humorous speech "Some people call you the elites; I call you my base." a good example of Michael Moore's distortions in Fahrenheit 9/11 OCTOBER 19, 2000 55th Annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner www.c-span.org/...
My thoughts exactly. He may not be the most eloquent speaker but he connected with so many with a great humor, many times self-deprecating, and affability that’s hard not to like. He seems to be very decent.
Rainier7777 so dumb he graduated with a higher gpa at Yale than John Kerry. I didn’t know Yale took students who were dumb as rocks and even let them graduate. So dumb he was a successful businessman and politician.
Search for Skull and Bones / Bush family and study the material. Your opinion on this family will change once you understand the information. There are other topics you can research related to the Bush's, but you might be put off by it and label it "conspiracy theory". There is a video where G.W. Bush accepts being part of Skull and Bones. Once you see that interview where he admits he belongs to that secret society, look for videos that explain what Skull and Bones is.
@Judith Bliss. I agree with you. I differ 100% from him politically, but with both 41 & 43 I never worried about treason. They were decent people, doing their best for the country.
@@BubbleheadOMW bro. They literally send people to die even though they knew it was a war that they shouldn't fight. If that's not treason, I don't know what is.
@@abelincon8472 If that is your defenition of treason, a few of their predecessors were also traitors, because the US have been involved in wars where they had no business interfering for as long as one can remember. Besides, what you describe is not treason according to the US constitution.
He was great!! The White House staff hated bill Clinton and his temper, but liked George w Bush as he was able to have a laugh and take the mickey out himself and treated the staff as equals.he could of been a comedian if he wasn't president.
@@S.R.Crnt. Thank you for that. I supported Bush,,,,but had no personal qualm or disdain for Gore. I never doubted his decency. Ok, so reports are the marriage didn't work out - - but I feel we're all human, and I feel those things can be compartmentalized, and those things are private with only 2 people knowing the true story. But no personal animus towards Gore and frankly he was ahead of his time on Climate concerns. Politics was always divisive, rough, personal and ugly - I admit that. But now it's just become tribal, literally tribal. I used to love politics so much, even today - I could rattle off so many statistics, trivia and tidbits about 1992, 1996, 2000,2004....but now I don't even know what channel numbers the news channels are. It's all childish, hate filled, Twitter and Social Media infested and it's a shame. But, I can still enjoy the old footage.
I am not, nor have I ever been, a supporter of Gov/Pres. Bush. However, he does have an excellent sense of humor. I remember one speech where he began something like: "I'd like to thank all of you who greeted me with all five fingers..." :)
Actual Quote:....."“I frankly felt like the reception we received on the way in from the airport was very warm and hospitable. And I want to thank the Canadian people who came out to wave -- with all five fingers -- for their hospitality.” George W. Bush
Thanks for that. I also - not a supporter of President Obama - but I have said many times - I love his personality, his calm and steadiness, his lack of drama and chaos, his sense of humor and also - his decency. I love political mud wrestling. I love defending my own side. Sure. And I've said bad things online politically. But somehow folks - we gotta get back to being "Americans". We're getting tribal. I think in another generation - 20% of us won't even speak the same language as the rest of us. And then we'll be like Sunni vs Shia , or Croat vs Serb. how can we dial it back? Anyway - thanks for your gracious comment on Bush.
@user-or6yn8pm3c what do you mean no wars under trump? He increased the drone strikes, continued Iraq and Afghanistan, signed a pro torture executive order, stacked his administration with neocons like John Bolton and Mike pompeo, assassinated Iranian general on the ground fighting isis, airstrikes in Syria and approved raid in yemen that killed a 8 year old American girl
Bush was a decent man, despite being someone who would have never been anywhere close to the Oval office if not for the family he was born into. But more than anything else, decency is what this country needs more of in its leaders right now.
You could say the same about john F Kennedy who was bought and paid for to become president by his father and was never even the governor of a large state beforehand like GW Bush.
Whatever anyone thinks of George Bush his speech, in my opinion, was so much better than either Hillary Clinton's or Donald Trump's. This is what the evening is about.
As a conservative this is bittersweet to watch. W, while not a perfect president was at least a kind person. Now the Republican Party and the conservative movement is being run by crazy people. I’m without a party. Conservatives need to get back to the Romney, Bush, Reagan type of candidates.
Its kinda ironic that on a policy basis the gop has moved left on most issues while most of these crazies claim to be diehard conservatives and call people like bush and romney a bunch of RINOs. Even more ironic when you realize that most of these crazies would have voted democrat or not voted at all only a decade or two ago.
The cameras themselves had fantastic quality, as they used film, which is of very high definition. The broadcast quality was likely lower than today, and this looks like it was taped, and tape degrades
He is my favourite president such a good Sence of humour. He wasn't perfect but he did what he thought was right for his country.the White House staff loved him as he could have laugh.
@@chrissiekeffler9494 I’m actually English but have a decent grip on politics across the pond. “Ws” critics always blame him for Iraq but Saddam didn’t comply with the weapons inspectors and never denied he had WMDS. Also all major security services believed he had WMDS and after using chemical weapons on his own people and after 9/11 and although there was only a small number of al-queda operating in Iraq they were allowed to operate in Iraq. During his drinking days I bet he was brilliant company 😂😂
it''s good to look back to when there was some semblance of civility to renew my faith in the US. how have we devolved so much so fast? it's a madness i pray ends quickly for all of us.
back when life was good and politics were boring, because everything was good. oh, little did all these people know what was on the horizon... I remember the late 90's and 2000's. 2001 was when America lost it's innocence and was the official end of the 90's and the good times. There are 2 worlds, pre 9/11 and post 9/11.
One of the greatest traditions of the american democracy (inexistent elsewhere, even though the British have a long tradition of political humor ) is these annual mundane reunions where the president is invited to deliver a humorous speech with sometimes self-deprecating remarks, often not devoid of a political message, in a relaxed atmosphere. It is something i truly admire as a non-american. Unfortunately, not all presidents are able to laugh at themselves, it takes a lot of brains and wit to be able to perform this exercise.
-- "Some people call you the elites; I call you my base." a good example of Michael Moore's distortions in Fahrenheit 9/11 Seems like a bit of artistic license there ... truthful enough, even if taken somewhat out of context.
It's just like when liberals claim that Bush wanted to be a dictator because he said "If this were a dictatorship, this would be a lot easier, as long as I'm the dictator." Again, he was joking when he said that, not making a serious comment about how much power he wanted.
I can't speak for all liberals, but I'm pretty liberal and I never said that. Bush was obviously being ironic with that statement, and the point he was making was a good one. He meant that dictatorships are awful for every single person except the dictator. I said that then. I doubt many liberals misunderstood him.
@@frankromeo3351 enough did to paint a negative narrative. It doesn’t matter if only 1 in 10 liberals believed it, thats still millions of people that can influence the zeitgeist. Im sure plenty of them were in politics and the media as well.
Really? What alternative Universe have you been living in. He was/is a neocon and a globalist. He started a war in Iraq out of vengeance and a war in Afghanistan with no exit strategy. He was a mediocre person and President.
This is how it used to be until recently - Obama, McCain and Rombey were also good at this. Last night's offering especially from Trump in contrast demonstrated a rapid descent into the gutter.
I am a Democrat & while I disagreed with many things Dubya did, he is a good person and has a sense of humor. I'd take him back way before the lying, egomaniacal, morally bankrupt, scam artist we have now.
I don’t know if the former President Bush married up or not, I just feel the former 1st Lady Laura Bush is very elegant and humble lady accompanied with kindness nature and very humble too always. Also our national treasure the former Secretary of State Rice is also very elegant and very kind and very humble too always.
Crooks, not gentlemen. They are reading scripts containing bad jokes at the expense of the poor people to which the Al Smith Dinner Memorial is supposedly dedicated. If you think these are gentlemen, then I pity your perception.
Scott McClellan: [Libby] asserted you authorized the leak of part of the NIE. W: Yeah, I did. That's what I like about W. He always has something funny to say.
One of the funniest presidents. It's a shame how badly prepared for office he was and how many awful things happened under his government - he was clearly a good-hearted person.
I love the former President Bush and his fabulous wife the former 1st Lady Laura Bush. They’re principled, honest, reasonable and funny too. I pray for a united country to lead and govern by America’s principles of Foundations and Constitution always. I also pray for Gov. Bush’s quality will be able to lead and govern together for America’s greatness to get things done quickly.
It’s not just his fault. Politics has become a venomous bloodsport. “I will see you at the Carlyle, dress is casual.”Now that was funny. Vice President Gore had an awesome line as well, “So, a Jew and a Southern Baptist walk into a room full of Catholics. Oh wait, that’s my itinerary.”
He was born in ct cus his father was like 22 and in college when he was born. By the age of like 5 his father had moved to texas and thats were he grew up until he went to college. He owns a texas baseball franchise, he was texan enough to get elected governor twice there, he has a texan accent, and his brothers, parents, and many of his niblings live there.
There was a time when character counted. How can you support the real Trump who brags: "I'm automatically attracted to beautiful [women]-I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait. (note: wait for what? Her permission? What else?) And when you're a star they let you do it. You can do anything ... Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything."
troybirch Simple. He's the lesser of 2 evils and his actual positions are in more agreement with me, than Hillary. That's all. I don't vote on personality.
Agree with you, but I support Hillary's positions. What Hillary's supporters don't get is how can an intelligent person vote for someone that says they dont "believe" in global warming (like saying you don't believe in medicine, flight, air conditioning etc.) and has proven to lie over and over. Respectfully, you do know that Trump Plead the fifth 97 times while under oath. Really trying to understand.... Thanks One more thing- you do know that by abolishing the inheritance tax as he proposes it will save his family 2 billion in taxes. You don't see that as a huge immoral conlict of interest? Thanks!
troybirch Why couldn't you just stop with your first sentence? You support Hillary. Fine. I'm not looking to debate you. Nor, did I feel the need to say anything negative about her. slander her here. You couldn't do the same. I know the issues and what I support. I'm a 40 year Reagan Republican. You're not going to get me to vote for Hillary, so save your fingertips :)
@@shirleyrombough8173 I was very fortunate to have President Bush as commander in chief while serving overseas. Kind of cheesy but it felt safe. Neither Trump nor Obama would give me much reassurance in a war zone.
Lefty 33 If Trumps roast is any indication, it will be more like the one Romney did in 2012, no self deprecating jokes. In his roast he wasn't able to laugh at himself, & changed any joke that did around so much that it wasn't funny, & they became mean.
@@TayDays1128 The Russian collusion is nonsense but Trump personally, is a rotten man. BTW, I voted for him. Who lashes at his own appointed employees, in public, like Trump does? Also his pittance and childish attitude are disgusting. Does he need to reply to everyone? He's sometimes funny, I give him that. But he can't be compared with Bush43's charisma. This guy charmed his way to Presidency, twice. This video illustrates it.
1) 1994 actually 2) To name five examples from the past three years, Larry McQuilliams in 2014, Jerad and Amanda Miller in 2014, Dylan Roof in 2015, Robert Dear in 2016 and Alexandre Bissonnette in January of this year. What was that advice you had for me? `Read a book'?
