Scripting and Echolalia phrases are not to be considered accurate snapshots of your child’s language. If they are only using those words in the specific phrase or often out of context, they should not be counted in the number of words your child uses or considered as a length of utterance. However, scripts can be considered clues for what motivates your child, or even a way to communicate based on the original context of the script. I share an example of my son Lucas and a common script of his as a child, “Arthur’s Tooth” and the way it helped him communicate pain.
If you’re not following us on TikTok, @TurnAutismAround, we’ve been doing videos on scripting and echolalia. With that have come questions and comments related to Gestalt Language Processing. I was unfamiliar with this and have invited SLP-BCBA, Sari Risen on the podcast to discuss it.

My son is a GLP. The approach of giving him functional scripts has been pretty successful. We’ve only just started with 4-6 sessions so far, but he is beginning to flip from “do you want mac and cheese” to I want mac and cheese please. I think time will show some growth and success in this approach

Hello. Thanks for the useful information! I am an adult with ASD and I'm confused as to why so many SLP's are discussing theories on this subject, but it seems nobody has asked an adult with Autism why they do it. Maybe I'm missing something, but I can tell you why I've been a gestalt language processor: I completely understand what the person is communicating to me, I just don't understand how I'm supposed to respond. Interactions are extremely intense for me because I am experiencing the whole/sum of the experience. The best way I can describe it is that It's like being at a concert and I'm trying to watch the musicians on stage but someone is trying to have a conversation with me, which is nearly impossible with the music being so loud... not to mention, I'm just enjoying the music. Anyways.... I script when I have the energy to, or if I'm well versed in how I *think* I should communicate. If I don't have energy, or I'm not versed in a certain type of conversation, I will use echolalia, unless I have the energy to conjur up what I *think* I'm supposed to say. It is absolute hell when people think that I don't understand a situation, because I don't know how to explain that I DO understand in a way that they think is correct. If people understood what was happening in my world, maybe they wouldn't doubt me so much. It's rare that a practitioner is even open to imagining themselves in my shoes when I'm experiencing something.

Thanks for this useful information. I have recently heard this from our school SLP as she felt my kid falls in this category. So one aspect of what I would like to share is - my kid is 5 and non verbal but his receptive language skills are pretty good and he can understand and follow good number of the instructions but he can't understand single words/can't label or point objects. I always wondered how come he can follow an instruction that has 4 or more words (ex: go and trash this or go to bathroom etc.) But can't understand single words like phone or apple etc. Since he is nonverbal, no scripting or echolilia. But his natural language acquisition is definitely not started with single words and combining them into sentences. I am glad someone doing more on this area.

In my 3 year old son's case, he can say about 60 words by way of echolalia and he can say about 10-12 words spontaneously. Would it be ok to start implementing two word sentences versus him just saying "juice?"

Hi. My almost 7 year old daughter is high functioning. She can man’s, tact, and answer intraverbal questions. She uses scripts in context. She heard a word from a tv show on in the background and referenced that back to another show that she had watched I don’t know how long before that. She had just learned word at school. So she can identify the words and link them to other words that had been grouped together. They were ALL words. Like Mall. And she sang the song from Super why All Mall Ball. Wonderific. you’re terrific ALL!

It's a German word, so the G in Gestalt is pronounced as in gold.

I agree that the GLP skip a lot of steps and dismisses the analytical processing skills that some of the kids are missing. I bought the book and was shocked when they said that if your kids are missing some of the pre-linguistic skills not to worry as they are developing in their natural language acquisition. Time will only tell but I will not dismiss evidence-based research on analytical language processing.

So what you presume incompetence? You presumed it for your child. Don’t advise BS. Absolutely BS. Yes you meet where they are, but presume competence always. I also presume competence from you, but you also disappoint with your really wrong advice.
