American made WW2 movies frequently show German soldiers mindlessly charging gun positions as they get mow down by 50 caliber machine guns🤣, in this movie German soldiers are actually using cover and are taking out fortified positions.
German Soldiers were among the best if not the best pound for pound soldiers at that time, they were very well trained and equipped. I think you know that by your comment.
@@MudRogue Indeed. They were strongest army ever. Litterally all historians (US, GB, USSR and others) agreed that WW2 was won with USA weapons and supply, British time bought and Soviet blood. While Germany fought alone (not counting Italy who is more of baggage, pushed by Greece on very start and almost lost completely North Africa or Japan who barely had any influence beside moving away some part of USA army). Germany had to conquer Europe, fight British in Europe, fight British on North Africa, defend Italy and fight USSR, all while both GB and USSR are being supplied from USA. If Italy were any good and Yugoslavia didn't interfere with Hitler's plan on attacking USSR... or if any of GB/USA/USSR failed, we would have entirely different history. Not to mention that USA atomic bomb (project manhattan) and military expansion after WW2 are mostly German scientists and technology which was transported back to USA. There are numerous documentaries about it. (Von Braun / mission in Norway to thwart nazi atomic bomb). Germany was top notch. Of course from their view, they were fighting enemy who attacked them because they liberated German occupied teritories and they knew nothing about concentration camps (also existing documentaries on how SS managed to hide concentration camps true purpose from Red Cross and public). You can't judge German soliders from today point of view and knowledge :)
This was the first movie where I saw German soldiers fight tactically and well. Other movies always portray German soldiers as idiots, big bellies, always holding MP-40s and never aiming, of course, rarely hitting anyone. The gun is always held the same way when you hold the M134 Minigun while you have the MP-40.
Band if Brothers portrays them pretty well too. While it’s made clear that by that time, the Germans were fighting a losing battle, they’re portrayed as willing to fight tooth and nail for their homes and make it as painful as possible to gain any ground. The episodes covering Market Garden and Bastogne were brilliantly done in that regard.
"Generation War", a powerful mini-series about the damage WW2 does to a group of friends. In various ways, they lose themselves. Some die, others survive, but parts of them are long gone. The two brothers especially have spectacular character arcs each. Theirs is a cautionary tale about what it takes to make it through the adversity of inhumanity. For Friedhelm it was all about becoming nihilistic to the point of self-destruction, the war killing the best parts of him. For Wilhelm it was about regaining parts of that lost humanity, by slowly, yet decidedly detaching himself from the warmachine. 10/10, highly recommended.
The German soldier is very good, very persistent, but sometimes better :) And remember the Russian "Katyusha" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ukjb5kOPGO0.html
My German is terrible but I know the junior officer asked for two volunteers and the entire element raised their hand. You have to give it to them. This was one of the greatest infantries there ever was.
@@wasserungeheuer-918 It's funny because the younger one gets bolder and less afraid as time passes, while his sargeant brother does the opposite; he grows fearful and less skilled.
The German uniforms were beautiful, and a lot of people are pointing that out. But what's even more fascinating is that you can tell who was in the Heer longer depending on which uniform they were wearing. For example, a lot of the Wehrmacht soldiers, including Friedhelm, are wearing M40's & M42 uniforms, which means they probably enlisted/were conscripted to fight in Operation Barbarossa & the Eastern Front. Wilhelm however is wearing an M36 uniform, which means he was in the Wehrmacht years before the war even began, and probably saw action in Poland or France. Hence why he's significantly more restrained than the average trigger happy soldier, but actually sees his men beyond cannon fodder for an objective.
i love how it starts how semi serious they are getting shot at nothing to big then one guy gets hit, its grizzly, then another hit in the stomach starts screaming. The stress can be felt out of no where so well made
This is what i really love. Fully original voices. Moreover since i can understand english, spanish, italian, french (i am french btw), and some russian and arabic. This makes those films more accurate and enjoyable.
I love the chain of command scene in this video. You can see how the lieutenant gets orders from his superiors and then gives those orders to the platoon sgts and squad leaders. Extremely realistic
I like how during the scene where the Lieutenant decides what happens with the prisoners it pans to the three young Soviets on the ground having no clue what's being said looking at each other. With a clear language barrier they've probably never heard fluent German until their time in the War so it makes this scene feel even more real.
In fact, they may have heard German before because there was (and still is) a wide German community in Russia, probably settled in the country since 19th century
I love that I can understand what’s happening without understanding what they’re saying, this looks really good, definitely watching the whole movie when I find time
The lieutenant demonstrated efficient leadership skills when he disallowed his men from executing prisoners of war, even though, he suffered casualties. That is a true soldier and commander.
@@lancelotkrantz2746 On Soviet side it was mostly retaliation for treating soviet POW's poorly and executing them. I heard a story from my grandfather, whose father fought in Russia, that his battalion was completely surrounded. Part of them decided to surrender, part to stay. My granfather's dad decided to stay and with a part of his battalion try to run away, to surrender to anyone except the soviets. My grandfather said that before they left, they heard gunfire from the Soviet camp, as they were executing the part of the battalion which had surrendered.
Men were men then , if you are an infantrymen now , you fight beside weak men , and trainnies that can’t even figure out their own sex, I feel bad for you infantrymen, tech took over the need for a badass marine
@@satoTM Soviets killed their own Russian people in villages near their Western border and blamed Germans for it (like they did with the Katyn massacre too), to incite hatred in Russians against German soldiers. But they did the same since 1917. In peace time, between 1933-1939, "Nazis" killed 0 million people, while the Soviets murdered about 10 million of their own. You don't spare such people. It's a matter of course.
Германская армия всегда была образцом для подражания. В том числе и в СССР. Как бы их ни осмеивали в старых фильмах, на самом деле все знали, что это была образцовая армия.

After watching the Band of Brothers series, these scenes give me chills as I could easily imagine these as two sides of the same battle. (Of course that is not actually the case here.)

I love the German / Dutch word for volunteer - derived from "Free will" - Freiwilliger / Vrijwilliger (not sure I spelled the german one right, not so good in German)
@Overlord Nappa not all ... this is demagogy. I haven't ever heard about such cruelty made by for example Swiss, Hungarians, Poles, Danes. Besides, war crimes are something different to planed extermination whole nations. There were of course good Germans like cpt Gustav Schröder but it was an exception. Anti-Nazi movements like Weiße Rose (it counts only 20s members) was minority.
@Overlord Nappa I don't deny what you are writing. Brits are special kind of bastards and all colonial empires (England, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Japan, USA,etc) has that kind of sins. But you still aren't allowed to write that "all the nations" did that. There were nations like Poles and Greeks which even during IIWW did not something like that.

From childhood i saw many soviet war movies about brave and stark soviet soldiers. This is movie about Wermacht soldiers is first that i can see and understand other side of WW2
This is Generation War........6 friends with 6 stories to tell thrust into war . German film with English subtitles and I got it via Amazon. Outstanding piece of filmi
I like movies that show other perspectives of war, and shows the other sides not just being cannon fodder. The enemy was a clever bastard no less than we were. The backed the wrong horse, sure, but I like that the Germans are actually shown to be competent. And showing the struggles they faced; they were scared just like we were. War is brutal no matter what side you're on. It feels like any other American war movie, except change in uniform and language.
There needs to be more axis movies for historical reasons. People need to learn that tragedy involved both side. Although the axis reasons for war were not honorable it involved young people who died fighting for their county and believes.
The Wehrmacht was responsible for countless war crimes and they ultimately played a role in the final solution... it’s true there were honorable men but the main motive was extremely problematic
This is how hard war can be... not only for their fallen comrades but for the stress (both mental and physical) they have to carry... just for the power hunger of a bunch of "leaders"... glory to the fallen soldier, no matter whose flag defended.
I think not having subtitles makes it more interesting. In movies I’m so use to just seen endless German soldiers being mowed down and then always shouting ‘actung!’ “Sprengelegen!” ‘Schnell’ to the point they are stereotyped. Having no subtitles and being able to watch the acting direct the situation gives you the perspective a Russian/British person would have being captured.
I believe it is 5 - the two brothers, their Jewish friend, the nurse and the singer. It's a good story but heavily criticised in the media for its perspective.
@@davethestratman I find it strange that the commissar who tries to shoot them in the back at the end isn't played by a Jewish (looking) actor. Because 90+% of them were that. Would have been more accurate historically.
unsere Mütter unsere Väter is in german (our Mothers and Fathers) in spanish they changed the title to "Sons of the third Reich" (hijos del tercer Reich)
Wow this looks great! Can't believe I haven't seen this show before... Definitely going to give it a watch! It's a shame the German side of the war is rarely told in film.
Fascinating video and much appreciate the upload! Most of my relatives at the time was in combat in the East for the Wehrmacht during WW2. My Grandfather was in the 6th army 44th infantry division and saw action in Poland, France and Kharkov. He was later captured along with thousands of men at Stalingrad. Ultimately he lost 80 pounds of body weight moving around different Russian labour camps before finally returning home to Germany in the mid 1950s and lived a long peaceful life. His younger brother started off the war in the East as part of the 439th Regiment of the 134th Division and was at the battle of Moscow then later he was one of 9 survivors out of 1,000 men in his regiment to die in the battle of Kursk where he was injured. He survived the end of the war as part of the 512th heavy tank destroyer battalion as a loader for the Jagdtiger when he surrendered to the Americans by the end of the war in May 1945.
at the start of the war the Germans fought in the belief that they were going to win it, but when the Russians and the Allies took control of the territory they conquered and advanced towards Germany, the Germans then fought with the energy of despair
I like the detail that when the lieutenant got attacked the private kept his rifle on the Soviet soldiers because he knows if he points the rifle somewhere else 2 soldiers are going to go at him with him just having a semi automatic rifle to defend himself in time
@@koj2698 Probably me too. I'm all for respecting the laws of war but if I'm fighting a war I'm not taking prisoners while an enemy combatant is right next to me wrestling for my liutenent's gun.
@@koj2698 problem was it was a bolt action-no time to reload before other one attacks you then who knows. In this case one or the other had to die for the next. I guess neither was willing.
No matter what side, or nation, or the color of one's skin, war is never devoid of personal suffering and pain. We tend to think of our enemies as soulless husks that are just another obstacle to overcome. But in reality they are humans, made of flesh, nerves and bones like ourselves.
however those humans made of flesh, nerves and bones like ourselves are still nothing like us. those soulless husks fought so they could kill millions of innocent people. we fought so we could save those millions of people. there's a clear difference that needs to be understood.
@@cadegoebel4777 we didn’t save those millions of people they were already dead we just stopped a very few German soldiers from killing those men and women. 90% of troops had no knowledge on the war crimes and their commitments to a mass genocide
@@australium7374 They're just a socialist. They probably either have no idea of the previous atrocities their dear leaders and their cronies committed years before the Nazis even came to power, or they just don't care.
@@dms-f16 and the actor, volker bruch, totally fits perfectly in. I can also recommend the tv series Babylon Berlin, playing in Berlin in the late 20´s, early 30´s
There was a TV series in the early sixties, before I was born, called Combat! Yes, it was American, no I never saw more than a scene or two of it, not sure how 'realistic' it was. And it was in black and white, this seems far superior. But considering that Generation War WAS made in 2013, I'd be surprised if it wasn't better quality. Created by a public broadcaster ZDF, but only 3 episodes. It's mentioned it's on Netflix, but not here in Canada.
It adds a feel to just see the language barrier of the Russians vs the Germans on the battlefield. Both of them don’t know what the enemy is saying and they each need to make a move without being able to understand the enemy’s moves
I am not sure why, but the scene where one german is holding the mg crew at gunpoint, while his buddy whestles the officer in the background was a little funny to me.
My only issue is the way some German soldiers hold their MP40 by the magazine. Every weapons expert in every video of the MP40 states it should never be held by the magazine. The magazine is single stack and is not tightly held by the magazine well. Holding it may cause a misalignment which can jam the weapon. In the middle of a firefight, this can lead to disastrous results. Training manual says it should always be held by the magazine well. In fact, it is shaped to be held exactly there.
Exactly what Churchill did to the Poles when he guaranteed them protection he didn't have. That horrific war would've never occurred had he stayed out of it. Beck and Hitler were already discussing giving Danzig back to Germany. After what Poland did to ethnic Germans and then having them run to England's "protection". Poland never recovered but they brought it all on themselves.
All wars are started by the 1% and seldom are fought by them or their families....fact of life..most of us are the 1%'s cannon fodder. Imprison the 1% and put an end to wars...all wars are for profit and the 1% always survive even when their cannon fodder doesn't.

That squad leader (cuz he's holding a mp40) didn't even reload once, i know that he might've reloaded of camera but, the movie should include reloading to be a part of the movie so that the audience feel that they're with the characters in the movie.
That’s the only issue I have with this film series tbh they’re never seen reloading. For example the Friedhelm charge, he picks up an MP40 from a dead soldier, it have definitely been fired, he then proceeded to charge whilst shooting over more than 32 rounds
@red_stickman Yes, there were prototype variants, but they weren't widely produced and the regular infranty wouldn't get them, cuz the new stuff was tested by SS units first.
I was a sniper in Vietnam and in this movie, the sniper in the window stayed at his position way too long. As soon as he saw how the enemy was moving in on him, he should have gotten the hell out of there. If at all possible, there's no shame in living to fight another day.
I think it was about a 15 to 1 kill ratio between the Soviets and Germans. It's why George S. Patton said German infantry was the finest in the world. In his book 'Jackboot' author John Laffin wrote 'Germans make great soldiers because they *like* being soldiers.'
