After 39 years of his first and debut appearance on TV, Gary Numan returns to the Live episode of The Old Grey Whistle Test in 2018 playing the same song "Are 'Friends' Electric?" which made him famous as his first No.1 hit.
From the pristine, uniformed utopia of the late 70's to the apocalyptic zombie of 2018, how perception of the future has changed! Still a great song & a great version.
This performance, when played back to back with the original OGWT version, is the very definition of progress in electronic rock music. The whole history of the genre ready to consume in a 10 minute package. Brilliant!
There ‘s a man outside… in a long coat, grey hat 🎩 smoking a cigarette… wow Gary Numan is absolutely brilliant!!! I have been a fan since I heard ‘Me I Disconnect from You’ ‘Down In The Park’ the entire Replicas album just blew me away!! 1979 I was 12 yrs old, I have been a fan for over 40 yrs.. So what does that tell you then. If the original sound blows this away then this guy is a genius as that sound was 40 years ago light years ahead of its time.. Get Gary in the hall of fame hes a pioneer and a legend
Oh wow he's so so good I love 😍 his style of music he's doing now well done Gary and I ur daughter wot a beautiful name she got and a beautiful name love 😍 u Gary 👌👏👏👏
I thought The Old Grey Whistle Test was active from 1971 to 1989 turns out it is still sometimes active for old treasured moments Show for interviewing musicians and bands show off their music Gary Numan looks like an escaped convict from the mental asylum his outfit. Who thought this genius with Asperges could create futuristic music then and now he is 63 years old.
And the themes of the songs predicted the future not just the sounds of the Synths. Are Friends Electric? Mines Broken down and I’ve got no one to love. Read into that what you like. But I know exactly what he’s singing about.
great live performance of this classic song.ps saw Tubeway army perform this at the Club Lafayette Wolverhampton back in the late 70's how the years "great music lives has lived and will live " KWB 1988
The original is always best, but its weird to see the Macs connected to the keyboards and all the digital stuff. You listen to the original and you really know he was wayyy ahead of his time in '79. Thanks for posting this!
It certainly is odd to see Macs connected to Controller Keyboards. I think the original sounds better tbh, what is that weird synth sound in the Middle 8 at 1:25, it sounds nothing like the original which is a kind of Organ sound layered with a Saw Sound from the Verse. Are they deliberately trying to sound different or is that they can't be bothered to program anything to sound like the original, I've often wondered ?
BBC sound engineers use a lot of compression on live recordings, then, when videos get uploaded to RU-vid, it goes through further compression (this "dilutes" certain bass frequencies). There's a strong possibility that the synths were actually a lot more forceful in the studio ; )
@@therunawaykid6523 True, amazing how it’s almost like Karaoke where their singing in front of the song rather than with it. Apparently Numan likes the arrangement.
@@AlainHubert l'm a musician myself...l know...Gary even said himself in a interview,,the analogue v digital debate is ridiculous..and that he couldn't care less as long as the sound is good. So the chance of Gary taking polymoogs on shows is 0 %. I totally agree with him.
