I was skating a curb solo one night. Early 90's. Out of the dark another skater appeared. It was Gershon. We skated a bit, and he showed me how to do pop shuv it under flips... coolest guy, no attitude, all soul. Thanks Gershon!

Bro. I swear I saw Gershon today. I was driving down San Pablo Ave by Emeryville skatepark and bro was skating up the street. I saw him and pulled up and was trying to get him to pull over, I was like yo fam. I was trying to give the big homie the legend his salute but he ducked off. Still dope to see him though. I met Ron Allen the other day, triple OG first black pro skateboarder ever. He's painted on the mural at Emeryville skatepark, and still shredding out here till this day, I think he's in his 60s. Salute all the Legends motivating me to shred hard into my older years.

Over 20 years ago skated with Gershon on Christmas in Phoenix at random. I was there at trade school, we ran into some locals who took us street skating. "F*ckin Destroyed it" doesn't even come close to how good Gershon skates in person. Savage!

Oh man, this dude is OG. Switch front smith on lock, switch grinds on rails when nobody was even thinking about that. I remember me and my friends sitting there in disbelief, rewinding and counting how many switch tricks he did in a row in his Opinion part. His part in The Reason is so damn good as well, editing, skating, music, that whole video is insane. The slowed down sound of the fs noseslide on that black rail is forever ingrained in my brain.

Man one of the best interviews yet boys. Gershon and I must be about the same age, and if you were around back then you can recall what an anemic environment skating was.... there weren't a lot of us, and there was hardly a skatepark around, yet dudes like Gershon were like a beacon, breaking new ground. Dig his outlook on life, we are all people beyond the "identity" of skating. Being self-employed now I appreciate the tax talk too! Thanks Nine Club.

I'm glad you guys didn't cut out a lot of the things Gershon said about the skate industry. It seems like a lot of older pros had to deal with sketchy business practices, and I'm sure a lot of them got taken advantage of.

That's the impression I got too. Seems like he might have burned a lot of bridges. I'm not saying he's lying, but just seemed to have a hard time articulating why he moved companies so often. And Roger even called him out by asking, "you were unhappy, but not unhappy enough to leave the world camp" as blind was part of world at that time. And his conflicts with Rodney seemed completely misinterpreted. When he said Rodney was suggesting tricks for him to do at the contest, Gershon got angry. But from an outsiders perspective, it seemed like Rodney was just trying to give him some fatherly advice to a guy who didn't have his run planned out. Rodney just wanted to see Gershon succeed.

You have no idea of the people I interacted with and why situation turned out the way they did(varying reasons). Skated with Gershon a few times at classic Rhodes skatepark in Boise idaho. Such a chill dude and a legend. Biggest frontside flip I have ever seen on the metal halfpipe with the warp on the bottom.

I saw Gershon skating at a parking garage in San Jose where a few friends and I were also skating. This was around 1992 or 93. Gershon snapped his board in half on a landing after doing some combo ollie to kickflip type of trick. His board was still held together by the grip tape, so he kept riding and slapping grinds and other tricks with that broken board. My jaw was on the floor. This dude was, still is one bad rippin' mofo.

Great interview! Gershon is definitely seems to genuinely enjoy talking. I liked how tactful some of his comments were and how straight up and blunt others were. His Powell and A-Team stories were the ones I thought were most interesting because people tend to not talk about 90s Powell much and A-Team had such few people involved that it seems tough for those guys to speak out. I realized that people don't generally have anything bad to say about Powell as a company but they seem to never want to touch on the subject of George Powell himself.That said, a short Nine Club session with Gershon would be super cool. I enjoyed his skating a lot back in the day.
