standing the last time I visited the area, If I visit Liverpool I enter via Runcorn Bridge to Hunts Cross or by train, I never venture out to the old parts to see what's new.
Thanks Jeff. Many of my presents as a kid were seconds from that factory. The slightest imperfection destined the model for the staff shop and onwards to my stocking courtesy of some distant Aunty. Never knew where the site was till now.
The pub on the corner (now a' hotel') was The Paraffin Oil Shop (once called The Queens Arms) a real dive - that I had many a pint in (in my misspent youth).
That's a nice reminder, I had forgotten about Hurst Gardens , St Oswalds Gardens was more prominant being a shopping area, What was the tallest building in Liverpool back in the late 60's 216ft tall but now gone? I bet that's forgotton too, all in favour of the M62,
Hi Jeff, definitely, the pub on the corner can't remember the name l remember Hurst Gardens. There was also a block of flats where Tesco is now in the Old Swan,l did work in Robinson Willy's a long time ago, was this the old Meccano site ? thanks Jeff 👍
The way the tower was demolished means no original bricks was salvaged to restore it to grade 2 in my opinion, I doubt it will ever look the same again. It was a landmark in it's day mainly for the clock and then it became an eyesore or an embarrasment for many who don't remember those days or wasn't around. I grew up seeing that tower almost everyday but our generation have mostly passed on and modern buildings are popping up everywhere and I feel that building will dissapear as we knew it from some excuse or other to make way for the next generation growing up. Nobody remembers the Festival held there and prob won't remember the tower in a few years to come. Sad but progress never stops for anyone.
Great update Jeff yeah I heard the clock tower part getting demolished like the end of an era. Sad to see it coming down. I remember the awful fire a few years ago. Let’s hope they rebuild the tower.
Those are places I also remember Jeff...I too was born in Sefton General Hospital...way back in 1949, I lived with my mum in her eldest sisters house on Liffey Street...so I do remember bus rides to Penny Lane, and Wavertree road shops, and into Liverpool many times before Mum and me "emigrated" to a flat in Kirkby when I was 7 in 1956 to start a new chapter "IN MY LIFE"...thanks for sparking the memories Jeff...I always enjoy your videos...👍🏻
My Mum used to visit the Magnet Butty Shop when she worked before marrying and raising a family as was the norm in the 1950s. It was in the Lord Street / Dale Street area. The owner recognised her when she took me to get a pie in the late 60s. Anyone remember it?
Hello Jeff, i do love the extended videos you do of your city. I when i use to visit in the early 90's i stayed in a B&B on mount pleasant virtually opposite the place John Lennon got married, forgot what it was called looks like it's no longer there but great video many thanks.
It's the arcade in a building in water street I believe, as kids in early 80s it was open but not to that splendor. As a side note, I recall hearing about a soft of reservoir, spring type thing under a building in the area but can't find anything online now? Thank you. Hope I'm correct about mall. Is it same one that had a post office in? Cheers
Hi Jeff, I didn't know that there was an arcade l can't even remember what was the shop in front of building shame it's all closed up be great to see it thanks 👍
I've never ever been in that arcade, The structure you mentioned on Harrington St was the stores cafe and toilets and the escalator took you back to the store, was it BHS back then when the extension was built, wasn't many toiletes around back then apart from lewis 's top floor and littlewoods basement
Looks like that lego building on Lord Street, another like it in Hanover Street but its more of a market like they did with the co-op dairy on east prescot road
I love these little tours of our city and surroundings. It gives another perspective and a chance to see things we might otherwise not notice. I also find the pace really relaxing. It is not bludgeoning and bloated, like a lot of other tours, where information is force-fed.
I was born in 1964 and I have childhood memories of the old central station , I imagine seeing a steam engine. Was that possible? I guess to remember something like that I’d have to be at least 2. And down at the river I think I remember overhead frames which had to be part of the OV. Was I imaging this? Obviously my family was telling me stuff when I was a baby/small child. But did I possibly see these things?
Hi Jeff...once again another interesting and informative video. Nice to see my old employer of 28 years the University of Liverpool buildings too. My Grandad (my Mum's dad) was treated back in 87 in the old Royal. Many memories of going to ward 10A to see him 😢 Simon D (retired librarian)
Thanks Jeff, nice to see the old police station again, Did you know it was featured in The Boys from The Blackstuff series during the restoration to a workshop for different crafts, My friend rented the full basement for his woodworking and i managed to remove the oak shelves before the work started, I made a few things myself there. You say the new Hospital has 40 less beds and you'll find it's plenty with all the new the technology they have, your only in 6 days for open heart surgery, 5 days if they get you walking early enough. that's if they do heart surgery there, they did in the other and you was in for 2 weeks or more, My mother died in the other one. that was my last time there. Did we pass Norton St in that video, so much has changed?.
My Uncle, Philip Ninion Smith, born 1929 was executed with Midazolam in the Royal in May 2020. They had to test him 3 times to obtain permission for the desired outcome. I was not allowed to see him.
That's very sad. My mates Dad had the same last month. After a few days in hospital, he wanted his care to be stopped, then suddenly, the next day he's gone.
@@Jeff1photo He was a porter in the Maternity Hospital. He just had a urinary infection at the wrong time. Took 3 corvid tests to get a positive then they isolated and killed him, sorry they made him "comfortable"
Hi Jeff, so many changes to the area didn't recognise some of the new buildings,l used to work around there in the 80s, some great old pubs top of London Road by the Prince of Wales Thanks Jeff great video 👍
