No, the constant laughing was stupid. Grevious was so much better as a silent killer in his first appearance in the original Clone Wars cartoon. Sadly, they turned him into giggling Snidely Whiplash after that.
Grievous was meant to be a symbol of terror, against strong opponents he still utilizes that strategy, but against weaker targets that he’s already vastly outnumbered and effectively beaten already, it just helps shatter the remaining morale
Three rules for scary Greivous: 1. Have his combat utilize his rotational multi-limbed nature to make him a unique foe. 2. Don't have him talk so much - allows for better "show don't tell" and keeps him from devolving into his "Mwahaha die Jedi scum! Hahaha! *coughing*" routine from the early Clone Wars seasons. 3. He is a general, don't have him rely on his droids as a crutch, but as a tool. Safe to say this scene accomplished all those rules.
1. Yeah it's nice to see his abilities used in full form. I'll give you that. 2. I like him talking, his personality & attitude is crazy good. So I disagree. He was probably only quiet here since the fight was so easy, he was simply relishing in her struggles. But for the most part, I don't want him to be another Darth Vader. 3. I mean, I don't think he ever really NEEDS his droids in a fight. He does use them as tools sometimes. And every example I can think of where it's looked like he, "needed them," he didn't actually. For example, during the Eeth Koth fight, even if Koth did land a lightsaber strike on Grievous, he'd just tank it.
@@willrowe6088 General Grievous gave no fucks about her or the fight. If they were actually alone, he likely would have put effort in. Furthermore, what would she have done while he was down? He could have easily just tanked or blocked a strike, gotten back up n' carried on like he did against Kit Fisto. He likely just couldn't even be bothered, she was dead either way according to him.
I have to disagree with the second bit. Grievous was the precursor to Vader. It would make sense if he didn’t speak during most fights. It’s ironic in a way.
@@thataberranthalo8032 I don't understand why every threatening bad guy has to be the stoic type. Have ya'll never heard of Gilgamesh, Megatron, Doctor Doom?
It only took......what? 15 years for that to come back? It only happened in his introductoon (the original clone wars cartoon), and now, probably the last time we'll see him
@@m4x927side note: I think Anakin's personal low wasn't slaughtering younglings, it was being captured and bartered for Grievous in a prisoner swap after Gungans bravely captured that bombad warrior lol yousaa screwed upp sa
I love how Grievous used that third lightsaber on the right side to kill Morgan's mother because in the Clone Wars when he invaded Dathomir, Ventress cut off his bottom left arm or something like that. So it's nice to see that flow into this scene.
@@SkyOfflaneOnly to be fair with Jedi. He can’t really play with his food. He probably would have destroyed her in three seconds, but he doesn’t really have to here he can wait a little bit and besides, it didn’t even look like he was struggling at all against her.
@@SkyOfflaneOnly it just seems like he was just playing with her. He could’ve killed her in 3 seconds. He even tossed her so he could fight some more for fun.
To be fair to the Clone Wars, there were genuinely some scenes in the mid and late seasons where he was a horrifying force of nature. The show just started off REALLY weak, but as a kid I remember his boarding of a ship in one episode being a really good show of him
Interestingly, grievous killed Morgan’s mother in a similar way he killed Nahdar Vebb. While having them in saber lock, grievous cheats with a hidden weapon.
I hate the "Grevious cheats" arguments because he's literally fighting space wizards without having any powers himself. Hell, jedis and siths fight using the force and clairvoyance/precognition to predict and counter each other's moves, yet Grevious still keeps up without force powers. If anything, he's a true practitioner of the Art of War/Book of Five rings, doing anything to win/survive because that is true war.
I will be honest when i saw grevious in the first time from the 2003 microseries he became my most fevorite charcter in SW. This grevious is so close to that beast they made back there its amazing. Ngl if i was in SW and i will here this laugth i will run away..
@@vladlenvolkov9034 It's probably the closest we'll get to 2003 version. There are aspects that wouldn't really work with how this CW is compared to 2003. For example: General physical prowess of basically everyone in 2003 was way higher (Windu fistfighting an entire army of B2s, Grievous chasing down an elevator by running down the side of a building) This version of Grievous has already shown that he has his classic lung problems so it's safe to assume that he wouldn't even be able to achieve the strength and agility of 2003 version. What does come close to the 2003 version is him not talking until he's done fighting and using his body in more inventive way during combat. Most importantly, he wasn't played off as a joke but as a terrifying opponent they have no way to beat.
I love how they fixed grievious to be simular to his 2003 version, and no longer a joke for laughs and a coward like his 2008 version, this feels actualy threatening and like a feared general that killed countless jedi.
This was perfect. It was like watching the 2003 Grevious in 3D animation. Fast, intimidating, and aggressive. He even uses his cyborg body to catch his opponent off guard, using his extra hands to one-up his opponent in compromised positions. I wish he was always this way in The Clone Wars.
I lost my shit when she pulled up with the egyptian/summerian kopesh axes from the third millenium B.C. against the four-armed cyborg warrior with laser swords.
@@toastle8005 Among other things, such as less curvature, the blade being on the outer edge, the average length being longer and generally speaking the general purpose, that being a sickle is a farming tool that can be used as a weapon in a pinch while a khopesh is designed as a weapon first and foremost.
My favorite part of this is how they bring some of the “horror movie monster” energy back to Grievous here. Except for a small part in the duel, he only moves in one direction. Forwards.
This just show how a character without the force can be in trouble while facing grievous if the Jedi didn’t had the force he could probably kill a lot of theme, I mean more than he already has
0:58 I like this. General Grievous is agile enough that he can even use his feet in ways you wouldn't expect. Still would love to get some of that very asymmetrical fighting from the Clone Wars toon where he wielded 3 lighsabers: 2 in his hands and a third held by his leg. Made him amazingly hard to predict.
@@victor2641 Depends on the execution. We still have idiots blade binding and just staring at each other over their blades for dramatic effect and people don't question it much.
This just shows that Grievous needs his own show. In terms of design and how iconic he is he’s arguably better than Darth Vader himself in those aspects.
This is my ideal Grievous, an extremely powerful, sociopathic monster that still has this layer of goofiness to him with that voice, and enjoys the thrill of the hunt
Imagine if Greivous was this scary in every TCW scene he was in (he should have been). I imagine Filoni didn't direct this because for once the viewer actually sees him as a threat
When I saw that the series began with the assault on Dathomir, I did not believe that General Grievous would appear again. after all he was busy with ventress
0:06 I love how the droid army temporarily ceases fire so the sisters can devote their full attention to Grievous’s epic entrance, and once that’s over they resume shooting at 0:16 😂
I can understand why Morgan’s mum didn’t win the fight, but I’d at least expect her magic enchanted weaponry to remain unaffected by Grievous’ lightsaber strikes. What was the point in her chanting that spell on the item and then it not enhancing the metal to remain durable?
The metal was never going to be durable enough, those runes were the only stopping him from cutting the blades up and when the runes faded, the weapon it along with it. Also, this is fucking Grievous we're talking about, not some Rebels Inquisitor, he's killed and fought much more powerful people, this campaign of slaughter was most likely some of the most fun Grievous ever had. There's a reason only named jedi tend to fight him more then once, anyone else who did is dead. Morgan did not have the experience to keep up, not to mention Grievous is a cyborg.
@@Haloguy3959I’m not really confused by Grievous winning, I just expected her weapon to remain unscathed even when she lost because she did that spell and it looked all for nothing. IMO the flames should’ve remained despite the strength of Grevious’ impact. (*Spoiler from Ashoka - don’t read ahead if you haven’t watched and intend to) Like how Morgan’s enchanted sword remained in the same condition throughout her last fight with Ahsoka, despite the fact that she lost.
Just looks to be a weaker enchantment to me. Also it was probably just a temporary one at that because why else would she not have it like that all the time? Or at least before grievous showed up because there is already an attack going on. With that in mind it makes me think it was a quick activation of her weapon that already had a weaker enchantment, so she just needs to buy some time for her sisters/or get a quick win. Also she looks like a mid or lower rank sister so she probs doesn’t have any of the stronger shit the higher ups have so there’s that too. But I’m no expert so I’m probably wrong.🤔
I always thought Grievous looked cool but outside of his original appearance in the Clone Wars cartoon (in which he's an absolute monster) I thought he never really lived up to his reputation. But him mockingly repeating "run" while laughing is the scariest thing I've ever seen in Star Wars.
Look kids. We finally met an army that is undeniably worse than the Battle Droids. Think about it, if you connect this to the original clone wars episode, they had every advantage you could offer: Knowledge of their home turf. Impeded terrain. Knowledge of Droid army tactics. Concealed (high) positions. A LITERAL UNDEAD ARMY. Ventress. Their "magic". And yet... they did everything to nullify those advantages: Openly engaging the droid armies in one mass attack. Giving up their concealed (higher) positions to fight the droids head on. Fighting lines of coordinated Droid laser fire with laser "bows" and traditional weapons rushing at them. Their undead army had no weapons of their own and had to also rush the enemy to do anything. Ventress didn't kill Grievous (she couldn't have, we know this, but still it counts as a fumble on her part). None of the other sisters used the magic other than the mother and she was too busy "playing with dolls" instead of just finishing Dooku off in seconds and then driving off the Droid army with her powers (again, we know Dooku had plot armor here but it still counts as a HUGE TACTICALLY ×××× UP WHEN IT RESULTS IN HER SPECIES BEING NEARLY RENDERED EXTINCT.
Seeing this just reaffim my belief that the original clone wars was basically an in-universe propaganda cartoon for the republic And that the other series shows the real side of the clone wars
Grievous yet again *Uses his other arm to kill an opponent in an unearned cheap shot *Doesnt overpower or out skill them *Uses his droids to do some of the fighting instead of just himself *Fights someone he should be able to kill easily but instead gets a long fight scene to show off their “skill” “Oh but this is scary Grievous” This is absolute trash compared to 2003 Grievous. Even RotS Grievous is far more competent.
ROTS was the literally the worst depiction of the character. Dude couldn't even be bothered to use his lightsabers properly. Atleast here, they showed him actually being able to kill somebody instead of running away. That's more than enough since Grievous was already doomed to be a waste the moment Lucas felt he would outshine Vader.
@@melvinbigsmokeharris7640 Grievous lost easily in RoTs because that was SUPPOSED to be the first time he fought Obi Wan. But instead, thanks to the “genius” of Dave Filloni, we’re stuck in this weird loop where Grievous has a rivalry with Obi Wan even though it makes absolutely no sense in the film. You get no indication they’ve ever met before or Grievous actually “hates” Obi Wan.
@@omarbaba9892 You… you have seen what the Jedi were capable of in that series right? Like Mace Windu using his bare hands on a horde of B2 Super Battle Droids and winning? A lot of the live action and 3D animation is toned down because it’s physically impossible to portray in the case of the former, and incredibly difficult/labour intensive to do with the latter. Things like say the Revenge of the Sith novelisation states Grievous striking up to 20 times in the span of a second in his last duel, (so 5 strikes per second per arm), only for Kenobi to block or evade every single one through precognition and force enhancement. Power levels are bonkers because the writing is all over the place, everywhere all the time.
@@rustkarl yes I have seen that but then what wasn’t canon with that series? The Mace battle scene could be said to have been purposefully portrayed as over the top but Grevious canonically killed about 4 Jedi at once so did then characters just not exist then?
@@omarbaba9892 I mean, when Disney took over they basically retconned the character so now we have no idea what they decided to keep. Lair of Grievous specifically threw his entire backstory into question.
@@rustkarl well it’s pretty obvious what was kept, everything was wiped except the 6 original films and the clone wars, the clone wars already massively retconned a lot of the expanded universe anyway since Lucas didn’t like it
The "evil villain laugh" trope is so played the hell out and corny. Like, its a cliche, and so more often analyzed. "Why is he laughing?" The answer: "because hes eViL!" But here? Grievous' laughing is spot on for his character, hes a mad, sadistic genocide robot. He isnt laughing "because hes evil", hes laughing because killing a girl's mother in front of her during a genocide campaign is something he genuinely _enjoys_ doing.
