I wasn't expecting too much from Geoff Castellucci's, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen performance. I know he's great, but you can only do so much with a song like this right? Well... hope you enjoy my reaction!

Once again, Dan, thank you for your honest opinion. I don't always agree, but you make me think about the points you bring up. The purpose of reactors is to expand my understanding of the material . If I didn't want to learn more I would only watch the original video over and over without having my view broadened. Merry Christmas.

We can disagree about the bass drops while still both thoroughly enjoying the man's incredible talent and performance.

Love his arrangement and the Geoff Quartet harmonies. Starts out traditionally then kicks it up and makes it more fun than I remember hearing and singing it as a child. Now I can't carry a tune in a bucket. Geoff and VoicePlay need more Patrons like myself to do these amazing videos.

Agree completely! I think the term that’s being used now is Geofftet. 😂

I too am a patron of Geoff and Voiceplay. $5 and up has behind the scenes videos. All very awesome but no step by step. Until his last video. The Rains of Castamere. He does a basic step by step of the process. All of them and Voiceplay behind the scenes videos are very interesting. Voiceplay has a new video out as well. I Can't Make You Love Me.

Hmmm. Your offer of delivering coal is intriguing. Would it be bituminous or anthracite? Anyway, I enjoy your reactions. I’m a proud patron of both Geoff and VoicePlay, and there are always BTS (behind the scenes) videos for all of their work. They also answer questions during monthly podcasts and live chats. On Geoff’s RU-vid page you can find an informative (and fun) video of how he arranges a song. You could react to it, or just watch it for your own enjoyment. If you’re looking for something new, try something from Pattycake Productions. Since its Christmas time, you might start with Descendants Christmas - Naughty or Nice. It’s an original song by Layne (VoicePlay) and Tony (formerly VoicePlay) based on the Disney Descendants movies. (The song runs through 3:50 - after that is a commercial. Their productions are even more costly than VoicePlay - and yes, I’m a patron of theirs also!)

I agree that it must be a ton of work - and money to do these..... and that's why I don't agree with you that he "has enough" patrons. The music business is a rough way to make a living in good times - and with touring cut off? I see a direct connection (for both Geoff and VP) in the production values of their performances and their steadily growing patrons lists. They're spending the money wisely.

Totally agree. I am a patron of both Geoff and VoicePlay and I see a bit of how much goes into producng these videos. And those seen on screen are only a fraction of their patrons I would think as many, like me, can't manage to send enough to have that as a perk. :)

I don't know if my comment was taken wrong, or you didn't hear me say it jokingly. I wasn't criticizing at all. I think being able to support artists through Patreon is a novel way to connect with your audience and fans on a different level.

There's a good reason why he only puts out one video per month or less. Probably he could do more if he doesn't also do it for Voiceplay. He said once that he do his own stuff in his "free" time. In his interview with the charismatic voice he explains it a bit also in his how to make arrangements video has some interesting background stuff.

It seems odd to me that vocal riffs that run high are never considered to be poorly placed, but let the vocal drop deep, and suddenly it's a different story. To me, it's the same thing- an unnecessary, but stylistic, vocal embellishment. And to be fair, he wouldn't perform them if they weren't a large part of his draw, so clearly more people enjoy the bass drops than otherwise. (Also, the most ridiculous of his vocal antics tend to be performed in Layne's arrangements, rather than his own. It seems Layne enjoys having such a versatile vocal instrument at his disposal. Which makes sense- Geoff has a five octave range, absolutely ridiculous agility and control over it, and breath control for days, why *wouldn't* you want to flex that a bit?) All that said, I've loved how Geoff has refined his arrangements recently. He has become terribly effective at bringing the listener in and engaging them emotionally. He keeps his arrangements moving (I don't think there is ever repetition of how a phrase is sung/harmonized, no matter how many times it's repeated), keeps them surprising and creative and different from anything else you've heard, but still familiar at the same time. We're so lucky he shares his music with us for free on this platform (although I'm glad to be a member of his Patreon; I just wish I could give him more money.).

Well said all around! I'm also really glad to be a patron. I had never been a patron of anyone before 2020 when I signed up with VP and Geoff, but a combo of seeing how Covid was wreaking havoc on musicians' careers and the allure of bts fun convinced me. Haven't looked back since!!

If I had the money, there's a number of artists (that I react to, and otherwise) that I'd gladly give money to, and Geoff would be one of them. As far as high runs go, I am much more critical to well performed, and poor timed riffs. As I think they are far more noticeable. And while you can say this is his draw, or trademark, what it really is, is a novelty. He's good without that. His low notes don't make him, in my opinion, its his natural versatility as an artist that makes him.

Yep, Geoff drops those bass bombs sometimes just cuz he can. It bugged me at first but I got used to it. It’s a thing these days-people love those subterranean notes, and it’s kinda his trademark. And he’s just so good. Anyway, great reaction. And if you want to hear some other bassy basses, listen to The Bass Gang.

Shades of Trans-Siberian Orchestra meets Geoff. His outfit is reminiscent of a Cossack/Star Trek. I really enjoyed his arrangement.

I thought the arrangement was pretty great too! I also find Geoff has some of the best outfits. He has some solid tops and jackets

I agree about the bass drops but I probably don’t notice as many as you do. This was a great blend of harmonies from the singing Geoffs. Thanks for your reaction

There are a few bass drops that have bothered me, but the one at the end here didn’t. It made a nice resolution. A nice fat E1.
