I always thought Rakim meant. This album is called Follow the Leader, the theme is following the leader because he was the first in hop hop to rhyme this way to lead hip hop into a new era and he's showing it on the song which is called Follow the Leader

Their catalog still makes both Eric B and Rakim millions per year. Not bad for under 10 years of work as a group. Too bad that it had to end but if I'm not mistaken, Eric was smart to not sign, a la Ice Cube and NWA.

When he says "rent - a - rapper", I believe he's talking about rappers who were more successful guest rapping on someone else's song. And things that are "minute made" usually are pre-cooked, that you just heat up in the microwave. So in this instance, when he says "your rhymes are minute made" it could be that he's implying his rival's lyrics are written by someone else. "You're just a rapper for hire, other people write your rhymes".

This song is about EPMD and BIG DADDY KANE. RAKIM and EPMD are both from Long Island RAKIM felt EPMD were copying him and KANE was the other 5% NATION rapper at the time. That’s why the song is Follow the leader because he felt that they were following him. The “R” being a one letter word is because Phonetically “R” sounds out as “Are” That’s why he said “My name is RAKIM ALLAH..and RA stands for Ra..flip it around..it still comes out AR/Are..” RAKIM had so many hidden layers in his lyrics because of the 5% lessons he dropped in his songs. Absolutely 100% my favorite rapper of all time.

The only disappointing thing about this fire track is the film clip. When I first heard this in 88, all I visualized was outer space, then when I saw the film clip I was like “what the fuck is this mafioso shit”
