Genesis Owusu - Struggler ALBUM REVIEW 

I actually got to speak to genesis at a local record store in Melbourne, he's such a real dude, just wanted to talk all day about his influences and who he wants to work with. Apparently he really wants to work with Peggy lol

If you have the chance to see Genesis live, do it. You will not be disappointed.

saw him touring with Tame Impala back in october and HOLY SHIT he was beyond amazing. full of energy and passion

So awesome to see him get some recognition! So many good Aussie artists but they very rarely break through the international barrier, good to see the man from my home town has broken the mould!

That's Life (A Swamp) is easily one of the standouts from this album. Genny Owusu doing us aussies proud with another classic. Highly recommend seeing him live. He puts on a hell of a show packed with energy.

I've had the pleasure to talk with him after a gig years ago in our hometown - he was a common fixture of the Canberra live scene. Mad chiller, so cool to see him crushing it these days.

I thought SWNT was better because it had higher highs like The Other Black Dog, Gold Chains etc, but this album is still awesome and lyrically potent. Great album from one of the most promising artists right now.

I purchased the red vinyl for my buddy, because he collects records. He's also the one who introduced me to Owusu. When we got the box it was fast and in top condition. Vinyl cover in peak condition. And a card with a markered signature. I am very impressed and we were both very excited to see it. Good album fr.

Really happy to see this album get a bump, Ive been a big Genesis Owusu fan for awhile and this album really came out at the right time for me, as I got diagnosed with a tumor back in June that thankfully turned out to be benign, but even after it was removed finally a few weeks ago Im having some side effects that have made daily life and just trying to be normal again a struggle. Im having to come to terms with the fact that normal may not be something I experience again, Im not really sure at this point, I dont know if Ill even be able to go out and do stuff other than work if it doesnt get better, and I have to keep going to work to survive. All that to say listening to this album is pretty cathartic, and even if my current situation doesnt change I hope I can learn to deal with it better over time and find peace somehow.

Love love love Genesis. Was initially disappointed at how tight and streamlined this project felt, because I loved the genre-bending, meandering, "have so many ideas"ness of SWNT, but I have now listened to Struggler probably 40 times front to back since it came out and I enjoy it more each time. So many catchy hooks, lots of anthems, no low points. That's Life (A Swamp) is one of the most danceable songs I've heard in a minute.

In the blurb on Apple Music, he says the character and the narrative of the story is inspired by Guts from Berserk. Goated.

I listened to this album on a whim, I had never heard of Genesis Owusu, and was kind just making my round through some new albums. What an intense, focused and vibey experience. Excited to dive into Owusus catalog, and listen to this album a few hundered more times. Appreciate the review!

Fun fact we’ll this album and it’s story is very much inspired by many classic works of literature like waiting for Godot or Metamorphosis, the series with the biggest influences on the album and concept is the legendary goated manga berserk. The title “the struggler.” Is a direct reference to the book and one of its most famous quotes, as someone who is read the series as we speak and got to that part around the time the albums drop seeing the connections made this even better as the story of the roach is not much different to guts. Even more fun fact I had a feeling genesis liked this stuff as the leaving the light video had very much dark souls and dark fantasy vibes and well it seems it was very clearly intended. So finding out this album is a berserk reference makes sense.

I saw him live and he brought some crazy energy

I haven't seen him live, but I did see Peggy at the Enmore theatre in Sydney just months after Owusu performed there and LITERALLY CAVED THE FLOOR IN. Owusu goes HARD.

This is a totally crazy and cool genre bending album. I really enjoy all the effects in the production and the vocals. I have been listening to Genesis for about 7 months now, and I can say I am very happy that I started doing so. Solid 7/10 imo

I wasn't a huge fan of Genesis until I saw him open for Paramore. He totally blew me away. Everyone should go see him live if they can! This album is great too!

He's such a good guy. I worked with a girl in the care system, and he made a video for her and her worker, they just needed to ask him. Super approachable and really down to earth.

I loved this album but I definitely felt like it was bound to pale in comparison to his dynamic and massive debut. SMWNT offered so many sonic directions performed amazingly and Struggler dials it back on the wide palettes for a more focused album that is still very fun but significantly less charismatic than the former. Genesis took him self seriously on this project, did new things and sidestepped SMWNT's shadow, but the content was weak at points such as the one-too-many stripped back/ballad cuts Old Man / Stuck To The Fan / first half of That's Life. I'm surprised you rated it so highly, I'd dock it down just a point.

I saw Genesis touring with Paramore in May and absolutely loved his sound! So excited to see where he goes :)

I saw Genesis Owusu at Madison Square garden a couple of months ago when he was touring with Paramore and Bloc Party. He was absolutely amazing! I couldn’t believe how energetic and strong his performance was. I instantly fell in love with his music.

I got into Gen through Crash Thompson, I’ll forever be indebted to Crash, Genesis is a breath of fresh air for sure. I absolutely loved his debut album. I saw him on his first tour of it in H-Town with Lenora as the opener. She also rocked my world, she was on stage and she made eye contact with me, pointed and said, “I know you know your power.” I almost fainted. Then I found her in the mosh pit dancing to Black Dogs! at the end of the show and I had to get a picture and talk to her, definitely one of my favorite concerts I’ve been to. And Genesis stole the show with Song About Fishing and SWNT.

On my initial listen through, I was left mildly disappointed by the very directed approach sonically and topically relative to Smiling With No Teeth. The album sounds very cohesive, which isn’t a bad thing; but when you have SWNT as the precursor, which was a gut punch of new sounds with each song, I began to worry that it would feel old quickly. However this album seems to get better with each listen I give it. I love the relatability of the album, and I think the cohesiveness does this album tremendously- considering what he’s tackling conceptually. All that to say, I had high expectations for this album, and he didn’t disappoint. If you haven’t already, do yourself the favor of blessing yourself with this man’s music.

I do love how this album took a more rock approach and well not as good in some moment as his debut it is more focused and consistent and I adore it.
