I can shed a little light on the oil filter differences. The Fram one has a very ‘Japanese’ style of concave top plate, basically as you tighten it, the thread is pulled ‘in’ & ‘tighter’ to the thread, this is normally combined with a round section oil seal but, curiously, it had a European type square seal. Either way, this filter will be almost identical to the Kubota OE & my choice every time. In 35yrs in Automotive I’ve NEVER seen or heard of a genuine case of one of this type failing or coming loose. The Beta filter is almost ‘generic European’ in appearance. You made the correct point about the identical seal diameters and I’m sure Beta will be recommending a filter in line with correct service intervals, but because of the thread plate, OE dimensions (easier to fit) & reputable brand (correct filter material), personally I’d fit the Fram version……as you did! 😁
Glad you found it useful. I have t admit that the small diameter ones are easier to get on - especially now I have a webbing strap rather than the chain I had been struggling with.
do they sor of fit over the filter cartridge and if so how do they accommodate the different diameters? H I have to admit that I dont like the chain which slips.
Life at 2.3 miles an hour They fit over the end of the filter like a cap with a hole for the socket wrench There sized to the filter so if you have different sized filters you would need one for each I would definitely get one for oil filter at the back of the engine would make life easier You should be able to get one from Halfords or any local car spares shop where you get your filters from
Weird, but for me engine running season can be the winter when it is needed for making up for the solar that doesn't generate electricity. In most years engine hours are about equal between summer cruising and winter electric, but this year is going to be winter heavy. same oil filter and same oil though. not sure on quantity but I think mine takes more than that unfortunately 7.5 litres rings a bell, awkward volume!
Nice to see a clean engine bay. Wouldn't it be better to check the oil level after you run the engine to allowe the new oil filter to fill up, or does the 5 litres you put in take this into account?
From past experience I know 5 litres of new oil settles at just below full when filled from empty. I would take a bit more care on an unfamiliar engine.
Just a thought Andy, it might be wise to check before fitting the new oil filter that the old oil filter seal has been removed, two seals can lead to a big mess in the bilge 😕
Another way of removing oil filters is to tap a sharp screwdriver through the side of the oil filter and use that for leverage. That never failed for me.
Which version is this? I'm about to change mine for the 1st time but it's a beta 35 bd1305. In the manual it says 7.5 litres capacity which is also what it's says for the beta 38 bd1505. Just curious as to your engine variant as to whether I can use 5 litres also
I think mine is the shallow oil pan version - 5 litres is perfect to get the the top of the dipstick marker. I suggest you buy two five litre cans and empty one in and check. If it works you will still have enough for the next change in 250 hours!
