I hear George Carlin’s voice, but it looks like it’s coming from Dick Sargent. 😂

Carlin is really sort of a good barometer as to American television and its tolerances at any given point. He's not that far removed from his time in the Air Force here. He was always pushing boundaries, even back in the 60's on the Sullivan show and such, and his routines were right on the cutting edge of what was acceptable. Obviously then by the 70's he's in court versus the FCC for the seven words, and by the early 80's, he'd become the Carlin we all know by way of the HBO specials. Compare this, which is a pretty good sketch for the era that holds up even today, against his last release, "It's Bad For Ya" just before he died, and it's a whole different world. The man was a genius.

I've just been getting to know and love George Carlin. And I was realizing when he started what you articulated so informatively and eloquently. Yes, he's a genuine genius. It's amazing to have one's thinking educated and evolved while enjoying it with such "humor", and often anger.

Seeing George Carlin so young and in black and white is incredible.

i was 5 years old when he did this. i've only seen him as an adult. you're right; it is awesome to see him in early performances.

Carlin was unsatisfied with the limits on his material. By the end of the Sixties, he used the social upheaval to springboard his career to a new phase, loads of legendary comedy albums and stand up specials.

I’ve gotten so used to seeing George Carlin when he’s old…. I refuse to believe this is him when he was young. Also ngl, for 1965…. That’s some damn high quality there

This was George "you-are-stupid-because-you-disagree-with-me" Carlin before he pretended to be a philosopher.

Kinda sad people think this is pushing the envelope. Especially while Lenny Bruce was doing it all too, and in a much more profound way. Carlin was good at riding the line of controversy, Lenny crossed that line to demonstrate the line shouldn't be. I'm not comparing the two, I'm just kinda shocked how many people don't know of Lenny Bruce, but praise Carlin, when Lenny was paving the way for the future of Stand Up we all love today. Carlin loved to play the "sides" of the line against each other. Lenny was making people confront the reality of censorship, which Carlin eventually did long after Lenny had died. If you love Carlin, you owe it to yourself to seek out and appreciate Lenny Bruce, because he's responsible for Carlin and all your comedians being able to have a platform at all.

I wonder if this is his first Merv appereance? He was very apprehensive about going on Merv and avoided it for a long time.
@ReelinInTheYears66
@ReelinInTheYears66 4 месяца назад
Not true. Merv basically discovered him and booked him as regular. George Carlin was not “apprehensive” and was thrilled to get such a big break.

Yeah. I got Merv mixed up with Ed Sullivan.

He was a hypocrit and a liar. The fact that so many people praised him does speak volumes concerning our current societal decline.
