What about getting a nice uniformly round piece of meat, for example an eye fillet, and having it actually rotating IN the butter? Set it up so the bottom of the meat is actually dunked in the butter, say half an inch deep, and it'll constantly drag butter up and over itself.
@Gruuvin1

Exactly. It makes too much sense.
@JanVokas

Maybe use clarified butter for this - you can avoid over-burning of the butter in tray (higher smoking temperature point of the clarified butter).

Seems if you bent the spoons a bit or used small gravy ladles it might work better but looks like it works fine. Looks delicious.

If butter always makes things better, and bacon always makes things better - when do we get the bacon-wrapped, self-butter-basted roast, Pitmaster?
@gballs007
@gballs007 2 года назад
Easy..wrap bacon around the bones...and just let the bones slightly dip into the liquid butter as it turns...and it would spread across the roast as it turned upwards by itself...(and would get some bacon flavor spread over the roast itself from it slightly dipping into the butter...no gadgets or spoons needed....easy peasy!

I have an idea. How about using a sacrificial kitchen towel to tie to the bones which dips (then drips) over the meat? So, tie most of the towel to the rack bones, then have a 2-3 inch section which drips into the butter pan. Oh, I feel hungry already.
@gballs007

I don't know that spoons are the best shape for this. I would think something like a wedge shaped trough would get a larger amount of butter, and maybe with some trial and error, you could get it basting both sides. Maybe some holes in the back of the trough?

QQQ - Is there anything particularly special about butchers twine other than cotton only? Here in the Philippines I can't find any store that knows what it is, much less have any in stock. Can I use just regular cotton string?
@dougiefresh9618

Yes
@gballs007
@gballs007 2 года назад
Yes..its just cotton string...only difference is usually butchers twine is more tightly wound so it can hold more weight and stay strong compared to regular cotton string...but it makes no difference... as long as it's 100% cotton, you can use it

Ahhh the memories... To make spending money (and cure boredom) I worked (part-time) at a summer job at a 4-star resort restaurant on Lake Wawasee, Ind., when I was 16... I was promoted year two, from dishwasher to line cook... That's where and how I learned how to cook great steaks and ribs in the chargrill, among other great stuff like beer-batter fish... Every weekend we did a REAL Prime Rib that was melt-in-your-mouth pure Heaven!! (Not even close to ANY steak places these days)... When the rest of my grandparents family joined us (my grandparents and myself) for a week of lake fun, I arranged through the restaurant to let me cook a whole prime rib roast (that cost me $35, a week's wages at the time), at the restaurant... I kept it a secret, only telling them "I'd supply the meat, you all cook everything else." The family was impressed that ME, a 16 year old girl, could pull off such an awesome feat... The roast was an obvious hit... I basted it throughout with spices and herbs, it came out a perfect medium-rare, juicy, full of flavor, tender, to perfection!! It was talked about for years after, "The great summer vacation and the BEST DINNER up at the lakes!"

Fab idea, not convinced the spoons were actually doing any basting though. If you had a deeper tray of butter then you could constantly dunk the who piece of meat into it as it rotated? Might need to take the bones back further but no drama.

Someone should make a scoop that goes the whole length of the roast. Tines that stick into the meat and a deep scoop tray to maximize the basting liquid. A water jet and a small welder would be perfect
@gballs007
@gballs007 2 года назад
Instead of all that work, you could just have a small part of the roast dip lightly into the liquid butter as it turned, then it could run down the rest of the roast as it turned upwards...no need for spoons, gadgets, etc... just a tray of liquid butter needed...easy peasy

I would of tilted the tray upwards some, this way it would of grabbed more butter. The excess butcher twine would also work as someone in the comments suggested "Mrabletospeak" but it might make a splattering mess and flop in different directions as the roast shrinks? I think properly designed Spoons would work a whole lot better. After the spoon a flexible channel. Then at the end of the channel a fork like spoon with 3-4 Points so the butter will be distributed evenly ? Those pointed Edges at the end of the Spoon will help the butter drip evenly. Spoon center channel should be flexible so you can adjust for direction of basting. Flexible like a goose neck. The Self Basting Spoon?
