I have a neighbor with blue grass here in St Louis and he cuts it with a reel mower and cut it below 1 inch and it get very hot and humid here but his lawn always look great. He works for a golf course and takes care of the greens so he knows how to take care of it.

Golf course superintendents are more scientist than anything. I have a putting green in my backyard and without the help of a local superintendent I wouldn't have a single blade of bentgrass. Maintaining grass cut at 1/8th of an inch is seriously difficult. I have 1,000 square feet, the superintendents have acres. It's impressive.

I live in Colorado and bluegrass is the primary turf here. Definitely needs a lot of water in the dog days of summer. I keep it short in spring and fall, middle of summer 3”.

For years I targeted using KBG. I love it. BUT once I tuned into Pete a few years back, I tried his TTTF and never saw a grass germinate like this ever before. I love both grass types. I love the super dark KBG and the super thick, more heat resistant TTTF. That’s why Pete’s TTTF/KBG mix was and is perfect for my yard.

I have a bentgrass putting green in my backyard in Maryland, similar climate to NC. 1,000 square feet. It's a 007/777 blend if Pete sees this. I'd love to see it too. The maintenance on a bentgrass green mowed at .145" like mine is massive. .1lbs of liquid N and K every week plus monthly granular nutrition, daily mowing, rolling, a specific fungicide program, pest control like mad, topdressing every two weeks, and basic cultural practices. The area must be perfectly smooth also, or it will not work. I would love to see him give it a try, it would be a great series. It took me two years to actually putt on my putting green but it's amazing to have now. I actually got in touch with a local golf course superintendent near me who has been a huge benefit. It's tough.

Great video Pete! I have Kentucky Blue Grass in Philadelphia. It is a beautiful lawn. I water the heck out of it in the summer when temps start to go above 90. Because of the constant watering during that time I also have to battle fungus. It is a lot of work but it’s the best looking lawn on the block.

HEY PETE! I think I finally got my dirt right. I've been watching your videos and I put in some work. I bought some Blue Heat, and man oh, man... my neighbor is MAD at me. I now have the best lawn on the block. The Blue Heat, to use my buddy's words is like a really nice shag carpet. My niece came over and said, "now that's the kind of lawn you just want to take your shoes off, walk around a bit and then lie down and look at the clouds on.". BEAUTIFUL!! I can't say enough about GCI Turf, the products, and the seed.

Bluegrass is the best! If this Blue Heat holds up to the heat, it can be a game changer. No more six months of Bermuda looking like crap, in Georgia, and you don't have to overseed Bluegrass, like you do Fescue. It's great to walk on and play on. It's best to cut it longer though. 1" is far too short. 3" to 3-1/2" is probably much better.
@josecito976

I can get away with 1.5 in cooler weather, nothing less than 2 in when things heat up here in central Mass. That and I find from my experience the shorter the cut the more water it needs to stave off needling/heat stress. Maybe a shorter cut provides less shade to prevent water evaporation from soil?? Pete’s 100% right, KBG is a water hog (even in cooler climates) and I think your rate limiting step to grow a thick KBG is going to be access to sufficient irrigation

Your KBG Blue Heat is the best KBG I've grown, and I've tried FIVE gosh darn KBG blends and monostands over five years. I struggled to get a thick stand of KBG surrounding my bentgrass putting green. I seeded three weeks ago and I already have coverage. I used a Lesco greens grade starter and it popped quickly. Great, great product.

This year im mowing my Midnight, Blue Note & Bewitched combination i grew last year at 2.25" my blend grows well in shade and sun. It cost me 250 for grass seed but it will be worth it this year. I apply 1 pound per 1000 and only use Milorganite and I only hafta spot treat broadleaf weeds. 4 years ago it was a crappy weedy lawn with dandelions galore. Last year I tried Ironite granular for the first time I will be applying more this season along with that black liquid seaweed or whatever LCN and Ryan Knorr sells

Sachi WI ...Sounds like you purchased it at the Seed Superstore, I did the same, the transformation of my lawn has been amazing! KBG loves nitrogen though, it needs it like it’s hooked on Meth. Don’t forget the Potassium, it helps a lot, especially a needy grass like KBG.
@josecito976
@josecito976 4 года назад
Milorganite serves its purpose but you’ll find over time you’re going to have to supplement with a more balanced fertilizer A KBG lawn is as nice a lawn as they come when healthy and established but from my experience it needs three things to really thrive: water, water and water Also, spoon feed throughout the season with a balanced fert, keep weeds down, mow regularly, always use a sharp blade, mulch clippings and treat pests (grubs). You can’t go wrong with soil amendments, I guess

Pete the way your feeding it this year I hope your prepared to mow every or every other day. Also I've found that new bluegrass looks best at 2in or less and it less has problems like fungus, laying over problems etc. If you have really old bluegrass lawn it wants to be mowed at 3in cause it grows up fast and has less lateral growth and more vertical. Tip: if you want to make bluegrass pop give it heavy app of iron.

But i don't want to keep up with the watering so I think Ill stick to TTTF. I don't think the variety benefit outweighs dormant kbg that might make the whole lawn look sickly.

I have a couple areas (approx. 2' x 7' patches) where I have compact soil that browns some when the temps get in the 90's. I think I need to kill off those areas, put new topsoil in, then reseed. When should I do the renovation part? Let the new seeded areas sit over the winter keeping in mind I do put down pre-emergent in the spring or reseed in August with my overseeding?

Pete, Had a question. Do you have any thoughts or knowledge on Titan RX/Titan Ultra/Titan Ltd turf type tall fescue? Seems like it produces rhizomes (self repairing like Kentucky Blue grass), but has a darker green color and a MUCH deeper root system. From the 2012-2016 NTEP results I reviewed, it seems to have good Sun and Shade tolerance, and excellent heat/drought/cold tolerance. Since I know you have your own GCI TTTF seed mainly with Falcon IV cultivars, I wanted to know why you dont also use Titan RX/Ultra/Ltd in your blend? Lastly, it seems there is also a grass seed blend called TLC Blend turf type tall fescue, with some big name Cultivars in it, such as Titan Rx, Titan Ultra, Titan Ltd, Hudson, Rendition Rx, Rendition, and Covenant II. I would be VERY interested if you could to a "Test Plot: of either the Titan RX/Ultra or of the T.L.C. Blend? Your Kentucky Blue Grass looks amazing, but man is it needy (with watering, fertilizer, Ph, brown patch, and bi-annual de-thatching). Just seems like a heat-tolerance TTTF would do better! Let me know your thoughts! (Also, I plan to plant Titan Rx and T.L.C. Blend grass seed in my backyard this year). I would love to do a collab with you and share the results for the benefit of everyone interested in TTTF grasses. (FYI I live in SW Ohio - Transition Zone. Most lawns are Kentucky Blue Grass but I'm thinking TTTF might be the winner here!)

Kentucky blue grass does best in Kentucky...

I thinking about this, but I'm in South Florida lol. I seeded a lawn that was bare dirt with rye. It looks great, but rye will die. I wonder if this would have a chance here. July till August it will be 80 min and 90 max. I have some shade, lot's of rain, and irrigation. I don't think this will work, especially bc I would have to seed it now. But I was checking seeded zoysias and they all have a medium green, nothing came even close to the dark green of the rye. Any suggestions?

Might be a dumb question: Are Blue Heat and Cool Blue 2 different seed varieties?

Mannnnnnn the 50 pound bags sell out so quick ya gotta spend more to get the same amount in 25 lb bags. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ the fescue bluegrass blend is wiped out. Thought I’d be clever grabbing the fescue and bluegrass separate and just mixing my own. Saw the price of that. Pumped those brakes really quick.

Hey Pete I'm in zone 4a and looking to overseed this fall. I mainly have bluegrass I'm assuming with fescue. Front yard in sun all day and back mainly in sun with some shaded spots from trees. Any seed recommendations ? I'm new to this. I was told perennial rye in front, and a rye/fescue blend in back, but I have no idea! Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Lordy mercy that .5" KBG looks amazing! Can I incorporate it into my TTTF lawns? No in ground irrigation is my only concern. 🤔

What type of bluegrass would work well in conjunction to bermuda, in a shaded area that only gets about 3 hours of sun?
