How to fix a GE microwave, Keypad Shorted message. Quick fix. Doesn't need a new keypad or circuit board. How to reconnect GE microwave keypad to circuit board, F3 Error Model Number JNM1541SN1SS
I'm a 67 year old woman. My neighbor had this code on her microwave (it was a different GE model). It took us less than 2 minutes to do what Paul said. It is fixed! Thanks for posting this Paul.
bob melcher awesome!!! Lady power!! Im abt to take mine apart and hopefully fix it!! I love fixing!! However, i ended up buying a brandnew / used/ not used, micro for $40! Maybe i wont need it and can sell it!! Lol wish me luck!🙏🏽👌🏼🌈
Thank you! GE microwave "Keypad Shorted" message. It seemed secure when I took it out but after reseating works like new. Saved me a chunk of change and a big hassle!
Brooooo u the mannnn , i was going to buy a new one ,but my wife is cheap and want me to fix everything so for me not to fix crap i rather buy new ones 😂🤷♂️🤣🤣 but ur video was really helpful thanks bro ....✌👍🏻👍🏻💪💪💪😎😎😎
Never should’ve messed with the connections. Just go watch the other video. You can fix the ribbon without touching, removing, messing with, or destroying, any other connections. Skip alllll that and go to the ribbon. Do NOT unnecessarily mess with those and destroy the microwave. Please learn from my mistake. Thanks for taking your time to teach us, Paul! I'm going to try this when my son gets home from school--I'll help him learn a little skill and self-sufficiency along with me. Thanks for a couple of laughs, too, when you almost dropped the keypad and belatedly reminded us to unplug the unit. Nice hands. You're awesome. :) And thanks to the others who left some additional tips in the comments. Great way to start the day!
As a graduate of FRED'S APPLIANCE REPAIR SCHOOL i approve this message, however, I would recommend that anytime anyone work on a microwave oven (or just about anything else with a plug for that matter)that the first thing they do is unplug it and the second thing is that they discharged the capacitor. I understand that the keypad is not necessarily close to the capacitor but what you have there is an appliance that can really ruin your day even if it's unplugged. Discharging a capacitor is done by jumping between the positive and negative terminals. You can do it with a screwdriver.
I have a question for you. My control panel numbers stopped working. Only 30 second number works, all top buttons beep and bottom buttons beep except am/pm. We took the built in out and put in on the sink but we cant find out how to open control panel to look for the ribbon! It is a GE Profile model PEB2060SM1SS October 2008. Can you help me?
Thanks so much! Great, informative video. Took less that 5 minutes to fix and saved me a bundle! As others are noting, I also had a few other loose connections. I was also able to loosen the ribbon clip without taking the others off. Solid work, sir. And ditto on BOOM done!
Got same message...Just did this fix on GE microwave jvm1540sp1ss, 14 yrs old. Works, so far, thank you. Be prepared for greasy gunk in crevices. I found rubbing alcohol on qtip and paper towel helped clean things up (be gentle)
You'd probably have to buy a new keypad. BUT, if you have to do it again, clear the ribbon off with rubbing alcohol on a qtip. The fix will last longer!
Thanks, had the same error code "Keypad Panel Shorted" after I cleaned the outside of the microwave. Followed your video and error message cleared and microwave is working just like before. Saved $150 on new control keypad!!
was wondering, i do have a electronic cleaner, would that be good to use in this? I have a Hotpoint microwave and it said F3 like this but now i see that hotpoint is the value brand of GE, so I will try this next time it happens. But the issue I have is the light flickers, etc, and then go back to this, and PF so i will try this next time. thanks @@paulleininger4823
Thank you SO much! My microwave just started beeping out of nowhere and after a quick search I found your video! You saved me! I followed your super clear instructions and BOOM - FIXED!
I did this and it worked as described, then the fault appeared again about 7 hours later. Perhaps the ribbon connectors need to be cleaned when I try again.
This video is awesome!!!! When my wife told me what was going on, I thought we were going to have to buy a new microwave for sure. Followed this video and it solved the problem. Very easy to follow and do. Thank you so much!!!!!
This is awesome. Thank you so much for making this video . Mine seems to be a slightly different model with the screws located at different places but the concept was the same. I fixed mine in 10-15 minutes, with most of the time spent in cleaning up. Saved time and money! Thank you 🙏
I've done this many times, securing the ribbon as you show, but it never lasts. I've also cleaned the ribbon with alcohol before reinserting. Any other suggestions?
THANK YOU GOOD SIR!! Didn’t work the first two times. Then I read some comments, used the suggestion to clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol and q-tip, and SUCCESS!
Thanks for your clear instructions. You saved me a ton of trouble. I was able to fix this today in only about 45 minutes - and that includes 30 minutes of cleaning all the grease off the grill. The plastic can be very fragile! All the heat/cool cycles makes the plastic really easy to break.
Great video!!! As others have said, saved me a chunk of cash! The first time it didn't work, but cleaning the ribbon with isopropyl alcohol took care of it!
Completed this process once and it didn't work. Tried it a second time, cleaning the ribbon with rubbing alcohol and it worked. However, about five minutes later, the keypad shorted again. Guess Ill be buying a new panel.
My family has the HVM1540LP1CS and my dad was telling me yesterday that the microwave started beeping on its own. He thought his wife had something in the microwave and when he asked her, she said NOPE, so he went to check it out. When he tried to press any of the buttons, they would not work. Pressing CLEAR would do nothing so he unplugged it for about 12hrs. The next morning still was not working, so he was already thinking buying one, but looking online at the new models, the wholes that holds the microwave would probably not be the same, the FRAME definitely was not the same so the old one had to be removed and the new one had to be install. The whole to pass the power cable would probably be different on the new one. There were a couple of things that my dad didn't feel of doing, so I told him lets go online and find a troubleshooting video, that's when I came across your video, and let me tell you, it was perfect. I removed the whole board panel, the cable was tight, but I removed it and cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol. I also removed the board and cleaned it as well. Let it dry for a while, put everything back together and so far it has been working. I'm glad my dad didn't have to spend about $300 for a new microwave that nowadays a LOT of them are lacking a lot of features compare to the older ones. Thanks!
I appreciate you ! 💪🏼 Wife’s been tellin me to buy a new microwave. Didnt want to uninstall and reinstall a new one. You just saved me money, but even more important, time! Again in dj khaled voice, “I APPRECIATE YOU“
Thanks Paul! For my model J KP90S P4SS (It's a combo microwave/oven with the oven under the microwave using a combo keypad) you only need to unscrew (2) Torq screws on the inside face and then the whole keypad lifts out.
Same has been happening to my microwave ever since I started boiling batches of bagels on the range top on Saturday mornings. I believe it's a design fault allowing the steam to condensate on the ribbon cable and drip into the connector causing the errors. At first, I simply unplugged the microwave and waited until the ribbon cable/connector dried naturally. This usually took an hour or two and I was back in business Alternatively, popping the ribbon cable off, wiping it dry and reseating works like a charm but does require a screwdriver and few minutes of effort.
Have this same model, same error/issue, followed your steps, and got it working again! THANK YOU! I also broke some tabs in the process :D I think it'll be time for a new microwave soon though - the one we have is disgusting (oil and grease all over it - I guess the previous owner never cleaned it)

Have the microwave range combo but the premise was the same and worked like a charm! Thanks Paul L....saved us all some head and heartaches. Not to mention an S ton of $$$.
No help.Still beeping. screen goes to: "Express" and engages microwave for 60 seconds and repeats this cycle. Out of nowhere at 7am this morning. Not fun. Thanks anyway.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work for my GE microwave JVM1540SP1SS. I was able to reset the click and it worked for 1 minute only then started showing the same error message “keypad shorted service may be needed…” I repeated to reseat the ribbon few times and even cleaned it with rubbing alcohol with a qtip but still same issues remains…off to order a new part for replacement 😂
This worked for me, previous owner had clearly done this before because my plastic vent piece was already cracked like yours. Heads up to all, that small dollar sized aluminum vent piece that comes off with one screw can be VERY sharp on the sides. Sliced my finger open when I was putting it back on, be careful, wear work gloves!
Oh my goodness!! Been in my new home for 2 years and only kept home warranty for 1 year, I dropped my Home Warranty about 6 months ago and of course, I got this message on my microwave. Just my luck...I was not looking forward to this bill. It also helps that I have the same kind of microwave in this video, SCORE!!! I will try this when I get home. Hope it works!! Thanks so much!!!
Thank you my friend. This message has come up several times. Just an hour ago it would not stop and I did what you prescribed, and it worked... lets see how long it will take. Thank YOU!
Thanks for the instructions. Did as shown and it worked. Unfortunately only for half a day. Did it again, same thing - only lasted a short time. Any more tips how I could make this work permanently? Perhaps wedge some thin plastic film at the back of the contact before putting back into the slot??
It worked! Thanks. I was struggling to get the top panel off and slid it slightly to the left which you mentioned. I think I spent more time cleaning the built up grease than the repair. 😀
I followed your video and did this without unplugging it because it seemed like you didn't (and I couldn't find the cord so I thought there was no way to unplug it, turns out it was in the cabinet above). Then I reached the end of the video where you said unplug it and I realized I'm lucky I didn't get electrocuted!
Thank you so much!! 2am and my 2month old baby starting crying for food, I have no time or energy to warm up water the old school way for formula. It took me less than 20 minutes, had to try two times but it worked!! Thank you!
How do I unplug the microwave first? I don't have an "error" message or anything else going on, but the buttons on my microwave don't work until tapped/pushed MANY times. Maybe a short? Anyone have advice?
Michelle Champlin just unplug and get to the keypad, ck out all the connections, bla bla , put it back enuf to be able to plug back in and see if keypad works,if yes then complete reassembly done. Good luck. First ck if u have power from outlet with other appliance!🤔
Thank you so very much I have the exact same thing going on but I don’t think I can take it apart. Can you recommend someone who could do this for me in Pennsylvania. I unplugged it for the night & the next morning tried again & it said press clock & worked fine that day but started saying key pad shortage again??? Thank you
I didn’t take mine apart yet but it seems to me mine starts acting up if you cook something on the stove, especially something steamy and not run the vent fan at the same time. I’ll usually unplug for several days and it comes back to life but not this last time it didn’t. I can get it to work for one thing (heating, turn on vent fan, etc) and then it goes bonkers after a minute. Anyone else have this problem?
I could not get the panel block out. I used two small needle nose pliers. Unplugged the ribbon re plugged it back in. Works just fine. Thank you for the insight.
Very first time I had the same issue. I fixed it and issue was gone for a few days. It came back with another issue where microwave starts by itself. I used the same fix to resolve those issue a few times. It temporary fixes the issues, but they comes back within 10 mins or less. I think some part may need a replacement. Is there a way to know if the issue is with keyboard or the control board?
Thank you for making the video, so helpful. Do you have to take all the cables out, i tried it without taking all the cable out. It worked for a day, then the error beeping came back on.
Yes I bought a stainless steel demo microwave oven, for just $45. It has been working for about 10 years now. However, when I first turned it on, I found that it was not a demo, but was a dud, since only half of the keyboard buttons worked. But after cleaning the contacts on both the control board and the flex keyboard cable, all was well. Simply re-plugging it in was not enough to fix the problem. It needed a good contact cleaning as well. Anyhow, not all ovens give an error message.
I tried cleaning and reseating 3 x & no luck. I checked continuity of the ribbon cable per the wiring diagram and got nothing. I guess that means I need to replace?
Thanks so much, took me a couple minutes to fix it, and I am the least handiest person in the world! Wonder what it would cost to have a repairman come?
Many thanks. Fantastic fix that was relatively simple to do and worked like a dream. Microwave has been working 2 months now after using your help. Saved me a fortune to repair or replace. Can't thank you enough for sharing this. Appreciate it so much 👍
