Excerpt of the 2015 Charlie Rose interview with George Lucas, where Lucas reveals what happened with Disney and how his story and ideas for the true sequel trilogy were discarded.
George Lucas revealing his original plans for the sequel trilogy: "After the Rebels won, there were no more stormtroopers in my version of the third trilogy." "Episode VII, VIII, and IX would take ideas from what happened after the Iraq War. "Okay, you fought the war, you killed everybody, now what are you going to do?" Rebuilding afterwards is harder than starting a rebellion or fighting the war. When you win the war and you disband the opposing army, what do they do?" "The stormtroopers would be like Saddam Hussein's Ba'athist fighters that joined ISIS and kept on fighting. The stormtroopers refuse to give up when the Republic win. They want to be stormtroopers forever, so they go to a far corner of the galaxy, start their own country and their own rebellion." "There's a power vacuum so gangsters, like the Hutts, are taking advantage of the situation, and there is chaos. The key person is Darth Maul, who had been resurrected in The Clone Wars cartoons - he brings all the gangs together." "Darth Maul trained a girl, Darth Talon, who was in the comic books, as his apprentice. She was the new Darth Vader, and most of the action was with her. So these were the two main villains of the trilogy. Maul eventually becomes the godfather of crime in the universe because, as the Empire falls, he takes over." "The movies are about how Leia - I mean, who else is going to be the leader? - is trying to build the Republic. They still have the apparatus of the Republic but they have to get it under control from the gangsters. That was the main story." "It starts out a few years after Return of the Jedi and we establish pretty quickly that there's this underworld, there are these offshoot stormtroopers who started their own planets, and that Luke is trying to restart the Jedi. He puts the word out, so out of 100,000 Jedi, maybe 50 or 100 are left. The Jedi have to grow again from scratch, so Luke has to find two- and three-year-olds, and train them. It'll be 20 years before you have a new generation of Jedi." "By the end of the trilogy Luke would have rebuilt much of the Jedi, and we would have the renewal of the New Republic, with Leia, Senator Organa, becoming the Supreme Chancellor in charge of everything."
"I just wanted to tell a story" Thats the key difference Lucas had a story to tell. Disney had a formula to make money, nothing more... I wish we'd seen George Lucas' sequels.
James P Well chances are the scripts that Iger and company had bought from Lucas were safeguarded elsewhere. It’s unlikely they’d throw something like that away, and chances are it could either be a spinoff show or a future trilogy that covers Lucas’s sequel ideas.
George sold his story and future plans with the series to make money, for better or worse. If he wants to complain about how he’s ashamed how the series worked out, he shouldn’t have sold it.
DeeLan George Lucas was already pretty loaded as far as wealth was concerned, So selling Star Wars wasn’t a huge monetary benefit and was more of a breakup then anything. George also put the responsibility of raising his family over his creation. Even in an interview with Seth macfarlane George stated the one thing he wanted to be remembered for was “Raising his Kids.” And you are forgetting the very reason he sold it was because a bunch of Salty OT fans were unsatisfied that the prequels didn’t reach their ridiculous demands, George sold it because if he was ever involved with it in the future Fans would complain. Funny how that turned out in the end. Now more then ever a majority of fans wish George would come back, but it’s to little, too late.
Dude created one of the biggest franchises ever. Got praise for it. Dude came back and directed his own trilogy in the series. Got shat on for at least 2 decades. Dude sells it and sees it burn. Suddenly everyone wants him back lol.
Makes no sense to me how people could complain so much and then be surprised at what they got. Personally I enjoy all three trilogies and I think it’s ridiculous that you can’t even say that in this fandom without some form of backlash. 🤷🏽♂️ I respect other people’s opinions, but pulling in insults and berating someone over fiction is... Sad? I don’t know how to describe it
Unpopular Opinion but the Anakin Saga (Prequels) is the greatest to me. It's what sparked my interest in the franchise. As a protagonist he had more charisma than Luke who is boring and Rey who is unrelateable. Add the fact he has great supporting cast in young Obi, Windu, Mace, Yoda. The only downside was the dialogue. However the novels it created are gold.
I actually met him once, it was in New York, he was coming out of a restaurant and I said hi to him and told him how much I loved Star Wars and the prequels and he was super nice, he seemed genuinely interested in what I was saying and he seemed very happy to see a fan appreciate ALL of his work 😔
Yes the Lucas clones are way more apt and approachable regarding raving fans as they haven’t been susceptible to em for decades as was the original George. 😂 I kid I kid, indeed.
VOLD GAMER Agreed, there were flaws but still a great story and enjoyable film. Unfortunately, George Lucas had to sell it because of all the hate he was getting for the prequels and he believed Disney would do it better. He even indirectly states it in the video.
@@TheOneAndOnlyHope yeah i know, i feel bad for george lucas, he wanted to finish his story and people hated him for doing that, so i also blame the prequel haters because of the state star wars is in now
Honestly the only thing that was handled poorly with the prequels was the relationship between Anakin and Padme, all the story relating to the war was great with very few hiccups.
Fans: harshly criticize George for years George: I'll tell you what you get, you get what you f***ing deserve sells Star Wars to Disney Fans:what have we done
I'm a fan and I liked the prequels, even when seemingly everyone hated on them. None of the movies were perfect, but they were damn good movies. It broke my damn heart when I saw Episode 7. I never saw another Star Wars movie in theaters after that. The only one I bothered to see was Rogue One, and it, IMHO, was not as good as people hyped it up to be.
The Prequels were terrible movies that were executed badly. I honesty enjoy the Sequels more then the prequels I don’t love everything of the Sequels but I can’t call them bad movies.
I’m glad Disney got Star Wars so that fans can finally start to appreciate Lucas and realize they were wrong to treat him the way they did after the prequels
George is certainly flawed as an artist but there's a lot of good will and effort put into what he makes and he cares dearly about Star Wars. I'm disgusted at the way some of the fans treated him.
The Dumb ass creator Sold Star wars to a well known & Hated company. just because someone is a Fan doesn't mean they can't or shouldn't get Mad when someone F things up.
@@MrYFM2 Yeahhhh all the people hating on the new movies are just a reincarnation of the people who hated the prequels. Why cant people just enjoy something.
@@calenhoover1124 They are a completely different set of circumstances that warrant a different type of criticism. But if you're wondering why people ca't "just enjoy things", it's because there's very little to enjoy. Not many people want to be forced to endure garbage. It's also very personal to some people because they've supported this franchise for decades. It's time people realise that Star Wars has problems. The prequels made some seriously bizarre decisions that people rightly criticised them for. These new movies are similar in that regard, but somehow managed to do it worse.
@@calenhoover1124 I like every single Star Wars made by Lucas, even with their flaws. The story and characters were always great. Disney movies are just cash grab fanfic.
2:45 There is the big difference I see with Disney and George Lucas. Disney wants to appeal and satisfy the fans, while George wants to satisfy himself with HIS story and HIS idea and HIS decires to see where the characters go next. And I respect him.
If they wanted to appease fans they did a piss poor job at it. Which star wars fan wanted for luke to run away and hide and then die? He had so much potential....

@@elrohir0 True fans appreciated the saga (1-6) for the story that it was. The saga was about the rise, fall, and redemption of Anakin Skywalker. It wasn't about Luke. It wasn't about Leia. It was about Anakin and yeah, the acting could've been better at points, it wasn't so bad that you couldn't pay attention and the effects and story were amazing. I hate all the human garbage that whined, harassed, and threatened Lucas because of the prequels.
George wanted to make a movie to tell his story. Disney wanted to make a movie for the fans. You never impress people by trying to please them. Disney does not understand that.
Just where he said "They want to do something retro... I hate that, I want to do something new and new planets and new story" It makes me really wish we had that!! Such a shame.
Wyatt L He wanted there to be certain moments that echo with the other films of original trilogy. He said it’s like poetry and it’ll rhyme. He didn’t want it to be similar as the OT.
We got something new with the Prequels. Fans were like “wtf is this shit go back to the OT!!!” So then The Force Awakens goes back to its roots and the fans are like “OMG THIS IS TOO SIMILAR!” So then The Last Jedi changes a lot of stuff and fans were like “OMG THIS IS SO DIFFERENT! IT KILLED STAR WARS!!!!!” Ultimately, you guys are to blame for what happened to Star Wars. I enjoy all of em, but all y’all out there are who’re at fault.
This is actually heartbreaking. It's obvious that this man knew where he wanted to go with the franchise. But in the end it wasn't his creation. I have never seen a movie franchise get taken from the creator from the fans.
Morpheus well they bought it under the false pretense that they’d use his ideas. Part of the reason Disney bought the franchise was because Lucas made an outline for more films and that was what really made them want to buy the company. Iger said as such in his book and also added that he seemed to mislead him that they were always going to use his stories since they bought the franchise, when they didn’t exactly plan to do so nor were they contactually obligated to do so.
Heartbreaking? Are you stupid? There are 14 million Americans who are food insecure and can't afford healthcare. There are tens of thousands of homeless in LA alone. George Lucas is a fat spoiled billionaire worth 6 billion and he can't believe that the public have paid him that much for his overrated series. Heartbreaking is that society allows this inequality.
Jack Green you don’t have to be such a bitch about your opinions. As soon as you become an asshole when you disagree with someone your opinions are invalid
George has his flaws, and it seemed like he realized that. But he had a vision, a vision that created Star Wars. He gave us a wonderful universe full of stories, and we all attacked him for the bad ones. All George wanted was to tell the greatest story he could, but Disney wanted money. George deserves so much better, and if he ever gets a chance to make another, we should give him it. After all, he’s the one who started this all.
I'll give George this: even if I don't like a movie he's made, I know what he was trying to go for. It proves he is talented because with a bad director you have no clue why they make certain decisions.
George gave them an outline to follow for this sequel trilogy. Lucasfilm, Igor, Kennedy and JJ thought they could make better Star Wars than the guy that created it. And look at what we got... 💩
Raymundo Toledo if somebody decided to make sequels to Lord Of The Rings or the Bible that changed the lore and stories that came before it, it would degrade that epic tale and cheapen it's worth. If Disney/Lucasfilm wants to make generic frivolous sci-fi movies they can go right ahead, but instead they banked on the Star Wars mythos to draw in the fanbase for MY easy buck. They slapped together a discombobulated disjointed story and tried to pass it off as the continuation of its predecessors (6 movies, countless novels/comics and a 5 season animated series). They demeaned the story and do not care about it.
We blame him for one ridiculous character and now Disney give us an entire failed trilogy with other miserable totally forgetful side stories. Thanks fans
@@raymundotoledo4175 That's why merch sales keep on dropping huh? Star Wars toys was in the top 10 returned gifts in 2018. Hasbro has massive beef with Disney because the stocks are plummeting. Solo was a box office flop. Lots of money my ass.
I don't see where you guys are getting propaganda from. Having a diverse cast isn't propaganda, its just having a cast of people you would be more likely to see in an actual resistance. Not everyone is a straight, white male. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but maybe if you get out of your house for a while you will see that people are pretty diverse.
@@flesruoYkcuFoGuoY that has nothing to do with it. It's not about diversity, the original star wars had a diverse cast as well. Even the prequels had a diverse cast. The difference is, character development was present. Lando calrissian, mace windu, padme, the clones, jango fett, etc etc. These characters were diverse, but they actually had a good character arc. They all had to prove themselves. These characters have NO character arc, they are Mary Sue's and Harry Sue's. They've never encountered real hardships or difficulties. It's just Disney. Disney didnt build up enough of a character development for any of them.
@@jjs6568 I'm sorry, but Rey never had to face hardship? Living as alone as an orphan after being abandoned by her parents? Fighting and fending for herself her whole life? She's as much of a Mary Sue as Luke was, coming from someone who knows the original is MUCH better than these.
Respect to him for doing his own thing and spending time with his family. The world would be a worse place without Star Wars thank you George. Sadly Disney will never show it the same love and care that he did. Even if people are mixed about the prequels
If you look at Star Wars story telling.. you will not criticize the prequels. As George said.. it is just a opera, a space opera. Beautifully told and wonderfully executed. It was an artist showing his art to the world. I love how he said "it's not about space ships" because he was right. What good can space ships, the force, duels, visuals do if you don't have a good story to back it up? Disney's Star Wars just proved Lucas was right.
@@Ciridan Yes I did, but my opinion still remains the same today when I re-watch it. I'm not a big fan of everything in those movies, like when Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are stuck on Tatooine or the romance between Anakin and Padme. But the rest is just absolutely satisfying in my opinion. And even if I'm not a kid anymore, I'm not ashamed to say that I love the prequel as much as I did for the original trilogy
@@barbuck1272 Clone War is absolutely better than the first Star Wars film. And the Return of the Jedi is not that good of a film. When it comes to world building, and the foundation of the lore and world, the prequels absolutely destroy the original trilogy in every way. How the heck do you JUST like the original triliogy when it's empty as hell? The sequels are soo bad because they took too much inspiration from the original trilogy instead of expanding the world that was the sequel and taken the events of the original trilogy as context. @@lusotuber Lucas also had a lot of respect for all the other writers, artists, game developers etc. who worked to create the expanded Star Wars universe - 'a treasure trove of ideas' as he referred to it in one interview. So sad for Lucas and Star Wars fans to be treated so dishonestly by Igor & Kennedy.
Fabian Rocha I mean, if I am George Lucas, I will cry so hard!!! Star Wars are his life legends! If I am George Lucas, I will never have sold them to Disney! Is like putting his whole life in the trash can 🗑
Lucas was a one of a kind film maker. You'll never see an independent, creating this type of cinema on such a scale, ever again. Now, all of these huge IP's are owned by the studios and the shareholders and are pumping out cookie-cutter crap. If Lucas hadn't come under such harsh criticism for the prequels, he may have kept going and we would have gotten to see his vision for the sequel trilogy. Thanks to all the armchair critics and RLM types, we ended up with a steaming pile of corporate dog turd. All i wanted, was to be able to see Lucas finish HIS story, the way HE intended, ever since reading about his plans in a 1983 copy of TIME Magazine.
Blaming “armchair critics and RLM” for Lucas selling Star Wars and the sequel trilogy is ridiculously unselfaware-like, you’re just replacing one scapegoat (Lucas) with another, instead of placing the actual blame where it belongs: on Disney’s colossal mismanagement. But you are right about Lucas being one of a kind-he was the last of the great independent directors of the ‘70s, before the studios took over IPs and streamlined the whole industry. Yet Lucas (thanks to his success of Star Wars) was able to survive that seismic shift, something that even at their worst made the prequels unique and thought-proving.
I grew up with the original trilogy as a kid and it made my childhood magical. I was so sad when i found out George was selling to Disney. I knew they would destroy it. I also enjoy the prequel movies. I love ROTS.
At least George wasn't afraid of trying something risky, too many artists are narrow and restricted in their storytelling views today, they're to scared to try something different and are contempt with playing it safe. Kudos to George for going outside the norm, even though it might not have been the best it definitely wasn't the same.
Y’all are Hippocrates. People didn’t like force awakens because it was to similar to a new hope. So then the next movie is a brand new take on the franchise and y’all hate it because it is too out of the ordinary.
Damnnn Daniel I don’t think so. He has expressed this multiple times that his kids are his priorities. And he said that Star Wars would take too much time and he wouldn’t be able to be around his kid as much. That’s a little simplified.
This really puts it together. Disney wanted to make Star Wars for "the fans" aka a nostalgia money grab for the OT fans. Meanwhile Lucas wanted to continue his story, tell more about the journey of a family and a post war torn world.
Lucas makes it pretty clear....he wanted to make it all about family (not some unknown super power new character) and he wanted to make new things...not the same story just recycled...thats why i dont consider this Sequel Trilogy to be part of the canon of star wars.
Noise Marine George wasn’t active in the EU. He didn’t even consider it his Star Wars. I think Pablo Hidalgo has said that he even had to explain George who Jaina and Jacen were.
Yes. GL has a great imagination, he's a true visionary. He knew how to create a setting and make it come alive, make it immersive. He knew how to show the complexity and intricacy of the setting. None of Disney's stupid crap that they have the gall to call "Star Wars" has any world-building whatsoever. It's bland, boring, decrepit, and looks and feels absolutely nothing like the SW universe. It's extremely limited and small and it looks like shit made by people who neither know anything about SW nor do they know or care how to depict the setting. I can ignore bad writing and characterization, but I can't overlook or ignore it when they don't even have the basics right. Disney doesn't even have the basics down and nothing they shit out remotely resembles SW, it's downright appalling. On top of that, the writing is terrible and the characters are cardboard cutouts, and you have no redeeming qualities. None of the six GL movies was perfect, but it was easy to ignore bad writing because he did such a great job of making it feel like what it is and what it's supposed to be...a completely different world with its own complexity and amazing visual settings that make you feel that it's a lived-in setting and you can imagine being there. There are parts where the writing is bad, but it's not the whole thing, and overall it's still a pretty good and intriguing story. Another example is Bioware's SWTOR, which is full of bad writing and dialogue but they have the world-building and setting on point, so I still enjoyed playing the game. I would say the best ever SW are the KOTOR games and some of the comics/novels. They are the perfect combo of great world-building/depiction and understanding of setting + very good writing.
That sums it up perfectly. A lot of other creators are able to take the material he’s crafted and made genuinely amazing individual stories. He’s one of the best world builders out there, if only he was more of a team player.
@@mattj4112 Exactly, up until Disney, every single writer and book, comic, game or any sort of media (no matter how bad or good it is) expanding on SW universe has had an immense respect for the lore, the way the force works, the setting, the worldbuilding, etc. This is why it all had the SW look and feel. That's why you can find something to like and enjoy about all of it no matter if some aspects have bad writing. Disney however, not only has no respect for any of it, but totally massacres it, butchers it, shits on it, then flushes it down the toilet. This is why it's a huge mistake what GL did in trusting them and selling them the franchise. He killed the franchise the day he closed that sale.
Yeah, he has a tendency (which is blazingly obvious in the prequel films) to have to explain emotions that should be subtle through awkward dialogue. The romance between Padme and Anakin almost never felt sweet or genuine, thanks to dialogue, even though he had great actors filling the roles. He needs someone else to edit his grand ideas, but the ideas and themes are there. I wish we could know what his outline for the next trilogy was. Maybe one day.
Lucas is a human being, flawed and makes mistakes. But his stories were more honest than anything Disney could come up with, and Igor, Kennedy, and all the other aristocrats aren’t half the human beings that he is.
@Joey Pastrana he worked for all that money, if you spent over 20 years of your life working on films that millions will enjoy, not for the money, but because it's your passion, dont you think you should be rewarded. It's like studying 3 days without sleeping for a test but despite that you fail
@Alejandro Feo Cecin I know, the biggest plot twist I can think of in the prequels is that: 1) Anakin’s look before Vader 2) Obi-Wan Kenobi’s badassery and beard.
He deserves a lot of respect as a filmmaker, as a innovator & as a person. I admired how determined he was to make the first Star Wars movie and to secure the rights for the trilogy when he wasn’t even done with the first one. He had to fight the system to get the resources for the first movie which he had no idea how successful it turned out to be.
George wanted to make a continuation on a story about family while using new concepts like planets and spaceships, yet Disney recicled a New Hope with totally new uninteresting characters while reading things that don't deliver
And everyone praised them for it because “uwu star wars is about spaceships and…and about evil being good and good being evil…and-and stormtroopers…and empires…and yay, no more bitchy skywalker drama or laser swords!” Filoni bois missed the point of Star Wars harder than Disney: they’re just in perpetual denial about it, crafting an alternate history where their cartoon cowboy’s distortion of SW is the “real” Star Wars
Yeah Im the same way. As much as I wish Star Wars had continued on the good path and expanded in the right way. Sometimes you gotta be happy that you saw one shooting star, and cant be mad you didnt get the whole meteor shower. My Star Wars ended in 2005

Mr Lucas if your even reading this right now I just want to say I loved you work with creating the star wars I watched as a kid on vhs tapes episodes 4-6 &1-3 and I was sad when I learned you retired and sold to disney and Don't blame you I blamed the toxic fans whom disrespected the movies in the prequels that did not deserve the hate they got. The phantom menace is one of my favorite and starting point the the galaxy Far far away. May the force be with you.
@Loser 123 It does because many people hate them. The prequels were completely garbage and was just made up stories before the original. Nothing fun in there.
“I was stepping away a bit and turning things over to Kathy Kennedy” - and with that sentence we see definitively when things really started to plummet
