I've always felt that the guitar solo in this song is more emotional than the lyrics. I cannot say why, but somehow Gary managed to put the same feelings in his playing as in the words.
If you think about it, the feelings can be expressed in many different ways. When you are emotional, and you want to share it, your choice of words will be affected. For a musician going ad-lib, it is the same principle. But instead of using words, he uses notes, intervals, strum patterns, arpeggi. He is doing the same, telling his audience his particular feelings of the moment through harmony and melody. Unfortunately, if you are not a musician, or if you are, you need to have reached a certain level, where the instrument and you are one, and becomes an extension of your brain. You don't think about it, it comes out of you as a second nature. Just like words. When we speak, we don't need to always think about what we want to say. Sometimes we do look for specific words, but most of the time, the words flow is seamless. For Gary Moore and virtuosi Musicians, the same can be said about their music.
Just that he was a very good singer, but the greatest blues guitarist, and possibly the greatest guitarist in any genre, of all time. That's the difference.
At one point during this performance one of the strings on Gary's guitar goes out of tune and Gary retunes it without skipping a beat. The man was a pro. Gary was so soulful and skilled as a guitar player and could sing his heart out. He took the mid to late 1960s Bluesbreakers style of blues playing and brought it into the future with his hard style of Blues that sounded modern but still with the soul of classic Blues. Gary is in my book one of the greatest Blues guitarists and Blues vocalists of all time. He died far too young and too soon. RIP Gary.
I don’t care how many times I’ve heard this tune from Gary, and to this day it still rips my heart out! Gary is without a doubt a genius, a true gift to us from God. There will never be another. We all miss him so much. It’s painful and sad.
I'm a mere 35 years in, studio sound engineer and still a student.... yes, this man was an absolute master of the art..... I can mimick, but not recreate. Can I play the solo? Yes. Does it feel right? No. Only Gary does Gary. My first ever live gig was Gary Moore, After The War, I THINK it was 1986, but everything online says 1987... Anyway, no turning back after that.... Then he went Blues and..... well, that was the rest of my life... I love other bands but Gary is basically the reason I play guitar and mess about with sound engineering... He may be gone, but as far as I am concerned - 2 seconds of a solo and I am back in 1996.....
You had Gary and then everyone else who wished they could play like Gary....for me Gary was the greatest blues rock player to ever strap on the instrument...he was just in another league...and the fact that you had a myriad of players that we're influenced by him is just a testament to his great playing...we all sure miss your genius Gary..🎸🎸🎸
guys who listens to it in 2023? this piece is fantastic, the guitar solo is something wonderful. I never get tired of listening to it. great gary moore.
2024- loving this song that sings to me each time I hear it. Still got the Blues is a soulful song with Gary’s guitar solo that crys out to me! What a masterpiece. Luv u from Turkey - RIP❤Monsieur Gary Moore🌹🌹🌹
As a guitarist the ultimate quest for me personally is to be able to express myself like this ! The perfect bends , the vibrato , the tone , in the pocket timing , THE FEEL. To be in complete and utter control of the instrument at all times and being able to play whatever you want , those bends are NOT easy to hit right , takes a lot of time patience and control. What a player man holy smokes !! I can listen to this man play all day long !
I was very fortunate to watch this concert, while sitting just a few feet away from him in front of the stage. I've witnessed the greatest guitar player ever lived that night. One of my finest moments.
An emotional song that guitar certainly wept. Gary's talent goes beyond measure he really gave it, taken away from us too early. Rest in peace Gary. And when the rain drops we will know your playing the blues above.
I just said this guy is perhaps the best lyrical guitarist of all time, and I’ll say it again… sorry if you disagree. I keep many guitar heroes in my pocket, and this damn man is the one I come back to But I’m just me leaving a comment. Not trying to wake some snakes. Best to you brother.
Miss this guy so so very much. This makes me feel so sad, yet so happy Gary was born to play the blues in a way that touched me way deep down inside my heart and chilled me down to my bones. Miss you Gary, RIP brother 💙
Greater song and solos writer than guitar player, which is more important to be. There are at least hundreds better guitar players but they can't make a good song.
Just thought I had heard the best till I heard Gary. He is the best guitarist I have EVER heard . His vocals are also superb. RIP Mr. Moore . We will listen to your music till the end.
Seen Gary a couple of times in Dublin and he is/was without doubt the best guitarist I’ve ever seen or heard. He could make that guitar sing such a sweet sound. I’m sure others will disagree but that’s my opinion. God rest you Gary. Say hi to Phillo for me. 🤘
What can we say about this excellent guitarist who left us so soon? It inspired many others and several generations!! His talent is eternal..... this performance was epic!! R.I.P. Gary
Since I discovered Gary Moore jeez I m so in love with him RIP SWERTIE !!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️such a talent he was phenomenal on the guitar his voice so vetsetal and seductive just a great love him never get tired of listening 2 him🎹🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🌠♥️😘🎵🎵🎵🎵🕰😎🌬🌬🌬🌬🌬🌬
The sweat in his face, the pain of many lost loves reflected in one in particular, the struggle between himself & spirit, with the guitar crying & yelling. Complete freedom, life on its terms whatever they may be
The hymn for everyone who suffers from heart bleeding. No matter what, in every tone there is every single pain of each and every lost or desparate lover, the solo buries you. Case closed! Oh and btw: of course a masterpiece!!
