In this video we look at the effectiveness of various camouflage patterns used by the German SS during World War II. We will be testing this Camouflage in a heavily vegetated Woodland Environment in north Texas during the late autumn / early winter season. This video will consist of numerous scenes where each will begin with a concealed stationary position (both with & without the use of vegetation), followed by a movement phase out of the initial position. The purpose of the video is to give the viewer a chance to see the individual camouflage pattern and how it looks and blends into this environment. There will be varying degrees of how much of the uniform will be exposed to the viewer. Some scenes will only expose little more than perhaps just my head, while other scenes will have virtually no vegetation covering.
For more information about some of the patterns featured in this video, please visit:

Specific to the US they chose not to go with a camo pattern similar to this in the European theater because they experienced some limited friendly fire incidents. They figured the logistics involved combined with the concern over friendly fire it was not worth it. Compared to the Pacific theater where there was no such concern with their troops being mistaken for the Japanese wearing camouflage You see especially US Marines in several different patterns later in the war.

There was a late camouflage pattern wich was planned for both Waffen SS and Wehrmacht, the 1945 Leibermuster pattern. This was designed and created by Otto Schick and his team. The Leibermuster pattern had the highest effectiveness of all german camouflage patterns. It was also effective against the upcoming night vision optical equipment. Otto Schick and the Leibermuster pattern was used in a little different version in the swiss army after 1945. It was called swiss alpentarn 1957.

I've always believed that UCP which people mistakenly call ACU is neither camouflage nor universal. It is a pattern though. ACU is the cut of the uniform. UCP = Universal Camouflage Pattern is the first patterned they used on it. Since then they have the ACU in ATACS, Multicam and Lizard plus several mono-colors.
@d.l.hemmingway3758
@d.l.hemmingway3758 7 лет назад
Personally I prefer the SS Dot Patterns, the Flektarn or the ATACS-FG for my area of operations. I live in Eastern Kansas as we don't get as brown as Central and Western Kansas do most of the year. The patterns I named work here because of the denser foilage and the fact the grasslands here remain green for more of the year than they do farther west. And yes the UPC patterned they first used was a failure. The old World War Two OD #3 a mustard yellowy green and in some cases a yellow-greenish tan like on the field gear of the day and the M-1941 Field Jacket work far better than does the UCP. I know I did World War Two Reenactment for nearly two and a half years and wore the WW-2 European Theater of Operations uniform. Heck even the old Werhmacht Feldgrau worked better than UCP. I remember one winter Tactical Reenactment FTX where we were in a heavily wooded area on the Iowa shore of the Missouri River just across from Omaha, NE. The G.I. reenactors stuck out like sore thumbs as their green was the wrong shade compared to the cedar and other evergreen trees and shrubs in the area and the ones doing German Werhmacht and Waffen SS were extremely hard to spot. The ones in Feldgrau looked like tree trunks especially when they were motionless.

The German camo patterns were the first, all the rest which followed are just variations. Look at A-TACS, MultiCam and others on the market. They closely resemble the old German patterns, especially A-TACS. Our Woodland camo was based on a German pattern.
@flashdamingo
@flashdamingo 7 лет назад
woodland and it's parent ERDL were developed from German liebermuster .....which also became known as alpenflage........... Flecktarn must have been influenced by erbsenmuster.......... IMO multicam is like a blend of ERDL and and Japanese Jeitai itself a child pattern of flecktarn........multicam of course uses a transitional colour scheme at least of original multicam. what pattern influenced atacs IYO ?
@flashdamingo
@flashdamingo 7 лет назад

@chimay3

And Digital Jungle isn't far from modern Flecktarn.
@flashdamingo
@flashdamingo 7 лет назад
av chimay which pattern is digital jungle ? Marpat ? Marpat (and cadpat/acu) is supposed to be pixelated tigerstripe. The pixel /digital effect uses the same 'dithering' technique as the flecktarn family of patterns. Interestingly tigerstripe evolved from the 'french lizard' pattern which is in the brushstroke family of pattern that grew from the ww2 denison smock designs the allies had....lol its a cousin of DPM pattern I guess. so Marpats kind of a hybrid...
@chimay3
@chimay3 7 лет назад
Sorry flashdamingo. I've been searching chineese Ebay too much lately. Yes, it's Marpat (not cadpat/acu), on chineese Ebay called Digital Jungle, same way as they use "Ruins Green" instead of "A-Tacs FG". A-Tacs FG and Flecktarn are my favourites, but for nostalgic reasons, next time in Prague soon I will get me some Italian Telo Mimetico. How we loved it when I was is the Home Guard in Norway in my youth, on the west coast 40 years ago. Brilliant camo for that terrain, bougth with our private money and used unofficially. German Wustentarn/Steppentarn is also fantatic camo for multiple terrains, but the cloathings made in that pattern are just for good weather here in Norway.

But other ones i could make out roughly were you were because of thing like the helmets shape or the gear you had, which are abnormal shapes in that environment. And in some shots it was super easily because of the green pants, which stood out. Overall the camo is extremely good, in this type of environment. And when it fully covers you and your green. Plus if you took extra precautions to break silhouette, you'd cut out the thing that gave you away the most.

Here I must disagree. The camo is good yes, but you can't just slap on a camo and expect to be hidden in plain sight. In most of the clips I could instantly see them, or, due to surroundings, even though I didn't spot them, the approximate position was very predictable. For example, in clip 2. I didn't see them, but I was 99% sure they will come from the left and center openings, and I was right.

WoomyB Actually Operation Barbarossa was the turning point. Had that not happened (or was done smarter) things could have also been different. Normandy was a cake walk compared to what it could have been as Germany's best troops were fighting or dead on the Eastern Front. Anyway the two points are not mutually exclusive. America didn't want to enter the war and would not have were it not for Pearl Harbour. Had Hitler been smarter and the Axis actually work together Japan would have attacked Russia's eastern Front and America wouldn't have entered the war.

Oh yes and while German tactics may have been brilliant, Barbarossa shows they can't make up for such bad strategy from the top. Hell the northern army were seen as liberators and the Ukraine would have joined them which would have made a huge difference to the centre army but nooo blind bigotry threw that away.

Actually, Russia had plans to invade Germany either way. So by the Germans invading Russia during Barbarossa, they extended the war massively. The problem was the Germans encountered *Russian Winter*. Russian Winter came earlier than expected, and the Germans simply did not have the proper gear or supplies to survive. Due to the mud season, literally, all of Russia turned into a muddy landscape no less than 3 feet deep, forcing German armor to get stuck. The Russian tanks like the T-34, with their wide tracks, were made to somewhat lessen the burden of mud and snow. German slave workers were also sabotaging the German supply chain, fucking up the goods at the factory. General Paulus of the 6th Army or whatever Army Group that I can't remember, was losing 1,200 men *a day* to frostbite. *If everything would've gone to plan without any failure or fuckery, the Germans would've conquered Moscow* But then there'd be a huge as guerrilla war, and the Germans would never be able to hold it, it would be just awful.

Great video and great camo. I have watched nearly all your camo demonstrations but I have to say seeing you talking to the camera in full SS rig makes you look really scary. Thanks for posting.

Excellent demonstration video. WW2 Germany were so forward thinking in the uniform patterns and weapon technology - it's truly amazing. They were decades ahead of the rest of the world and their gear is still valid today. Unfortunately for them, the idiots were running the show! Thank you!

Nice video, most of the scenes were tough too detect! What I learned from this is that camo is most effective when you're not moving, so It seems its best in a defensive situation.

Damn this is actually an excellent pattern. The German Army was ahead of it's time. I heard that the primary reason they failed was because of how expensive all of their stuff was. The US could crank out 30 Shermans for 4 Tiger tanks (not accurate numbers but you get the idea).

Wow….i literally just got into alpenflage which is my absolute favorite, waiting on my first outfit to arrive, but man oh man is the SS Camo effective as hell. Even after you guys exposed your positions, moved forward towards the camera then stopped you basically evaporated right back into the brush. Scary effective, i would not want to have been up against these guys at all. I love your camo videos by the way, just found your channel tonight and subscribed instantly, fantastic work Teufel Hunden

Good video! To my eyes what gave you away the most was the gas mask canister. Also I think I spotted you about 0.5 seconds before you fired your rifle, so yeah I'm awake now.

Each time that you moved I paused the video and squinted my eyes and this pattern blended in very well as long as you were near something to break up your shape. The colors and patterns seemed to blend well until you were close enough and didn't have coverage. No other camo pattern would perform better.
