Hey everybody I'm Georg Rockall-Schmidt and I made a film (he says, looking away).
And I thought that I would do a video about it this week because, uh, it seems like easy content and I'm very lazy. Alright so let's crack on into it! Why did I make Collaborator?

I hope this doesn’t sound condescending, but you should be proud having made something. I had the inclination to make movies my whole life, but never the will, never the commitment. Anyone who has a go at making any art should be commended

I'm quite more honest interested in Georg's personally journey. I've been following his channel his video on Aliens. He's kind of an obscure creator, like Drue Langlois' animation channel here on RU-vid.

I doubt you can really blame not having will or commitment - you just had those for other things, perhaps more important things. You might say that is what you meant, but you didn't see you have other things you needed to do, you simply blamed will and commitment, and maybe it IS that simple, but usually it is not. Don't sell yourself short to yourself or others.

I think everyone who makes a movie on a very small, very independent scale, feels nothing but disappointment when they first release it. Whether the movie is good or bad, it feels like running a marathon and everyone's gone home by the time you cross the finish line.

I feel like that distance from the shooting is never talked about. But it is damn helpful. I shot most of a short about a year back now but it had fallen apart in the end, only half of the thing was filmed. I tried to cut the scenes together but still felt too close to the project, I sat on it since then and finally edited what I had into a somewhat decent assembly cut, just little ideas came to me when I got some distance from that project, and upon hearing the temp score for the thing (which my sound/co editor/everything else man threw together) I've really felt excited about the project, in the same way I did before shooting went to shit😂. Very interesting to finally hear you say that about editing a project.

I make games and I sometimes use voice actors. Usually, I contract directly with the artists, which has worked out great every time. I have only had to deal with an agent once, for a guy who was very very slightly famous. Fuck me. I have no idea what an agent is for if it's not to be sand in the gears and do everything they can to stop their client from working. It took forever and they kept changing the contract, hoping I wouldn't notice. In the end I didn't use him. He's no longer represented by them and his career seems to have evaporated. Thanks agents.
@x--.
@x--. Год назад
It's got to be a tough job, right? All the responsibility (if things go wrong, you'll be the first one blamed) but none of the glory. So your only chance is that one of your flock makes it big and you get your payday. And top of that, you may have an actor who thinks of themselves very highly and has very unrealistic expectations. Luckily (for producers?), there are always more actors out there. Damn, never thought I'd be empathizing with the blood sucking agents but... unless you're already on top or you're really good at picking winners, you've got a terrible job.
@tmcthree
@tmcthree Год назад
@@x--. What on earth are you talking about? "All the responsibility", when have you ever heard of an agent get any blame whatsoever when "things go wrong". When an actor is miscast, puts in a bad performance or the film is a turkey, it's the Actor, Director, Writer or maybe the Producer that will get the blame, never will anyone mention the agent. And why on earth should they get any of the "glory", are you out of your mind, glory for what exactly? It's also worth noting that in the example I gave, when things went wrong, there was very little in the way of consequences for the agent. The agency still exists and is doing fine, the actor on the other hand is really struggling. None of the actors I've worked with had "unrealistic expectations" they were all down to earth and just wanted to work. Even the guy with the agent was great until the agent got involved. So no. Being an agent is not a tough job. It's a middleman.
@x--.
@x--. Год назад
@@tmcthree oh certainly I thought our context made it clear: all the responsibility for an actor-director relationship pre-production. Your example actor may mistakenly blame you for the deal falling through but only if they were a complete fool. They'll blame they're agent. Obviously, the only blame they're getting post-production is if the actor feels cheated. _Though_, I will not a HR article on the increase in top tier agencies having a hand in the content game. Bundling actors, directors and scripts. I don't know how common that is these days, though. Sorry, for not being clear.
@tmcthree
@tmcthree Год назад
@@x--. All the responsibility for an actor-director relationship pre-production? What utter bollocks. You think a director takes on an actor on the say so of an agent, you don't think the meet first? Maybe even audition? Please tell me more about how tough the job of an agent is compared to literally anyone working on the creative side.
@x--.
@x--. Год назад
@@tmcthree Whoa, not sure you've come out guns-a-blazing on this one but relationship management *is* hard. Directors are many varied and while I think it's crazy not to audition an actor before casting it _does_ happen. However, when you are at the level of having an agent the *whole* point of that agent is to maximize the economic return for that actor. Actors get agents so they can get into the audition room and/or get paid what they feel they are worth. NO ONE is getting an agent unless they think it will be beneficial. Beneficial bc they have insider access to casting calls *and* can negotiate. It's a mark of being a professional, to have an agent. Does it mean you're any good? Nope. But just like SAG is a trade-off, so to is having an agent. After all, it's the studios/casting directors who believe agents are beneficial by restricting casting calls to those on the inside. *I don't make that decision* but I've certainly seen calls where you can't audition without an agent. I won't pretend to know how agents get that access and build relationships with casting directors but I doubt they get it for free... So look, am I defending the agent system? Definitely not, I've known too many actors who have agents and appear to get no benefit (but they're still getting a 10% cut) -- in fact, it's almost scary how often I hear, "Oh, I found this audition on my own." But how else do you get into the auditions that really pay the bills? If you've got some insider info here then, by all means, share! :D

I found it a better film that most. At the start I wondered about the characters, but by the end I was really invested in the outcome, and the ending worked fine. Knowing now that you had an entire other interrogation scene, actually makes me think you did the right decision to end it where you did. A shame to miss out on the performance, maybe you can re-edit a "directors cut" at some point or maybe, cut some of the first scenes to give a different perspective on the story. But a far better idea than most films I seen in recent years that just don't think through their concept at all, to the point that the only real aim of the film is to take you £12 (or whatever the price of a ticket is these days).

I watched this in its entirety after being stumped by what the trainwreck the movie is. I was hoping to get some insight in why it is the way it is, only to remain confused. I really don't understand what happened.

I mean this in all kindness but I always have trouble with your audio. your podcast auto cuts so tight I can't listen to it, this I can't hear parts over my laptop fan. I really enjoy your stuff but it's really frustrating trying to listen.
