I spent 9 years in Germany up til 2000 with the British army, and married a local. Her Grandad was a disabled man called Erich, a lovely, kind and humble gentleman. He served with the wermacht in Normandy and told me his story, how he was shot in the face by a British patrol whilst in retreat from the coast. A round hit him in the cheek bone which obliterated his jaw and left a gaping hole in the rear of his skull. Despite this, he marched on foot with his platoon all the way back to the German lines over 100 miles, where he found a doctor to treat him. The doctor asked what the problem was, and Erich told him of his injury. The doctor said, well if that's true "where's the bullet then"? Erich felt the back of his bandages and amazingly, it fell out into his palm. By the time I met Erich he had been the local church organist for over 50 years, and was extremely religious. We used to visit him and his wife for coffee and cake, exchange stories and they were just lovely people. Erich used to have to hold his face while he ate, as he had very little jaw bone in his face and there was a danger he could choke on his food. He got tired quickly and suffered immense headaches regularly, so needed to lie down. Despite the sadness of his experiences at war and his disability due to his injuries he would regularly catch the tram into town to go shopping. On one such occasion he was pick pocketed and had his wallet stolen containing all his money and the bullet that he had saved and kept with him all those years. Erich had served in the Deutsche Wermacht, not because of any beliefs, but because he had to, and only had God and his family in his heart. We see these people portrayed still to this day nearly 80 years on as the enemy and as the "baddies" however, Some of those who refused to do their bit were murdered, and many of those who did were just like Erich. Interesting little film
@Truth Seeker I guess you missed the part where the ones who refused were killed. Ill bet you also dont realize that the NAZIs filled many of their ranks with polish and other captured prisoners of war including koreans. I guess they were all nazi pigs too.. your public education is showing through
If I had been German, I would have fought for Germany. Had I been a Russian, I would have fought for Russia. Had I been an American... geography is destiny.
My uncle (a paratrooper) was killed in Crete during that invasion - I watched in its entirety a few years ago - This is a brilliant point in the mini-series, where the brothers actually exchange places - the studious pacifistic brother replaces the family Hero - the combat footage is top notch, along with the dialog and emotive tone - not many war films can claim this level of authenticity and pathos
I recently read about Crete and what a horrific waste of life it was. Young boys in their prime, landing on enemy positions, only to be disembowled by bayonets as they fought to get their harnesses off. Then when the tide turned, confused allies caught in crossfires and aerial bombardments, or being led by generals too inept to read a map. WW1 and WW2 were truly criminal in all that blood they squandered
John Ford was a movie director who served as head of photographic unit for the office of strategic services and made documentaries for the navy department. he filmed the Japanese attack on midway ( was wounded in the arm). He was on Omaha Beach for filming D Day too. Very little footage was released to the public because the us government was afraid to show so many casualties on the screen. according to wikipedia his film of D day was lost over the years. but you can find his film of the attack of midway. pretty badass cameraman
@Tony Steinberg I know what you`re saying But dude, (only if you know where to explore in internet) not all the information about history or military in internet is true
My grandfather's brother reached Berlin and went missing. In 1993, we received a registered letter from a certain Ada Schneitz in Russian to the old address of my grandfather in a village in the Altai, in which none of our relatives, the Usoltsevs, had lived for a long time, but it was lucky that the director of the school had a connection with the military registration and enlistment office and the letter was delivered to US. turns out to be grandfather's brother Alexei Usoltsev and lives in Canada. Berlin has indeed been awarded the Order of the Red Star. but during the year of his stay in Germany, he fell in love with a German woman, Elda Weimer, and having read that the duty to the Motherland completely fulfilled the difficult decision to stay with Elda. Together they emigrated to Switzerland and to the USA and Canada. Aleksey Usoltsev lived under the name Alex Vaimer until the age of 87, worked as a mechanic on a ship, bought a house from him 2 daughters Ada Schneitz, they never met with my grandfather Semyon Usoltsev (also a veteran of the BVO). In 1998, Alex Weimer came to visit Russia. At that time he was 80, but he was a peppy and fit old man, who spoke Russian perfectly, told an amazing story of his life, how he traveled almost the whole world. how much he missed and worried about his relatives, how once he met in the port in a Russian ship, having heard his native speech, he almost gave up everything and wanted to return, but he already had a family, and it is vaguely revealed how he will be met. The war took a lot from him, but it was not accidental either. How could he think as a kid, living in a remote village, that someday he would visit almost all the capitals of the world. In 2005, he was gone.
@@taylorahern3755 The Russians barely won the war in Russia, nevermind the entire world war 2. It only took the Russians 4 years to go the same distance you can drive in less than a day.
Like it was said in Band of Brothers, "The sooner you accept the fact that you are already dead is when you'll start functioning how a soldier is supposed to.." or something across those lines, I'm paraphrasing but the point still stands.
My uncle was a WWII bombardier. Right after he lifted his head from the scope (looking for their target), flack tore through his sighting system, barely missing his head. He lived a long life in Sacramento California.
I love how the German soldiers are humanised unlike so many other movies where they are just mindless evil villains all the time. This movie treats them as who they really were - humans with real thoughts and feelings.
You people don't write nonsense. Those in the Wehrmacht were the same war criminals who murdered children, women and the elderly. The Germans murdered infants in their extermination camps. Today they are trying to make themselves victims of World War II, which is completely untrue.
Great Grandfather was into motorcycles long before the war, he was with the 1st Hassars Tank Battalion i believe, some point in the convoy there was a little skirmish and a German motorcycle was left abandoned by a motorized scout unit, he ended up dismounting the tank during rearming and regrouping and took it for a spin. giving officers a ride to the front and back of the columns. At some point the columns got the order to press forward and they started rolling out, there was a break in the road, one leading to a FOB in a town. and one path lead right through no mans land straight toward the German front lines. Whilst he was goofing off, he managed to lose sight of the convoy and ended up rolling down the road to the German lines, thankfully, the motorcycle ended up running out of fuel and oil due to a few well placed bullet holes in the tanks. Having better judged his surroundings and his current route he ended up turning around and walking back to the fork where a few angry officers and friends were waiting for him. He was the only man I'm aware of that was in no mans land before any big assault. all the while hooning around on a German motorcycle. Whether or not everything said is true, its broken telephone from the man himself.
you would not have such a feeling if 6 out of 10 of your relatives were killed by the nazis (someone was tortured in a concentration camp and burned in a furnace, someone was boiled soap and gloves were made from leather, someone was simply hanged and burned alive)
Being German I would assume a lot of German actors wouldn’t like doing World War II stuff because it’s a little embarrassing history wise especially if The movie portrays the Germans losing but that is just a thought
@@fishingwitheddie1535 It's understandable but the best war films I've seen are mostly German. Best war films made in USA are from Vietnam war. And what do they have in common? They both portray war from the losing side..
My Lamprecht family came to East Prussia in the 17th century as settlers from Switzerland and the Palatinate. In the 19th century, one of them settled on the lands of the Russian Empire and Lamprecht lived happily there. In 1920, Poland came to these lands and Lamprecht became a Pole. He defended Poland in the Polish-Soviet War. He received the highest awards. During WW2, the Russians took him to Siberia to work. My father was born there. Lamprecht, taken into the Polish army, crossed the entire front and captured Berlin. There, 1945 met German POWs for registration. One of them was Lamprecht. They stared into each other's eyes for a long time. They each went their own way. Today I live in Warsaw, Poland.
Friedhelm was really tragic character in this series. First he was almost pacifist looking at war horrors happening, later he got slowly changed and didnt care much about anything anymore.

Both my father and grandfather fought in WWII., on the German side. My grandpa blew off his hand, fighting the Russian. My father was a volunteer. My grandpa was a draftee. . Never lump anyone into a bag. Js
In war movies in battle scenes you almost don't need to "act" :D !!! I was in war movie casting... I had to "act" that I get under surprise bombing and i have to hide myself in trench... As soon as the bomber plane sound started from loudspeakers and casting director started to scream at me "BOOMM, explosion!!!" another "BOOMM, explosion!!!" , etc,etc I was down on floor in the room corner and trying to make myself as little as possible!!!! My hands were shaking like 30 minutes after the end of casting :D !!!
Pretty much what was said , it’s the immersion of it that makes it feel like you’re really there you really are being shot at yada yada, studios and movies and directors even actors have all came a long way and it shows
@@notahuman3899 every army used some kind of drugs. Waffen ss used anfitamin or mollu little doses . Thats why they wrre so fierce and everyone was scared of them! They fought till death! They didnt care and they didnt feel anything under those drugs.
Damn, once the sergeant went down almost all of them didn't know what to do. Even the Lieutenant lmao. Thats why sometimes NCOs with combat experience outrank junior officers
From the series the leutnant was a veteran already at this point taking part in Poland, France and Barbarossa, he was more in shock with losing so many men.
Joseph Stalin you’re actually fucking pathetic. You just want to start an argument don’t you. God, it’s actually depressing how much of a bitter person you must be. This man’s FIVE YEAR OLD COMMENT was just complimenting a movie for its great production, and you had to shit all over it for absolutely no reason. Fuck off and focus on ruining you’re own day instead of everyone else’s.
Joseph Stalin damn, can’t argue with that. You’ve REALLY convinced me that I’m in the wrong here. Well, no loss for me. You’re still an asshole who just wants to shit on people for no reason, other than the fact that it makes you feel artificially powerful. And other people will see that as well. Good day.
Eh. Relatively. Grenades don't explode in massive fireballs, cars aren't bullet proof and don't make good cover at all, it's well done for a series, but still lots of cinematographic inconsistencies.
My grandfather was a soldier in the Free French forces in Italy. He didn't like talking about the war that had traumatized him. He knew the horror of fighting with fear in his stomach, terrible wounds, the stench of corpses and hand-to-hand combat where, to survive, he slaughtered Germans. When he returned home, he was never the same again. He suffered all his life from nightmares and depressions. There is nothing glamorous about war. It only brings misery.
This is a masterpiece, well acted and beautifully shot, and really quite sad.Loved the characters, the most intriguing one was the pacifist brother.Attention to detail was impressive, the German kit and uniforms were very accurate. The battle scenes were great,I think it is as good as band of brothers,if not better.
@@kobiimpraim4838 Я посмотрел все серии весь фильм от начала до конца. Все как в реальной жизни. Актеры показали зрителям реальные переживания на войне. Замечательный фильм для нашего поколения.
Man its no real footage, its modern made movie!🤣 And if so.. its not even 1940! Russian posters on walls, so its after 1941...what idiot could think that is 1940.
One of the most awesome videos I've ever seen, although I'm not a fan of one soldier rushing and tearing the defences in a moment of rage without the multiple machine guns getting a shot at him.
I believe it did happen, something straight out outrages. Look at band of brothers with ronald speirs, its not unrealistic but obviously not highly frequent. Imagine you are simply reloading behind your sandbag or what not and some german comes rushing your position. Things can go really quik when you are not watching a certain angle.
This shows how the war gets more and more brutal. In the firest episodes, we see the German soldiers risking their life to take prisoners when they were still in combat, now they just shoot the ones that try to surrender.
Los soldados alemanes eran conscientes de que a corta distancia,el kar 98 es inferior al M1 garand, por eso tenían secciónes de subfusiles y ametralladoras, para compensar el poder de fuego
more often than not close range fighting was done with a bayonet, even for the Americans. The MG42 was a pretty devastating weapon, but if it was disabled a large portion of the German squad's firepower was gone. Whereas if an American Browning Machine gun was destroyed, the squad could make up for it somewhat with fire from the BAR and M1 Garand.
@@amadeupname151 Everyone feared the German MG on the battlefield. It was a death call hearing it. When the allies heard this gun on the battlefield they instantly hit the ground and ran the opposite direction.
Damn I just realized that the lieutenant (I think he's a lieutenant) is the main character from Babylon Berlin. So he's staring in two great German TV dramas. Good for him.
I don’t mean to come as an ass or anything but the silver shoulder boards he has with the single gold diamond means Oberleutnant, so yeah your kind of correct if it’s just the silver by itself it’d be Lieutenant if it has two that’d make him a Hauptmann
I watched these trilogy in high school, back and forth ten times. (I admire you’ll act like you can understand German movies with out English subtitles😂)
@@jokersnewface5318 these werent Nazi’s, these were the Wehrmacht. Which basically means the army of Germany. Most of them were normal people that were ordered to fight and on occasion do bad things because they are obligated to follow orders by oath. During the war and even after, many german soldiers were treated as equally evil because of what the SS did and were executed for it by russians and americans. But in reality they were just young boys scared to the bone born on the wrong side of the war.
Is it just me or is it annoying to see people comment criticizing what’s realistic and what’s unrealistic, like to tell a story of course they need to take some creative liberties
You have a lot of veterans commenting here who have seen some shit. I myself have played castle wolfenstein numerous times so i can also comment on what is realistic and not.
I find it fun to discuss realism in these type of scenes because ive studied this a lot. And the fact that this is such a realistic movie makes people analize it more. If it was a over the top, hollywood style movie, no one would analize it becsuse no one expect it to be realistic
To be fair the Stalhandgranate wasn't a frag, it was a high explosive. It wouldnt've been as massive as that unless it was bundled but it's not too far off. My great granddad (British Artilleryman Dunkirk+DDay) is deaf in one ear because of the shockwave from one of em
it's because it sells way better that way. people love to see explosions. also the ending in this clip isn't realistic but it satisfies the viewers who felt bad for German squad. It's supposed to be a rollercoaster of emotions type movie and that's how they do it.
Yeah, bruh. It’s a fuckin’ movie. If you want realism, then how’s about you go fire a single .40 round with no ear protection. You will be essentially DEAF for about 30 minutes. Should a movie DEAFEN you too?
I want more stuff like this, It's so fascinating to watch the german side in comparison to the other nations because I think it highlights a Really important part of war; all war is, is old men arguing and young men dying
From what I've watched on this im assuming the guy that got hit by the rocket at the end was constantly suffering shell-shock but was looked after by his fellow men. His death threw thiwr leader into a suicidal fitness rage that made him run into enemy fire to avenge him. This move or series (im unsure) really knows how to pack a punch
WIlhelm was the brother of the guy who ran out at the end with the MP-40. The entire series follows the story of 5 teens. The brother joins the Wehrmacht when they start operation Barbarossa untill the chaotic retreat back to Germany, a jew gets deported, one girl becomes a military nurse on the eastern front and one girl stays in Berlin and becomes involved with a highranking Nazi member. They make a pact to be at the same place one year later but then the war grows and swallows them all in one way or another.
Million man armies facing each other battle after battle , never did humans ever fight such a brutal war. This was called total war, a war of destruction with no terms.
That is an incredibly difficult scenario.... Shoot, move, communicate. Don't even need subtitles to understand. They were one of the best infantries of all time regardless of broader contexts.
