Hands Down!! The best of George Michael! This song was something special from George Michael...it was different, sexy, haunting and beautiful... Being a George Michael fan made it even more special.

One of the sexiest songs from the late 80's back then George Michael was on fire on Black radio and pop radio as well. I remember this song and the song "One More Try" (also from the Faith album) were on the countdown at the same time on urban radio. One More Try was number one for weeks. Black folks loved George. He crossed over to us and we loved him. It's really sad he is no longer with us.

I was 16 when this came out in 1987 and 35 years later, it's still one of my favorites!

This is probably my favorite GM song and he has so many great songs. So, I think that this video and the lyrics of this song are a little deeper than they first appear. Back when this was a monster hit and on constant rotation on MTV, we all tried to figure out what was happening in this video. Seems at first glance that she's fooling around on her boyfriend. The lyric that gives it away to me tho is "sometimes love can be mistaken for a crime." George is actually obsessed with this model. He stalks her and imagines all the scenarios they are together, but they aren't. She's just trying to live her life and be happy with her BF, but my dude is everywhere, watching her and calling her, and it's driving her crazy. That was our take back in the day, but I think they left it vague purposely. In any event it is a beautifully shot video. Definitely up there as an 80s classic.

I think this track was the first George Michael song I've ever heard, and to me his voice seemed otherworldly when I was a kid. That man, as a white guy, sang with more expression and soul than some of the black r'n'b singers. By the way: I don't think there were many dudes back then who looked cooler than George Michael driving a taxi, smoking a cigarette and wearing sunglasses at night 😎.

Definitely my second fave GM song ever (after "Freedom '90"). Just pop perfection. And I actually never realized that the video is pretty good too. Totally 80s but in a gritty way. I remember reading that this song was originally more of an uptempo song and he decided to cut the snare and some of the drums and realized it worked better as a slow jam. Genius.

Originally written and recording in a dance RnB track, he accidently removed the snare drums during the mixing of the album (before the ''Faith'' album came out) and keep it like that in the ''Faith'' album, because he loved better has a ballad, turning this song has a RnB ballad. He cited his most original sounding song of the ''Faith'' album in many interviews. This song was the third single of the ''Faith'' album. Strange thing, this song was his first single to not peaked the top 10 in his native UK, stayed at n.11, but in US, it's was the second n.1 of the album (and his sixth in general if you count the Wham years) in the Billboard Hot 100. Unlike theses two others ballads of the album (''One more Try'' and ''Kissing a Fool''), this song was very sensual. In the video, originally, the concept of the song was different, but at the end, George wanted to have a visual video who he talk and expressed the message of this song. In 2010, George Michael said in interview to this song and ''One More Try'' was his favorites songs of the ''Faith'' album and always pleasure to sing theses songs in concert since 1987 (until his death). He made a gospel version with One More Try in a 1993 concert. When he sing in concert, everyone singing all in choir the chorus of this song. For me his placement of the album was logic, because after he opening the album with the title track (Faith), this song introduces with his mature side of him who he not have with the ''Wham'' years. This song have a transition musical fund at the end to transition to''I Want Your Sex'' because ''Father' Figure'' was the second track and ''I Want Your Sex'' the third track of the album. Theses two songs paired very well, because it's talk about the same topics in theses two songs..

💃🏻❤️‍🔥🚕 You know fans were sliding off their chairs when they heard him sing “I’ll be your daddy” 😅 (especially the gays with our often difficult or distant relationships with our own fathers)… Only a taxi driver with THAT much swag and luxe styling could win her heart, but that obsessive controlling love is always doomed. Hence those dark minor chords bringing foreboding to the ending. Interesting in the video that she’s trapped between 2 father figures. She’s the model/muse torn between rough trade George and the successful photographer who can really help her career… remind you of any other video plots…? That’s right, I’m gonna do that Madonna thing again. This video is like a dark noir version of the plot of Madonna’s Borderline, but the song is sung from the POV of the obsessive man, or maybe both men, whereas Borderline is the voice of the woman refusing to be beholden to the men’s games and expectations. I’ve often thought that while MJ is the king of pop, Madonna is the queen of pop, Aretha is the queen of soul and Elvis is simply the king, George could be called the Master of Pop. He’s just so effortlessly brilliant at building a song where everything fits together like a well oiled machine. And writing, arranging, producing like a master. From funkin’ dance to jazz tinged ballads and torch songs, to blends of folk with hip hop beats. Everything is like musical velvet.

I thought I knew just about everything regarding George, but I just found out he actually directed this video. I was obsessed with this song when it came out!

I saw him perform this song on his final solo tour in 08 in San Jose, California. He was still great. It was my first and only time I saw him live. I can definitely relate to this song. I never had a father who was present, caring, nurturing, loving and guiding in my life. I'm learning to be my own father figure to my inner child that abandoned, abused and neglected. When George made a introspection about the ''Faith'' album in a 2010 interview with Mark Goodier, he talk about how he felt during the songwriting of this song. During the songwriting of this song, he was inspired by the work of Prince and when he finished to write this and recording this song, this song was like i say a upbeat track like ''I Want Your Sex'' and ''Hard Day''. But after removing the snare drums in the mix (during the mix of the album) and listen the song without the snare, he realized to this song work better has a ballad and realized also to not only it's didn't sound like influenced by the Prince work, but sound very original. He was always proud to how the song sound in the final product and how became influencal this song and sampled many times since. He cited himself ''Father Figure'' and ''One more Try'' has his favorites songs of the album.

If you interest, the journalist Matthew Horton released this week a book about the ''Faith'' era who he mets some peoples to work in the album with George and for the singles released. His engieneer talk about working about the vocals of George of this song with George. George make many takes and work very hard to make so sensual in the vocal performance in each takes until he was satisfied for the final product. Also, his manager of the time, Rob Kahane, after he hear ''Father Figure'' finish (before the album came out), wasn't sure to this song was a futher hit before it's was released in january 1988 in third single of the album because ''Father Figure'' didn't sound anything that playing in the radios at the time. But George loves so much this song and insisted Sony and his manager to released has the next single after the title-track (Faith), depist all of his crew wasn't convinced to the success of this song. Rob realized with the years to George was right about this decision and it's was a favorite for all fans in concerts who everybody sing with him the chorus. Since it's came out in single, it's was a influencal song since it's came out and was one of the four US n.1 singles of the ''Faith'' album.

I was a teenager when this came out. Looking back at it now as an adult, does it seem stalker-like to anyone else? She's never happy to see him peeking in on her. He sees her making out with someone in the back of his cab and is imagining he's the one making out with her. He's staring at the hundreds of pictures of her he's clipped from magazines he has on his wall and is now picturing her standing in front of him mostly naked. He's standing outside her window calling her then hanging up. the whole time she is super stressed the way a person who is being stalked would be. He never once said in his song that she was with him. he said he thinks they would be happy together, meaning they aren't actually together. I mean seriously, hundreds of her pictures on his wall, which is VERY stalker-like. creeping on her during a photo shoot and she's clearly freaked out to see him there. Also clearly upset to see him in the audience when she's on the catwalk. When in his imagination she slaps him, that's part of the fantasy, to convince her to want him too. There's even a part in the song where he said "sometimes love can be mistaken for a crime." Yes...stalking is a crime! LOL. he even says "I have had enough of crime," meaning he wants to move from stalking her to actually being with her. I LOVE this song, but looking back as an adult, the video is SO creepy!!
