I still have my turboduo from a child and many cds. I beat gate of thunder as a kid a few times with zero deaths and felt like a God at the time. This game is always my childhood favorite. Cheers.
I love all the tricks they used in this game to make it look like the Duo can pull off multi-plane parallax scrolling. They really knew how to get the most out of the hardware.
I bet they did the same kinds of things Sega and their 3rd parties did with Genesis games. What I mean is, the Genesis lacks hardware scaling (which was such a stupid decision) yet there are many games on the console that do in fact feature all kinds of effects that flat shouldn't be possible. Like scaling, rotation, sprite warping, and sprite shrinking. The way developers did this was through software and with it Mode 7 was not only achievable they would do it without the hint of any slowdown. If you want to see crazy feats on a 16-bit console I encourage you to look up- 1. Panorama Cotton (MD) 2. Red Zone (Gen) 3. Kawasaki Super Bike (Gen) 4. Mortal Kombat Arcade *Fan Remake (Gen) 5. Star Fox Fan Remake (Gen) 6. Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition *Fan Remake (Gen) The first 3 are all games that had official commercial releases. The last 3 are fan remakes that push the Genesis harder than any development team ever did when it was current. Every last game I listed can be played on bone stock hardware and none of these games feature specialized chips or were made beyond the consoles spec.
Alongside Lords of Thunder, Gate of Thunder is the "other" first-pick, amazing yet horribly neglected, Duo shooter with super-smooth, fast play and an impossibly good metal soundtrack. And it's on the Wii Virtual Console, so if you don't have a Duo, go spend the $8 on your Wii or Wii U and buy it already. You can thank me later.
And here thought I was going to have to result to emulation. Hope I enjoy it as I'm not too fond of this type of genre. Been craving for some new PC Engine games.
Airsh Bornely It definitely had some awesome shooters, best of the 16-bit generation. If shooters arent you forte but you want an easier, really good game, you should try Air Zonk and Blazing Lazers. Both are great games even for people that don't really like shmups, and they're both really accessible in their play
NintendoComplete I may get crap for this, but I actually didn't care for this game. For one, I suck at it. I can't get past the first stage. Part of my problem is that often I get confused where my ship is and I end up crashing into things. I know it's easy to tell where your ship is, but when you are trying not to get killed, it's hard to pay attention sometimes. I'll try it again in the future. I did like Lords of Thunder.
I couldn't play the game for shit, but I LOVED it because of the soundtrack. I even borrowed it from my friend just to listen to the tracks (before ripping CDs was a thing). He said "but you don't have a TG16" and I replied "you let me worry about that" and just spent the whole weekend listening to it in my Sony Discman. Almost makes me cry.
Playing this game on a modded TurboDuo (couldn't use NTSC video signal in my country so my dad converted it to PAL/SECAM) in my parent's basement when I was 11 along with Ys is still one of my fondest childhood memories. I got to the end boss once but didn't beat it. Thanks for giving me closure !
Krikzz is working on an upgraded everdrive for the pc engine that would allow CD games to run on stock pc engine devices without the cd add-on. That means cd games on the GT/turbo express. What a time to be alive.
I was FINALLY able to play this its BEAUTIFUL 😭 my favorite shooter on the Turbografx CD next to Lords Of Thunder now on the Turbografx itself that goes to Soldier Blade that game is superb
Aaaah this version of the game came packed in with the TurboDuo. I really wish I would have known about that absolutely insane deal TTi was running on the TurboDuo. I would have gotten it... For $299.99 you got the TurboDuo, controllers, av cables, Y's Books I+II, Bonk's Adventure, Bonks's Revenge, Gate of Thunder, and Bomberman as a secret hidden bonus game. Finally, it also came packaged with either Dungeon Explorer, Ninja Spirit, or Final Lap Twin. That's a total of 7 great games for 300 bucks. Y's Books I+II is actually two separate games in one.
It's a bit weird that you used the Japanese Super System Card (syscard3, the most used) since when it does the falling amination it turns into the US Super System Card One (syscard3u).
Totally agree. Thunderforce 4 still tops this imo. Even tho this game is super cool n impressive but it's all with an unfair technology comparison, by that i mean if Technosoft wud av been able to go nuts using the Mega CD & Megadrive together on a Thunderforce game then my mind boggles at the outcome! Iv no probs with people preferring this game tho.
Kinda frustrated, I can't find roms for PC-Engine/Turbo CD games anywhere. Or japanese exclusive games anywhere. Would like to play this if anyone can point me in a direction I'd appreciate it.
I really wish the Wii VC port of this hadn't had the sound botched the way it was. It's a fantastic game, but just really, really hard to enjoy on the Wii (or Wii U) because of the jacked up sound.
