Gas pump shut off early? SOLVED! Entire evap system explained & troubleshoot on 2005 Chevy Suburban

Part 1 of 4 videos on fixing the gas pump shut off early problem. Likely there is a problem with the "evap" system which commonly fails on Chevy Tahoe and Suburban from 1997-2006. Check engine lights and issues putting gas into the tank where the pump clicks and won't allow any more gas are common symptoms of an evap system issue. My vehicle is a 2005 Chevy Suburban LTZ, 5.3L Flex fuel, 2WD.

Thanks for the video! I replaced the canister first, clogging continued. Replaced the Canister switch, clogging continued! Thanks to your great description of the system, I was able to unclog the vent line from the tank. The vent line is the long one with the white connectors that is connected to the white fitting on top of the tank. I did not drop the fuel tank. I just disconnected the connector from the charcoal cannister, inserted a smaller hose attached to my shop vacuum and started sucking the charcoal bits ( about a cup of charcoal). Used my leaf blower to blow air into the tank thru the fuel filler as suggested by another viewer. Took me about 2 hours to remove the charcoal and clear the vent.

Had the same problem where I couldn't fuel my Yukon. Started by disconnected the EVAP canister and all the little carbon pellets fell out. So, I dropped the tank, cleared all the lines w compressed air and replaced the canister and canister vent solenoid. With all that done I can now fill up the Yukon perfectly. No more shut off issues.

If you live on dirt roads or very dusty environment go with the vent solenoid relocation option. Otherwise you’ll just keep replacing it. Other option is to wrap in with extra filter material and zip tie it around it. Then just replace that filter every so often.

I don't know everything! BUT the anti-siphon valve where the filler neck meets the tank is spring loaded and was preventing me from filling up my tank at full force. When I dropped the tank to replace the fuel pump at 160,000 miles I tapped the anti-siphon spring and plastic holder into the tank and retrieved it from the fuel pump hole. I was SO happy when I returned to the filling station and could then fill my tank with the nozzle at full blast. Before this I had to hold the damn nozzle barely open to prevent it from shutting off automatically as the filler neck backed up with fuel. I hope this helps someone. Send me a digital thank you if it does, it would make my day.

@MW-sl9lv
@MW-sl9lv Год назад
I was contemplating the same thing, that there was a similar device in the filler neck area that could be causing this issue. Maybe They (GM) designed that spring a little too strong. I have a 2011 Cadillac Escalade with the same problem. That makes more sense, but I won’t rule out replacing the evap system components as well. Great insight all around.
@qwerty6464
@qwerty6464 Год назад
@@MW-sl9lv I think the spring is probably ok - my observation is the plastic part the spring pushed on didn't always slide smoothly, and appeared to tilt and bind instead. If it binds when fuel hits it from the top instead of compressing the spring and flowing into the tank, that would surely slow down the flow of fuel.
@qwerty6464
@qwerty6464 Год назад
@@brandonhines1613 Just knock out that anti-siphon valve after dropping the tank (when empty of fuel). Then retrieve the part and spring from the fuel pump hole. I suppose a person could leave them in there as they are way too large for the fuel pump to attempt to pick up. They'd just be permanent residents of the tank lol.

I just fixe this on my daughter's corolla. It was a spider's nest in the vent output hose from the canister. It's open to atmosphere and just hangs below the canister. I dug the nest out and now it fills with no problems. Check this hose first before ripping into your system. This is a common cause.

If you've had carbon into the evap lines...you have to completely blow all lines out before replacing the components. Carbon bits get stuck in the lines particularly above the tank. Works best if dropping tank , remove lines and tap while blowing both directions

I crawled under to pull the canister and check for carbon pellets and I noticed that the smaller vent line that goes up by the gas cap area, where it comes down to the tank and makes that 90 degree curve, the line looks kinked there. I tried straightening it out, but its a no go. Is that line under any kind of pressure? could I possibly cut the kink out and splice in some fuel line hose to avoid buying that whole vent hose set up that runs across the top of the tank? Codes coming up? If you suddenly have codes popping up, ask yourself this. "Has my battery gone completely dead recently or did I change the battery myself" If yes, drive your car through the manufacturer specific, driving recycling procedure to re-boot your computer. A lot of things can be fixed by just idling from a cold start for a few minutes while turning on every electricity item in the car. AC, rear defroster, radio, lights, etc.

If your going to go through the effort of lowering the fuel tank to remove the line assembly off the top you might as well use hot soapy water to fill the lines let them soak and then blow it out with an air compressor. I've used simple Green and hot water in a trash can overnight. And had great results. My other suggestion would be stopped buying all these replacement parts and just replace the internal filters. The solenoid valve has a pop top. Replacement filter source any high-density foam cut to fit. The charcoal canister has a pop top. Dispose of the fuel soaked charcoal. Go to the pet store and buy the pre-bagged charcoal filters. Fill the canister with the charcoal. Use a little RTV sealant to ensure that you don't have an air leak when you place the lid back on top. Do you not top off your tank ever again. Problem solved.

One of the frustrating things that professionals have to deal with is cars that have already had multiple components replaced, yet the issue persists. Aftermarket components are usually inferior and sometimes bad, right out of the box! So a professional workflow takes a little bit more effort to verify which part is bad. If you choose to spend money up front and shoot the parts cannon, remember to hang on to and label your old parts so a pro can retrace the steps.
@shopwarrior1835
@shopwarrior1835 3 года назад
Good advice! Everyone take note. Also, I agree on the cheap parts. Having tried the cheap parts over the years, I no longer fool with them. I try to buy the best OEM parts I can, in this case AC Delco.

I have had this problem for months. I replaced the carbon canister first; didn’t fix the problem. Replaced the fuel tank pressure sensor mounted into the top of the gas tank, but that didn’t fix the problem. Then I replaced the solenoid with the 2 hoses (1 going to charcoal canister and the other hose which is secured to the fill tube by zip ties). Still didn’t fix the problem. Please advise on any suggestions.

You'll need to drop the gas tank to remove the evap lines from the top of the tank and shake out all of the little charcoal pellets. I just finished the job and it worked immediately.

crazy idea, but could you cut the big line near the tank, tee in with a vent hose, run the vent hose up to the filler neck, and tee into your vent hose there? of course that would be bypassing the evap system completely and would not be 100% legal, but theoretically would it work? also, you could tap a new fitting into the top of the tank and tee it into the vent line near the filler neck, right?

Nope, you will get an EVAP GROSS LEAK code. It performs an EVAP test once in a while, but closing the VENT valve, opening the PURGE valve (vacuum), then closing the PRUGE valve and measuring the pressure over time. With a new vent, it will fail the test. P0455 CODE or similar.

Question how about when vacuum is too strong in the evap system but I change everything already. And I’m getting the code of P0446

My 07 tahoe is having the same problems. I have already replaced all 3 parts and I'm still having the same problems. Honestly it's gotten worse
