"Shocked that you have Autobahn police". And we're shocked that you have a Highway Patrol. What?
@PradeepChandran_RPC

Autobahnpolizei is a division of the larger state police in Germany whereas in many US states, the whole state police is called Highway Patrol. In addition, there are police forces for each county and city as well. In Germany, most of the cities do not have their own police force, I mean ones with full police powers. I don't think any other country has so many different police agencies as USA, even accounting for the size difference.

I'm 44 and I only have two bad expiriences with police here in Germany. One was with a Policeman that was an asshole and his colleages had to calm him down....and one was with two police women...that stoped me while on a bike and allmost constructed a "me too" out of the stop because I lost balance towards one .... I had countless runins with the police, all nice and professional. Just these two were weird. The "Asshole" guy is still patroling my city... lol...I think he has anger issues...as he has all those accupuncture pressure points in his ear pierced and is pretty overwheigt... last time I saw his red glowing angry face beeing mad towards a cyclist in a pedestrian area...lol Most policemen will even help you get home or to a taxi if they see you walking around way too drunk where there is traffic late at night. At some point they consider you a "helpless person" so they act. One might not appreciate everytime that happens , but it's allways for your own good. It's important to know that the regular police(Landespolizei) is very well educated. While the Federal Police (trains, trainstations, borders, ports, airports, embassies, footballgames, protests, GSG9, Autobahn at the border) is mostly ex-militarry and people that left school after 10 class...They have more of a workingclass/army approach to policing, they even had tanks at least till 1990, or maybe even still have...I'm not sure. They are trained like the Gendarmery in France. While regular police(Landespolizei) has to actually study law at the university, just much less courses than a lawyer but they are still taught the same courses. You have to be sports and academically inclined to join the regular police, it's not easy to graduate.

Don't forget that it takes generally 3 years of studying in Europe to become a police officer and usually longer if one wants to spealise in traffic police, water police, etc. Besides that, the psychological examination is tough and not that many applicants do pass those tests. Here in The Netherlands just one out of each thirteen applicants gets hired.
@matejbosela9093

Same goes for "non-patrol" officers, like crime scene investigators and experts. Usually, one needs to go through basic/general officer course which takes usually 9-15 months, then specialization courses that take about 2-3 years. Then on top of that, You will need to be recognized by national authority as an expert with certification, which takes up to 5 years (this can be done simultaneously with officer training, and is usually encouraged). TLDR: You will become a bachelor in Law while training as officer. If you want to be someone specialized, thats another course and for expert, Master degree is a prerequisite + more testing.
@darthmalgus232
@darthmalgus232 5 месяцев назад
I wish it was like that here in the US. Especially the psychological testing. Some cops get their badge and get big egos, and then proceed to illegally do things when they arrest someone. They won’t get punished though because of qualified immunity. They’ll get suspended with pay, which is like a free vacation, for a certain amount of time until what they did blows over, and then they’ll be back working at the same police force, or a different one. Now that’s not to say that there aren’t good cops in the US, there are, and there are a lot of them (our media really only highlights the bad ones, or the ones they think are bad due to politics), but you never know which one (good cop or bad cop) you’re going to get when you get pulled over.

Removing the debris is important, either the police, the highway services or the fire department (if there was an accident they were involved in) will take care of removing it. Keep in mind there may be people traveling at 200 kph or more - at that speed, not only is debris a serious hazard for someone driving over it, even if they are not damaged or crash, they may fling it at someone else while driving over it. For the same reason, objects on the road are often also reported in radio traffic advisories until they have been removed, so that people adjust speed and keep an eye out.

There are speed limits on german autobahn depending on situations, road condition, turns and such. Once i was going about 200kph and a speed limit came. I tried to brake but i had another car too close behind me, so i just removed my foot from the gas and went to the middle lane when there was no cars anymore. Suddenly a car pulled in front of me with the blinking sign "follow me" in the back - in german of course. Police work in Germany and the US cannot be compared. In Germany, you should ideally have a high school diploma and training to become a police officer takes at least 3 years. In the US, any Moron can become a cop after a few months of training (they still don't know the laws or constitution, or don't care) and kill, bully and harass citizens. I have full confidence in our German police. When you see in some videos like in the US 10 or more cops arresting a shoplifter, it's just ridiculous. This sort of thing is handled by a patrol crew of two cops.

6:50 the "NO alcohol" rule is NOT ONLY age related, but related how long you have your drivers license. While technicly most get their DL with 18 then this would mean no alcohol till 21 when driving. But if you get your DL for example with 25 then it would be till 27.

yes, you have a trialing period of 3 years. any major infraction would make you go to the idiot test and start the trialing time over. also the 0.5 alcohol level is the absolute maximum, any alcohol level is too much if you are showing signs in traffic. field sobriety tests á la walking on the line isn't something that really happens in Germany. To avoid a misunderstanding, when she said special police force, she meant a special department of state police. While there are police in Germany on federal, state, and town levels, the state police handle everything people usually imagine when thinking about police work. Federal police handle the border, airports, trains and train stations, federal buildings and criminal investigations for crimes that are not local to one state. Town and city police handle parking and public order (non-criminal).

What nobody talks about is there is actually a target speed (recommended speed) of 130 km/h for the autobahn and if you go over it significantly you need to make sure that you are not doing it recklessly. there are many incidences where people were arrested and prosecution was stopped, because they made sure to drive at a time when the way was free and and extra low traffic was occuring.

We also have "hidden" police on the Autobahn. Police in "civilian" vehicels not marked as police cars but equiped with mobile speed radar and video camera. In addition to that, they will also measure the distance between vehicles and stop you, if you don't keep safe distances to other vehicles. There are minimal distances you have to keep to allow you to not crash into the vehicle in front of you, if that is forced to make an emergency braking. That distance is calculated according to the speed you are driving. As a rule of thumb you can just take your speed in kph and divide that by 2, and get the minimum distance in meters. E.g. if you drive 100kph you have to keep 50meters distance to the vehicle in front of you, if you drive 150 you need 75 meters. Also trucks have to keep a minimum distance of 50 meters IIRC, regardless of their speed.

That's because it's in promille (translates to 220 microgram of alcohol per liter of exhaled air), a value almost everyone knows or should know: roadside breathalyzer devices do not give a super-accurate reading of the amount of alcohol in your system most of the time and (in The Netherlands at least) always require a follow-up at the station, where 2 samples of breath are taken on a more elaborate machine where (I think) the lowest reading will be the one used in your prosecution. During very large roadside tests (usually along the motorway when 100% checks are performed), this machine is usually present at the site and thus not require you to go to a police station. Roadside breathalysers in The Netherlands as far as I know do not show a value in promilles, but only an 'A' (=Aangehouden > Arrested) or 'P' (Passeren > Pass). Usually, when you didn't consume alcohol and you get a roadside breathalyser test performed, the device will beep the OK signal in seconds after providing a sample of breath. Thus it usually is a bad sign when the test-device starts to take its time to show a result.

Cops will sometimes use a laser gun to measure stretches of straight roads. For example, leaving the Autobahn at Burgau and driving towards Mindelheim, you will drive around a long left corner and follow a very straight road to a roundabout. That stretch is often measured, and bikers love to speed on it. As soon as they come around the corner, they are readable on the radar, and at the roundabout a cop will pull them from traffic, leading to a citation. On the Autobahn itself they have cameras and sometimes drones to do this job. The Rettungsgasse sadly only works when everybody helps to make it work. It is very common for awful people to take advantage and use the alley, or follow the emergency vehicles. This will result in a fine of over 200 €s, 2 points in Flensburg and in special cases, 1 month of driving prohibition.

The reason why the POs were cool is because they're trained and professional. Most US POs have done a 10 week course and know nothing about professionalism most of the time.

The reason they're so strict with truck drivers is that from a truck driver's perspective all the want to do is drive as much as possible, but that's not safe. So it is very regulated. That way drivers don't have to justify stops along the way to both customer and employer. Everyone knows that they have to. Germany has huge amounts of freight passing through it and also its own import/export and its own transport. Both because of the geography of Europe and because they're responsible for a lot of trade on their own. It makes sense for them to have thorough protocols to deal with it.

Hello, I think the German police have developed a good system that protects against corruption or criminal acts within the police force. Unlike in the USA, for example, there are actually only service groups in the police everywhere. These are several police officers who then form patrol car crews in pairs. In Germany, there is no such thing as a permanent patrol partner, as is often seen in American films and series, with whom you work together on a daily basis. This fact alone minimizes the risk of a police officer possibly going off the rails, as they are always working with different colleagues. They not only ensure each other's safety, but also see and assess each other's actions and measures. Misconduct would quickly become apparent and would certainly not be tolerated. But this also serves to protect the individual officers, as misconduct can be punished more easily and quickly by the police counterpart during checks.

@JanBebendorf
@JanBebendorf 4 месяца назад
To clear up some things: 1. We do have a lot of speed limits on our highways for several reasons (noise protection, dangerous curves/entries/exits and last but not least bored planning officials that just have fun putting up signs on our streets for no reason) it's just that we don't have a general limit so there are parts where you are expected to drive 130 km/h but there is no hard limit and you can theoretically go as fast as you can as long as you drive in a safe manner. And even if there is no limit most of the time you got stupid idiots pulling to the left lane with 100 km/h or even less not even looking in their mirror so most of the time you can't really drive that fast anyway or if you do you constantly need to brake so you waste a lot of gas and cause unnecessary polution. 2. We don't have a dedicated police force for the highway that's just outright wrong. The state police is doing the job but indeed there are some dedicated teams that focus on highway patrol. Besides the police we also got the BALM (formerly BAG) which is the authority responsible for logistics and they also do controls but only on truck drivers (cargo security, driving and resting periods, speeding, etc.). And in border areas we also got federal police and customs involved who are performing spot-check border controls (smuggling, illegal immigration, ...). 3. We don't have officers sitting at the side of the street because traffic is flowing so fast that it would be really dangerous to interrupt the traffic. Instead we have stationary and temporary radar control combined with undercover cops on the road using a system called "ProViDa" which is using on-board high speed cameras that measure the distance to the car in front and combine it with the speedometer of the police car to calculate the speed. 4. We don't have dedicated pull-over sections at the side of the highway, those are just regular rest areas that are being used by the police for inspection measures. Police just splits up in two teams where one team is pulling over cars redirecting them to the parking spot while another team is waiting to do the actual inspection. Also police doens't need any reason to pull somebody over not even suspicion, they just do routine controls and they do that especially in border areas since all our borders are open and there is no stationary border control anymore. 5. It's not like we don't have any bad cops out here and I know a case from friends where police was trying to completely make up a high speed chase (most likely to receive promotion) and luckily the judge was able to quickly identify and completely destroy the lies of the 2 cops. But it's probably much harder to become a police officer in germany in the first place (you need to pass multiple entrance tests and do 3 years of training to become a regular officer and you even need to study to get into higher positions) and we always have teams of at least 2 officers and you need to write paperwork for every of your actions so abuse of power or corruption is much harder to hide and much less common.

Police in Germany are often deescalating situations. Just be respectful and they will be correct too, though you will still get a sentence if you do a crime. If it is just a minor thing like exceeding the speed limit a bit (say 5mph) they also are allowed to give you just a warning.

And rules that are ignored my police in the US, like crusing in the passing lane when not passing, are strictly enforced on the autobahn, precisely because of the high speeds and danger of slow moving traffic in the passing lane. European Countries’ police forces usually never go out alone. Patrols are always composed of two individuals. Policing alone is considered very dangerous both for the policeman and for the public, because it limits the options available to the policeman: imagine stopping a car with more than one person on board who are not compliant, the policeman might be forced to resort to deadly force just because he/she is about to be overwhelmed.

The Autobahn Police is very close to the American State Troopers. They do traffic enforcement, crashes and more.

Drink driving seems to be a laughing matter in the US. It is not in the UK and Europe.

You can always refuse a Urin test on the roadside but that basically guarantees that you spend the rest of the day on the police station getting tested there wich is a lot more effort than simply doing it then and there. You can also demand a blood test. It’s a open secret that normally they will only test your Urin for one substance (I think for budget reasons). So if you’re high but manage to convince them you drank instead or the other way around, you might get lucky… I‘m not sure how it’s going to change now that weed is legal since testing for the stuff doesn’t have a reliable system like alcohol.

I literally just watched 2 videos where American cops drove at excess speed in built up areas, one travelling at 130mph & t-boned a car killing a 14 month old baby & one who killed a pedestrian on a crosswalk. Non of them to emergencies.

The driver has the choice to either do a voluntary urine test right at the spot or get a blood sample taken by a doctor at the police station. That option is not voluntary any more.
