In the tale of "Gerinaldo", love is experienced in a very dangerous life-threatening situation. The love theme addressed then, is pre-marital love relationships and their consequences, where the page does not hesitate in the dilemma of life or death: either he follows his heart, knowing that he may very well be dead the next day, or if he doesn't follow it, he may lose a great and unique love, something even more precious than his life. Upon his fate hangs the sword of Damocles (literally materialised as the "dagger of gold"). The solution of marrying the two youths caught in the act contains a permissiveness of Christian origin, since Christianity only admits the unity of body and soul on a duly established family basis and even consecrated in one sacrament.
In the Romanceiro by the Portuguese poet Almeida Garrett, he mentions that this "Gerinaldo" could be the Portuguese version of the French gallant Eginard from the time of Charlemagne. According to the original tale, Charlemagne's daughter (Emma), was visited by her lover, Einhard, on a snowy night and after she would have carried him home in her arms, thus preventing him from leaving any foot traces in the snow, that could have betrayed their clandestine love. When the Emperor, who had risen before sunrise, discovered them by chance, he was so moved by the proof of their love that he soon forgave them both, and married his secretary to his beloved princess.
Now, a curious fact about the love story between Emma and Einhard... Although Einhard is indeed a historical figure, a erudite cleric who was among the scholars that Charlemagne gathered around him, Emma, the legendary daughter of Charlemagne is, however, an made-up character, because Charlemagne never had a daughter with that name. Therefore, the love story of the two is pure fiction, one of those countless legends that the imagination of our forefathers gathered around Charlemagne and which was initially only the subject of a very tenuous story, but that ultimately grew and became quite popular during the 19th century.

No romance do "Gerinaldo", o amor é vivido numa situação perigosíssima, em risco de vida. A temática amorosa abordada então as relações amorosas pré-matrimoniais e as suas consequências, onde o pagem nem hesita no dilema da vida ou da morte: ou segue o seu coração, sabendo que pode muito bem estar morto no dia seguinte, ou se não o segue, pode perder um grande e único amor, algo ainda mais precioso do que a sua vida. Sobre o seu destino pende a espada de Dâmocles (literalmente, materializada como o "punhal d'oiro"). A solução de casar os dois jovens apanhados em flagrante encerra uma permissividade de origem cristã, pois o cristianismo só admite a unicidade de corpos e almas em base familiar devidamente estabelecida e mesmo consagrada num sacramento.
No Romanceiro do poeta português Almeida Garrett, ele refere que este "Gerinaldo" poderá ser a versão portuguesa do galante francês Eginard do tempo de Carlos Magno. Segundo o conto original, a filha de Carlos Magno (Emma), recebeu a visita do seu amante (Einhard) numa noite em que nevava e tê-lo-ia levado para casa nos seus braços, evitando assim que ele deixasse vestígios na neve que pudessem trair o seu amor clandestino. Quando o Imperador, que se tinha levantado antes do sol, e os descobriu por acaso, ficou tão comovido com a prova do seu amor que depressa os perdoou a ambos, casando o seu secretário com a sua amada princesa.
Agora, um facto curioso sobre a história de amor entre Emma e Einhard... Embora Einhard seja de facto uma figura histórica, um clérigo erudito que faz parte dos homens de letras que Carlos Magno reuniu à sua volta, Emma, a lendária filha de Carlos Magno é, contudo, uma personagem inventada, pois Carlos Magno nunca teve uma filha com essa nome. Portanto, a história do amor dos dois é pura ficção, uma dessas inúmeras lendas que a imaginação dos nossos antepassados reuniu à volta de Carlos Magno e que, inicialmente, era apenas objeto de uma história muito ténue, mas que acabou por crescer e tornar-se bastante popular durante o século XIX.
