We deliver a bicycle to my friend Cyril and check out his garage full of bike stuff. Then we go into Chicago to pick up a new bike for the garage! Something isn't quit right with the shifting. Check it out and let me know what you think.

The group on the Oschner is Campagnolo Triomphe. The crank has tapered spider arms (Victory are straight, with 7mm self-extractor bolts), the derailleur has black pulleys (Victory are white), pedals have horseshoe-shaped platform (Victory is more triangular) and blue nylon straps (Victory were white). Both Victory and Triomphe were based on Gran Sport, and pedal axles and hub axles will interchange with Gran Sport. Other, less obvious differences are Victory has a symmetrical bottom bracket axle, while Triomphe is asymmetrical (same as Gran Sport), and the Victory rear derailleur has a small (easy to lose) toothed insert to set the "angle of the dangle," while Triomphe has a fixed stop. The Victory crank is satin anodized, while the Triomphe crank is tumble-polished. In the product heirarchy, Victory was higher than Triomphe. N.B. the Triomphe pedals are among my favorites for a touring bike, as they accommodate both slotted cleat bike shoes and provide good support for soft-soled street shoes. Re: the chain. SedisSport chains work fine with Uniglide freewheels; in fact, a Uniglide (600 or Dura-Ace) freewheel with a SedisSport chain shifts extremely well.

Thank you for the wealth of knowledge. I'm a big fan of the sedis sport chain. It runs quieter and normally shifts better than most. However, with the uniglide freewheel, I prefer the uniglide chain. Thanks for all the feedback.

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage, Uniglide freewheel and SedisSport chain is my preferred drivetrain, I run in on several bikes here with various derailleurs. I do have a good supply of NOS SedisSport chain, which means I don't have to spend $$$ sourcing Uniglide chain. N.B. Shimano made a special chain tool for Uniglide chain, to avoid damaging the bulged side plates: drive.google.com/file/d/1PbxdmPksf-yXjIq2oSkJPhhIztawcdIQ/view?usp=sharing

Is the spring worn out in the derailleur cage? Beautiful blue paint!
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage

I love the color as well. The spring is fine. The derailleur goes where it's supposed to. I think the pulley is just too far away from the cog.
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 10 месяцев назад
The derailleur is getting where it needs to go for sure. I have it "over" adjusted to the outside and it still doesn't pull the chain over. Im pretty sure that this derailleur with this dropout doesn't allow the derailleur to pivot forward enough.

The workmanship on that frame is beautiful! I thought for a second that those Campy brakes might have been Cobalto, but the quick releases are wrong. I always thought those were pretty cool looking. I dropped out of cycling in the mid 70s, so anything after that and through the 80s is foreign to me. When I picked up where I left off with bikes in the early 2000s, I was shocked at all of the changes. I made the mistake of venturing in some shops in search of parts, the usual response was a rude comment saying those were obsolete parts. So, it was all online purchases and I did my own wrenching. I would have loved to have had access to a shop like Beverly, though I did find a vintage friendly shop a bit later.

It's a lonely Hobby for sure. Thanks for saying hi on Facebook. I rode my 77 schwinn paramount on RAGBRAI in 2005 and some of the older riders said I was crazy to ride that bike! Then I started my collection in 2013 after a huge barn haul and I discovered Bikeforums.net. Other than the bike snobs I found it to be my peeps. They had the same passion as I did.

I knew lots of the regulars, Kurt, Pastor Bob, SCooper, etc. I stopped in a few months ago to tell them I was still alive. I hope to get more active with bikes once again, I retired and moved to the Boise, ID area from San Diego, I have been working on my new house which has kept me pretty well occupied for now. Another idea, is the hanger of Simplex/Huret design rather than Campagnolo?
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 10 месяцев назад
Not sure of the brand of the dropout. However, it looks to have the standard stop on it, like a campagnolo or Shimano. It does appear as if the derailleur is not sitting as forward as it could.
@duringthemeanwhilst
@duringthemeanwhilst 10 месяцев назад
is there a P screw you can adjust on the rear derailleur? it's often overlooked when setting gears up
@kipwilliams9266
@kipwilliams9266 10 месяцев назад
Hey John, try lengthening the chain on the Oschner a few more links with help i think. Assume you lubed the derailleur? It might like a bath in Cyril’s ultrasound and then some lube. Or maybe just running it through the gears a few dozen times, probably a little oxidation/ rust happening after it has sat for so long, may loosen up with use. Good luck.
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 10 месяцев назад
Hey thanks for the suggestions. The derailleur is getting to where it needs to go. It has free movement for sure. Second. If I lengthen the chain it sags in the small small position. That is what makes this frustrating. I believe its because this derailleur on this dropout doesn't settle far enough forward. So far that is my take.

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage what size are the small cogs on that freewheel? Maybe you need a different tooth count for clearance. I used to have a Lygie that had a spacing problem that seems similar and I finally gave up on the smallest cog, there was just no stack with a small enough tooth count on the bottom to make it work right and fit ( on a freewheel…maybe a modern free hub would have worked).. and/or what are the tooth counts on your chainrings? Maybe you need something like a 44/52 instead of a 42/52 or something like that..

I went through a few of those UniGlide chains back in the day. While the design seems okay they easily stretch because the links are stamped with that arched shape which will pull itself straight under load. With hind sight it's pretty gimmicky and that was when Suntour was kicking everyone's butt with there slanted parallelogram design which everyone copied after the patent expired. I still have my first generation Cyclone derailleurs.
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 10 месяцев назад
I hear ya. That first gen Cyclone was probably the best shifting derailleur out at the time. No doubt. Ive seen full campy bikes with long cage Cyclones on the rear.. It made total sense.

Cyril has some fun stuff! The Raleigh track bike is my favorite, though... but I'm a Raleigh fan too! As for how to pronounce Campagnolo... I just say "Campy". Good luck with the Oschner's derailleur. Don't those have the same geometry as a Nuovo Record? It seems to shift quite a bit worse than my NR's.
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 10 месяцев назад
Upon for the reflection it might be the dropout. The dropout on there does not allow the derailleur to angle further forward
@sergiografbike

I haved a similar problem , and I solved, using a more long chain. The your chain length is to short! Try another chain with more length. Will work perfect! Regards from Brasil!

I have tried it with two additional links. Then in the small small combination the chain hangs down.
@Allebonneur
@Allebonneur 7 месяцев назад
Have the exact same derailleur and have no problems with it. Your problem could be a bent derailleur hanger. Using a derailleur hanger alignment gauge like a Park Tool DAG-2.2 should clarify if that is the case which then is easily corrected.

I’m considering an Audi TT convertible like yours, praying I can fit in it at 6’2”. What do you think, is it cramped? It just like yours but without the baseball glove seats, 100K miles, clean overall. Still digging yours? It’s between the TT and a Toyota MR2, original version, if I can find one. By the way, looking great man!

There were a some years in the 80s where Campagnolo as a company was a dumpster fire. Unfortunately these parts came from that era. I always shook my head during that time period when the Campy worshipers defended their trash products. I loved Campy I get it but I was racing bikes and needed performance not a wall display.
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 10 месяцев назад
It was a very rough breakup for the campy heads. They still had superior races and bearings and finishes but Shimano made a mockery in terms of shifting and braking performance for sure!

No question the Synchro era was one everyone would like to forget but they came back strong with 8-speed Ergopower, no? The 9-speed stuff was great too. Not as much of a fan of 10 or 11 OTOH but my experience overall is the same as back-in-the-day: Shimano wears out, Campagnolo wears in. The current stuff (EKAR excluded perhaps) is way too "Shimangolo" for my liking but I'm no longer their target market as I've got enough old Campy bits to last the rest of my cycling life. Polished aluminum and chromed steel forever!!!!

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage No, not the spring inside the parallelogram, but the spring internal where the cage mounts. That's the mounting bolt/spring below the cable anchor in the picture above. The grease could be dry or the spring frozen or broken.
