Generator Battery Dead! Will it still Run?

Not all Generators are the same. When the battery is dead some dual fuel units may only run on one specific fuel. Gas or either propane. Some will do both. Make sure you check that way you know which fuel it will run on if the battery is dead. Hope this helped you out. #generator #tips #inverter #dualfuel

I think what is going on on most of the tests is that if you start the generator with a little bit of gas in the carb, then it produces just enough power to energize the electric solenoid that permits propane flow. After that, it continues to run on propane. So I think if you started with dry gasoline tanks, the results would be different.
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Год назад
I guess I could start them with it on propane to make sure solenoid is fully activated into the carb which stops fuel flow, then try again with a restart on propane. That way any initial gas would have been used.
@guyin916
@guyin916 6 месяцев назад
@brindlebrown you are correct. I noticed many manufactures have instructions for powering down. This includes closing the fuel valve, running engine until shutoff. This is on non-inverters in my experience.

That is what I was thinking as well ... the small amount of gas left after the gasoline test was maybe enough to start the generator and then the propane starting working. I mainly want to use my dual fuel running on propane but this may be a work around if my battery doesn't have enough charge.

I replaced the 7ah lead acid with 6ah Lifepo4 pack i made from old cells. It starts the genset. Everytime. And the self discharge is so low on them that when i bought them they were already sitting on the shelf for four years since manufacturing yet they had 3.6v I bought each cell for slightly more than a $ each. So nearly 6$ for the whole pack with meritals. Got a deal on them because the cells were old & expired.

Thank you for the video. One issue that you didn't address, at least in this video, is: Does a generator without a battery actually produce an AC output? Under what circumstances might or might it not produce an AC output? What if there isn't enough residual magnetism in the rotor to self-excite?

Thanks Johnny, that's a really valuable test. I am fairly sure all the single cylinder standard gasoline only generators will run without the battery unless they are fuel injected. I think all of the V-twin generators need battery power to run the ignition. The designers of those generators that won't run without battery power obviously don't understand necessary critical operation when the generator is used for backup emergency power. If you are serious about maintaining your backup power, you will run your generator periodically to exercise it and and make sure it is performing properly. However, the average person doesn't think about the generator until the power is out. I can't speak for the Lithium batteries the generators are starting to come with now but, the sealed lead-acid batteries typically last 1 - 2 years if left in the generator, which is generally stored in a room with an uncontrolled temperature. I have had so much trouble with these batteries dying, that I only install the battery in the unit when I actually use it. When not being used, I keep the battery in a controlled environment and charge it every 2 months, which extends the battery life to at least 5 years. Mounting any battery inside one of these soundproofed generators results in a brutal operating environment for the battery, with the heat being the number one problem. This holds true for the Lithium batteries as well as the lead-acid, the battery should never be exposed to temperatures over 90F/32C. If the battery is mounted properly, it will be in front of the air intake for the inverter circuit. My concern with the use of lithium-ion batteries in these generators is, if overheated, they could catch on fire (a fire that is self-sustaining) but, time will tell.
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Год назад
Hi Bill, thanks. Yes most people will not due proper generator exercise or sometimes even maintenance. I know people who bought a generator and have it ready to go, so they say but it’s still new in the box! 🤷🏼‍♂️ I tell people you need to check it! Ohh but they may want to return it lol… hey to each there own. And yea will be interesting to see how long some of these lithiums do in the enclosed environment especially in summer when the internal temp could be 120f inside those. And yea that’s the problem with lithium, once they start on fire, thermal runaway is a bitch!!! Sorry for that last part but it’s cool to see and not!!! 😂👍🏼

@billharris6886 Год назад
@@johnnysweekends Ha ha, you are so right about the (popular) zero maintenance plan. I live in Florida and every so often on Facebook Marketplace I see people selling their generator still sealed in the original box that they bought when a hurricane was threatening. The box often times has water, grease, and dust stains from sitting in the garage for a few years. To top things off, they list a selling price that is the same or slightly higher than new ones in the store.
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Год назад
Yea they buy them when things look like it might get hairy, and of course then demand is up and so is price. So they don’t use them and then try to sell during normal times with not much demand. So unfortunately they are going to take a decent hit. I like the “I have a generator, so I’m good.” Oh nice, what kind is it? “Idk I forget, its still in the box.” 🤦🏼‍♂️

Catch 22 with an electric fuel valve: Without electrical power, the fuel valve won't open. Without fuel, it won't start. Heavy cranking might just generate enough electrical power to open the fuel valve. Energy to open the valve could be different for fuel types. Also, it could depend if the generator was just running previously. There could be just a minute amount of fuel remaining in the carburetor jet. There may still be some propane in the hose going to the carburetor. A manual valving could make it start reliably.

The Genmax dual fuel I assume. Wow thats really weird to not have it run on either. Is the propane tank new..? Some new tanks need to be cycled for higher flows like a generator. Did you look inside to make sure battery is connected. I assume it is. I would change the spark plug just for the heck of it. I actually had a new unit a long time ago and kinda the same problem and popped a new plug in and bam away it went. That’s not normally the case though. If not maybe you should return it asap. Normally if it doesn’t run on gas it will run on propane. That would mean the carb low speed jet is plugged. You are priming the propane regulator correct..?

I have the Genmax 9000 IEDC with 10 hours in the clock. It was stored drained or gas on the tank and carb. The battery reads 12.5 volts but will not crank up to start. @johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends 8 месяцев назад
The battery at 12.5 volts is about 70 percent charged. And being a little battery that might not be enough. I would try it on propane pull start only. Turn unit to on position and then open the propane set up and try and pull start it. It’s will take a few to purge the propane but not much. The battery can be replaced at a batteries plus or sports vehicle shop. They normally can find replacements. The batteries are small son unfortunately charge doesn’t last to long. Did you proceed the test with „warm generators“? Wondering that I can’t pull start mine without or with dead battery if it didn’t run for two weeks. If I do start it with a proper battery it’s no problem to then disconnect the battery and restart it by pulling the cord. Afaik the genmax does not have a manual choke, so I think it controls the choke on a electric basis. So without a working battery and a generator which isn’t warm maybe it won’t start because the choke isn’t „activated“? What’s your appreciated thoughts about that?

Good video, thank you, but a comment on language. In Usian, you refer to "gas" meaning gasoline, whereas in English we call this "petrol". Then you are stuck with what to call the propane. It's actually a real gas, and we would call it "gas" in English. In USian, you need to be very specific about what sort of gas it is. So, you need to specify Hydrogen, methane, ethane, propane, butane. In English, all of those would be gas. 😄
