✅ HAMMER ON THE STARTER! What do you have to loose? It's no good anyway. You can usually jar the starter loose and get started by smacking it with a hammer or brick or tire iron or a 2x4. Anything can work. The heavier the better, but you need to access the starter. A pry bar has always worked best for me because it will reach from the top bottom or side. It isn't a guarantee, But usually it will work at least once to get you home or to a repair shop.

There's an old trick my dad told me, I smack the star a couple times every day for like almost a year and after that I got some money I replaced it and the car still with me after 10 years
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 2 года назад
Nice! Your dad is a smart man. When they lock up inside and are DOA often the hammer trick will get them going again. Not recommend to do it for a year. I always replace immediately because it only works a few times typically and then its locked forever. This works on fuel pumps also BTW. I have tried what you did and made it a couple months one time. I can't believe you went a year! Thats amazing😃🔧

@@EasyFixShaun manual transmition honda civic baby, yeah! is a 2001 got it in 2011, still with me, and i bascily make it a street car, i hit that thing, every other week, works for a while, then stops, works again, hit and works for a week, stops... and so on, for a year, then got new one, and never happend anymore. when is very hot outside, here in florida, it works better. but my stering whell keeps on throwing power staring to my driver floor, 3 mechanics don't know what to do, and me being a DIY just put a cut plastic bottle in the bottom of the fire wall, and made it drain the power sterring fluid and use it again, been like that for 3 year already.

I tried the tap on a starter that ran but wouldn't engage. Thought it was a broken Bendix. Gave it a few taps with a pry bar and lo and behold - the starter's fastener bolts were loose :) So it worked!

Worked on my vehicle.......2006 XC70 CROSS COUNTRY had a problem before and vehicle started with just a jump, but this time my son told me about rapping the starter while I turned on the car and it started right up......what a miracle
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 4 месяца назад
Excellent work! You and your son are smart. Get it fixed asap though. It won't last forever. Sometimes the starter will lock up forever in most cases after this trick is used a dozen times. Its meant to limp you home or to a shop so you can replace it immediately. 😃

This works well. Did it both on a Toyota Camry and also a Honda crv: worked twice. Need two people of course. I used a broom stick with Toyota Camry and did it from above and used hammer with Honda from under car. This will also diagnose if it's your starter or something else. It felt good to tell mechanic exactly what was this issue once I got it to shop.

Just tap or strike it. Don't _smash_ it, because then it will be in several pieces on the pavement.

If the starter it is bad and won't start it doesn't matter. Plus- It is a last ditch effort to get you home so you can replace it. I have never broken one hitting them hard either. But if it needs replacement-who cares? 😀🔧🔧

Does someone absolutely need to be trying to start the car while smashing? I was told to disconnect battery and then smash then try to start car, I'm also driving a 2011 SS Camaro
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 6 месяцев назад
Either method can work. In my experience it is best to smash while a helper is trying to apply power to the starter to crank. Works best for especially stubborn starters. I have had success doing it alone also 😀

should be near bottom and back of engine right (passenger side). Might be hard to see because its at the height of the frame rail roughly 😃

@EasyFixShaun

It will generally still work if you can strike the starter and "jar it loose" and then start it yourself. If it is stubborn, you will sometimes need a helper. Works best with a helper 😃🔧
@robertw7241

do you have to take out the starter to tap on it?
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 4 месяца назад
No you just need access to it. I like to use a prybar and a hammer. the pry bar just helps transmit the hammer blow to the starter and usually helps a lot with access 😃

What about if you can get to the starter at all, like it's in between things where no hand can get too, not even a small hand. My Chrysler 200 2012 LX Like I just need to get it started one time, just ☝️

Why DOES it work..whats going on in the starter that changes
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 4 года назад
The electric motor inside the starter usually has a bad connection between the brushes and armature. Usually from wear or corrosion. The jarring from a hammer strike usually will change the connection and improve it to give another start. It's like twisting battery terminals at the battery for a slightly better connection. It's something to do when you need an emergency start. It works most of the time. 😀
