The idea of flame throwers is old. In ancient times they had claypots with flammable contents that they threw. The Byzantines had "greek fire" which was a flamethrower ahead of it's time. Apart from requiring hand cranked pumps and being deployed from wooden vessels. Which didn't always work out. But the concept was there it was just that the underlying technology wasn't.

actually, flamethrowers are outlawed in the army, but not in the civilian sector. They have their non-terrorism non-murderous uses. think killer bees...

You know the funny thing is, the guy who thought of the flamethrower was a renowned fire chief. His thinking was also strikingly similar to Hiram Maxim , he thought it would be so terrifying that people would just refuse to fight and surrender instead of going up against it.

Per Wikipedia: "In the United States, flamethrowers are broadly legal for personal ownership and use. California requires a permit for the possession of a flamethrower, and only Maryland has outright banned their ownership and use."

this material, maybe at his around midlife 40 to 50 era, compare to his 60+ period, as time goes, he was becoming even better at the delivery, making sure to pause at the right point to let the joke sink into the average joe audience's mind and then because the timing is much better, he gets much better laugh later in life he became really really good at making things seem ironic, and it is really funny
