@@RadityoPramAdi i love his guitar work on the “keyboard” albums. The solo on red sector is one of my favorites… so melodic, understated yet perfect for the song. Rick beato has a great segment on guitarists and listed him as one of the 6 or 7 innovators of rock guitar.

Countless guitar solos that are not only technically masterful, but incredibly unique, melodic, and full of imagery. Songs like YYZ, Xanadu, Red Barchetta, Limelight, La Villa Strangiato just to name a few off the top of my head. His solos are always so tasteful to the feel of the song, as if it is more of a verse of the song than a guitar solo. He has seamless transitions between lead and rhythm parts through odd time signatures which is even harder in a 3 piece where every mistake and missed note is going to be evident. Alex is every bit as much of a music legend and prodigy of his instrument as Geddy and Neil are, period.

When asked about his influences, Petrucci always says it's "the Steves and the Als". Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Steve Howe, Al Di Meola, Allan Holdsworth and, of course, Alex Lifeson. He's always said that out of all of them, Alex Lifeson was probably the most influential. In other words, he's a MAJOR Rush fan. He was probably fan-boying out of his mind sitting next to Geddy.

Maybe Lee and Lifeson should get Petrucci (without to leaving Dream Theater) on board. LLP.

+SadisticStang That is a joke . Hendrix was better than him in every way. He changed music was an innovator . Lifeson was good but sorry not great. The thing that impessed me most about Lifeson is he doesn't have an ego. He had Gary Moore, Steve Morse, Eric Johnson, Paul Gilbert all open for Rush. All of them are better than him but he chose to learn from them by watching them instead of feeling threatened.

Lifeson was never an innovator, but what he has over Moore, Morse, Johnson and Gilbert is song writing ability - that often overlooked talent in guitarists!

I don't think Neil and Mike Portnoy were, like, buddies or anything. MP made a fuss in the music press over some negative comments that Neil made about a Rush tribute album that DT contributed to, as well as some comments which MP interpreted to be anti-American. Then Neil called MP on the phone and they made up. That was probably the extent of their relationship but, MP being MP, he started name-dropping Neil afterwards like they were pals. I'm not sure if they ever even met face to face.

John shows hints in his facial expressions when he is asking his songwriting question to geddy (and his distinct attentiveness to everything geddy is saying) that are similar to the faces I know I would make if I ever had 60 seconds to just sit and talk to John one on one. I had to look up the word, but it is mudita: the joy that someone feels based on the joy of someone else. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy that my absolute idol is is so giddy (for geddy lol) over talking to one of his idols.

They mention in one of DT's docos that it was while waiting outside to see Rush on Power Windows tour that they came up with their original name, Majesty.

It was weird and went a bit long, but I think Alex made quite a statement about the emptiness of the award, given so many of the so-called artists who got it *before* groups like Rush.

Nikki No Nose Just because he's never had a big hit like anyone you mentioned is irrelevant. Just because Jimmy Page can write a song that becomes very popular, doesn't mean his playing is anything more than pentatonic scaling up the neck.

For the most part Rush (and a lot of other bands) are way better song writers than Dream Theater. However, there are a few songs from Dream Theater that I think are just amazing pieces of work (technical and also song writing wise) Illimunation Theory The Count of Tuscany Breaking all Illusions A Nightmare to Remember I think all four of those songs had some really killer riffs and great song writing. At points, those songs could even satisfy main stream "hook" addicts.

Most likely he loves them along with his love of trump! Love RUSH and always will! Dream Theater is a band I no longer listen to as they love to mix and promote their religion and political views in their music. Yes they have talent, but never, ever will be on the same level as RUSH. I believe they have turned into a Metallica tribute band as the years went one.

Everyone who's now a great progressive and metal player did. In that regard John Petrucci's no different than me or any one else with a clue. Alex was/is a great progressive player but most who probably have no business calling themselves a guitarist, and only see quantity and scalar complexity of notes, don't understand why and should probably put the guitar down and wrench on cars or something more practical for their life's work.

LudwigSC93 They are indeed so wrong. Without Rush there would be no DT. And personally I think Rush's music far surpasses DT's, who only had one awesome album, Images and Words. Rush covered far more musical ground than DT. Just listen to Hemispheres, then Moving Pictures, then Grace Under Pressure, then Power Windows and Hold Your Fire. Just about every album Rush did is essential listening, IMO. Power Windows, for me, is an absolute masterpiece. As for technical ability, I would say Peart matches Portney (and of course is far more of a drum God on account of influencing so many and doing it 20 years earlier!), and Geddy easily triumphs over Myung. Tonally I would say that Lee is one of the best sounding bass players ever. Seriously, how many Myung bass-lines do you remember? Geddy's bass-lines are some of the best ever recorded, by anyone, anywhere. Lifeson also has awesome tone and feel, and of course co-wrote all of Rush;s music. Whilst Petrucci has impeccable technique, I would far rather listen to Lifeson. I would also say that Lee's voice is far cooler and more characteristic than LaBrie's, even though he is not a singer first. Also, from the point of view of arrangements, it is not fair to compare a 5 piece band to a 3 piece band.

Gavin Z Gavin, all good points but really there is no reason even to try to justify Rush vs DT. There is absolutely no comparison between the 2. Rush are legendary and cannot be touched by DT. And this is not to put DT down. Just the facts :)
