It's up there with Quadrophenia Withnail and i Get Carter Lock Stock Scum Kes NONE of those Movies had SHIT American remakes either Which is a Good Thing😀😀😀
Nil by Mouth is exactly what it's like to live with a violent alcoholic. When I watched it, I seemed to hear Gary Oldman's voice saying, "It's okay. I lived through it, too." I will always be grateful to him for this healing movie.
Nil By Mouth 'is' a classic and should be respected as a classic. Its not a nice film, its not pleasant, its not glamorized etc etc. But what it is, is down to earth, bloody good, honest acting that is 2nd to none. I mean, Kathy Burke was simply devine she really was. The scene where she dances in with her mum in the kitchen? mannnnnnnnnnnnnnn that was soooo touching. Watching this clip here? I must admit I did'nt know that Gary was the director so hats off to the fella for making such a brilliant film. Its just a shame we dont get more of this kind of film with this level of 'acting'!!!
Hiya's. Yes Mo plays a great part (much better than in E.Enders). As for the War Zone? Hmmmmmmmm, I'll have to take a look at that as I have'nt seen it yet! Thanks 350 and Inge. Tc now both of you.
Growing up in London in the 70's and 80's, this movie has every person I have ever come across. One of my favorites but its more like a bloody documentary! So on the money and so good yet so sad. Someone in this thread says London isn't like this anymore but we all feel the scars from that time. God bless Gary and his genius for getting his story out there. Its not just for him but us too that lived through those times.
From Sid Vicious to Nil By Mouth hes given me a lot of pleasure in my life. Artists are givers. They give us shit that cant be taken away. Life can be so shit, that any little pleasure you get isnt little, its massive, it means something, something real, something inside. Ive never met him, dont know the guy, he owes me nothin but he's brought sunshine into my life. I owe him. Its a debt that cant be repaid. For many reasons. One, is the pleasure given is incalculble, cant be measure, invaluable
I couldn't agree more! Actors are givers especially Gary Oldman. We owe him a lot for all the pleasure while watching him portray every character so genuinely. Like he said in this clip he has played every emotion there is and i say he did so with great respect and responsibility to the way the character should feel and behave whether fictional or real. Its like he really knows what it feels like to be all the ppl he played throughout his career; the good guys and the bad guys although i hate categorizing it in this shallow way i know there is a lot more to each one of his roles . Thank you for your comment it was genuine and a million thanks to the great Gary Oldman for being a respectful artist and a very honest man.
A south Londoner telling a proper south London story.very close to home and a wonderful portrayal of a working class family suffering from the effects in alcoholism and drugs.work hard and play hard to the very limits and a fantastic debut by oldman
Its a fantastic, realistic ,scary but absolutely so well acted and directed. Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke should have got academy awards or similar for their performances in Nil by Mouth. One of my favourites of all time...
Fantastic film. I didn't realize Gary Oldman had written and directed it. I hope he still realizes how much the film means to people who have experienced similar people and the environment portrayed, it feels a release that someone has managed to capture those circumstances and emotions that most media and people would rather pretend do not exist or aren't important. Thank you Gary Oldman for telling many people's story.
All my respect has just gone up another million or so levels, dude is pure genuis... and also this is the only film where he works with his real life sister
Hi Garry ,,,,this documentary film is on the ball, you got me from the very beginning,,,I cry each and every time Cathy dances with her nan, felt that emotion personally, they all were amazing each and every one of them in the film, there will never ever be a film in this world that will ever top this one ,it touches my heart and soul so thank you for nil by mouth, and by the way you are a very handsome man,,,, love Julie from the potteries in Staffordshire England ❤️👍🥰♥️👍
This was Oldman's best film, hands-down... and he's not even in it. Not even a cameo. Now I know he finally got the long-deserved Oscar for THE DARKEST HOUR. He also won a lot of other things for it, including the BAFTA. He already had won the BAFTA for his screenplay for NIL BY MOUTH. He is a highly acclaimed actor, yet still criminally underrated. He deserves to be one of Hollywood's leading men. I think NIL BY MOUTH is even more criminally underrated. I mean, it won BAFTA's for Best Screenplay and Best Film. But it did bomb at the box-office. Everyone should see that film. A look at what life in the South London ghetto is like. I really wish he would write and direct some more films. He's proven himself a force to be reckon with... on both sides of the camera.
31 right now and see this when I was 20 didn't really appreciate it watched it last night and understand it and seen it in real life what acting and what a film
I've known for a while that Oldman is a fairly intelligent and interesting fellow, and interviews like this (and the film itself) prove he has an understanding and a willingness to lay bare truths that some may find uncomfortable, but this is a necessary quality for today.
you gary oldman are one of the best actors on earth i love nil by mouth its a master peice and i love any film with you in it you are a legend and truly brilliant man
Even after all his years of acting and doing various accents you can still hear traces of his saath Landan accent. Fantastic film, very haunting, and uncomfortable viewing for its absolutely realistic portrayal.
He's so right on everything he said !!! He's so special, so sencear and true... always speak, write and act from his heart !!! God bless him... and many thanks to you for uploading that great interview !!!
One of the greatest actors.... ever... Who can claim so many different identies as him... You believe his performances, you believe in the characters he creates so you are no longer watching Gary Oldman, but the character. Few can really claim that.
Difficult movie, it made me feel so bad for the women that were powerless to Ray. But thats the point of it, its a movie I will never forget and everyone should see it.
This film is so realistic it's honestly terrifying. Precisely why most 'horror' these days I generally fall asleep to. You might as well be watching a play or someone playing a video game.
Nil by Mouth is so amazing because it doesn't seem like a movie to me. It plays out like a documentary about addiction, it's like watching real life. More movies need to be made like this because it could inspire people in all forms of art to help educate addicts and most importantly let addicts know they are not alone.
And your comment Maam/ Sir is definitely the most brave and respectful ever written. I don't know you but i am really proud i came across your comment .
Herbert yeah I totally agree with you...remember waiting round phone boxes and having to keep calling back loads of times to score...very real in nil by mouth...drug free for 23 yrs now🙏
@@stevemurphy6780 by far the hardest part of my recovery was the return of my conscience , I'm sure that is where many people relapse, the reward for sticking was the return of my soul, the most precious thing we own and the only thing we are taking with us. Thanks for your comment. much respect!!
I loved Nil By Mouth. It's real and that's what I want to see up on the screen, my life and others' lives reflected before me. Not another billion dollar budget, 2 hour advertising promo for the next marketable plastic toy.
So spot on Gary, thanks for the whole of this,it's my life story, a functional addict. It is a horrible thing to bring up a young family being an addict while hating on yourself every day ,seeking an out from life's way it treats people who wonder what is going on in your life when you can't get a job and the job centre is to cover over a facade that there is job's in the first place, I must have done about half a million on kit no problem, makes you feel sick.
For me the measure of an actor is whether their personality, demeanor and characteristics remain contiguous across varying roles. After observing Mr. Oldman here speak and move as himself, I realised that no role I've ever seen him perform in reflects in any way the traits of the man himself. Likewise it naturally follows then that his film 'Nil By Mouth' driven by the purity of his honest desire to see a certain story expressed would thus eventuate as a social document, accurately representing lives that few survive and even less a number well equipped to explain succinctly. It's value as a piece of cinema is easily determined through the comments of others who've connected with its content on an emotional level because they can relate to what it portrays through their lived experience also. In my opinion Nil By Mouth is one of the most valuable pieces of socially documenting, Anglo based historic 'fiction' created, because its story is propelled by an honesty as complete as the inescapable brutality of the maze-like circumstances which spawned it, whilst offering through that bleak representation of a final, falling tear drop, its own existence as a film standing representative as a beacon of hope that throughout all within there is a chance to reach a point of triumph.
"...it's absolutely sod all to do with life. It's just movies imitating movies, imitating movies, imitating movies, imitating movies." Unfortunately that statement sums up the movie industry for the past two decades, if not longer. (There has been a small independent niche of quality work, may it continue.)
Here's the scoop--true story: although people thought so, this film is NOT autobiographical. Oldman did grow up in the South London ghetto where the film was shot (on location), but his family was not like this--at all. But there are families that are. MANY. Where this film does take place... and he wanted to address that in a movie. Hey, when IS he going to write and direct another movie again? Come on, Gar--people are craving it.
Watching this movie was almost traumatic for me. I lived in the UK and knew people like the filth in the movie, I remembered how bleak it was, and I'd been in the USA for a few years when the movie came out. It reminded me of why I detested England so much.
