Episode 48
Gauntlet may seem like one of the most impossible games for the NES, but it can be beaten! There are 100 rooms to explore, and a vicious three headed hydra to slay! If you enjoy games like the Legend of Zelda, you owe it to yourself to check out Gauntlet!
One of the great things about Gauntlet is that it allows two player cooperative play! The game may be tough, but you don't have to tackle it alone.
Before it was on the NES, Gauntlet was a very successful arcade game! It was created by Ed Logg, who had a hand in making some of the most famous arcade games of all time, including Centipede, Super Breakout, and Asteroids!
So how did Gauntlet become such a big hit for Atari? How was it changed for the home console release, and what's going on with the weird black cartridge from Tengen that it sometimes appears on? In today's episode we'll learn all of that, then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* Strategies for completing ALL 100 ROOMS! A few of them should be avoided, but we'll definitely check out all 100!
* The best way to navigate through the gauntlet! Don't miss anything important!
* How to collect TONS OF TREASURE and power up early!
* Which character is the best, and why?
* Detailed MAPS for EVERY ROOM with labeled exits!
* Which WEAPONS AND ITEMS are good, and which should be avoided!
* SHORTCUTS to skip through to the later levels!
* Where to find EVERY CLUE, and what to do if you miss any!
* The FASTEST way to get ALL FIVE UPGRADES!
* How to avoid the PASSWORD BUG - Make sure you'll be able to continue and save!
* Understanding how to LEVEL UP your hero!
* Where to find TONS of KEYS and BOMB POTIONS! Always have a full supply!
* The best route through VOLCANA - Finally find the Vault of Morak!
* How to defeat the dreaded three headed hydra, guardian of the Sacred Orb... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

Thanks for making this. Years ago, before I owned an NES myself, I could only play a couple times each year when visiting my aunt's house. My aunt had an adopted teenage son who was older than me, and sort of my step-cousin. He was one of those kids that hung around outside with his friends much more than inside, but he did have an NES in the basement. There were only like three games--Adventure Island, Double Dragon, and Gauntlet. I remember plugging this one in and hearing the music, and thinking how great it sounded with its harpsichord-like tones and bells. I loved Questor because he moved the fastest. I never got very far, but when I think of this game I can still smell the carpet in my aunt's basement and the smell of Thanksgiving dinner as it cooked slowly over the hours and I played until I was called upstairs for food. Then I'd eat, then take my plate back to the basement and play some more!

If you pause the game, it also removes a shot from the screen. This comes in handy if a stray shot is headed towards a bomb or food item. The super shot destroys doors, treasure, and items so be very careful when shooting and use the pause trick in case you mess up.
