What to do if you were fired from your last job. There's three simple steps I'm going to walk you through that are going to show you how to explain why you were fired, terminated, or laid off, and why it's not an issue or why it shouldn't be a concern for them.
The first thing you want to do is Accept Responsibility for what happened to you. Most people, when they go into an interview and they try to explain why they were fired, they're always placing blame on the employer. They're like, “Oh, they didn't like me” or “It was too hard there” or “They were mean to me” “I was bullied” and some of these things may be true. But you know what? From an employer standpoint of view, it sounds like you're whining, it sounds like you're complaining and that's not the kind of person that they want to hire.

It's ridiculous people can't just go to work just to work. Instead we have to worry about being liked or being part of a click / or social group Within the job place. Employers can just fire you simply because you're not liked, despite whether you're able to do the job or not. It's a shame there's not a federal law that stops this kind of stuff from happening. All we can wish for in this case, for now, is Karma!!

Jeremiah Klyn yes thank you and same for you. But i do want say I was able to find a job and get hired easy and didn't even want reference from my boss that is cool that hired me but he said it wasn't necessary. I tried to keep it short my answers and I didn't have to mention I got fired. In fact I'm gonna get paid a lil more then what I was getting paid and same hours so I was very happy and blessed thanks to my friend who helped me get the job. Once she knew I got fired she decided to help me without me realizing it and I can't thank her enough cause she is a hero and angel to me. God is good.

I got fired last week from a job I just took because "I wasn't a good fit". I was at that job for a week. One week. I didn't even begin doing any of the actual work they hired me for and I hardly knew anyone. Everything seemed fine, nothing unusual, no dramatic event or workplace conflict, etc., I was just told I wasn't a good fit. I asked them to elaborate and they wouldn't. I can't stand the fact that employers can just let someone go with impunity when the employee didn't violate any company rules, policies, and did absolutely nothing wrong. It's insane. It was the most ridiculous and unprofessional thing that's ever happened to me. Employers don't care how firing someone can drastically affect their professional and personal lives, their families, and their financial well-being. No matter how much you like or dislike the company you work for, or how invaluable you think you are to them, always remember that you are expendable.

I was fired after only a few hours, when I found out the employer lied about pay, they told me on my first day I would be getting less than half of promised wage. I stated the amount I was promised, and I was told- and Im quoting... "get your shit and get out". Wow. Utter shock. I still have not seen any check for the hours I even was there. Somehow, Im not suprised. What a shit show.

This happened to me yesterday after working for a plumbing company for 2 months. I was fired yesterday because I didn't meet expectations I am a beginner at plumbing and I informed my employer of this at the job interview and he agreed to hire me as an apprentice. Well after 2 months he gave me the boot. It seemed so unfair. Is it even possible to grasp even a bit of the knowledge of plumbing in 2 months?

Stephen Ford : Sorry that happened, hopefully it means better things are in store for you. Sometimes employers or hiring managers make unrealistic assumptions about an applicant. Also a LOT of so-called “trainers” have little or no teaching skills. Just because a person is good at a job doesn’t mean s/he’s good at teaching another person to do the job.

That's an awful experience. With it being a one-week job, you could leave it off of your resume and treat it like it never happened. Hopefully, you did not leave another job to take that one-week job. Best to you! I hope that you have found another job in the meantime and are dong well.

Had a similar situation happen to me end of last year 2020. Was taking an anti depressant to help with my social anxiety for being in alot of meetings at work. I stopped my medicine cold turkey and it made me go in a mantic mind of state, caused me to cuss my supervisor out getting arrested and fired , they knew it wasn't me but since I was gone for more than 5 days with no contact got fired . It sucks it was a really good job and now struggling to land a job due to my pending charges

He was arrested 2x for his rage against his supervisors! Then he got fired around christmas 2012! Sought revenge and retribution, lost 2 court cases to his employers, & lost thousands of dollars to attorney fees! The misery doesnt stop here. He doesn't go out unless necessary. No job. No vacations. No eating out. Doesn't celebrate any kind of holiday as he lost interest in anything socially-related. Almost no social interactions outside his family. Wife works and cooks for him daily. He has 2 junk cars sitting in his backyard and other clutters. He also collects cans and bottles to get paid for recycling ♻️. I mean Cuong is a miserable guy who has no real, honest hope in his life anymore! That's 10 years of misery n denial of his mental illness conditions. He likes to brag in front of others, but his pain and agony overpowers him inside. His false pride 😤 is what leads him to self destruction! What a shame. People on this site have more courage than 🐔 Cuong! A failure covers n lies about his issues. That's Cuong.

Bosses lie constantly so don't feel bad about stretching the truth. Tell them your contract ended, or you got made redundant, or you were misinformed about the job responsibilities and it wasn't the going in the right direction.

Galactic Khan same happened to me. They said it was work performance yet in January of this year I was told everyone was happy with my work. Made zero sense. You know if it was legit and you could have done better vs. When it’s bs and you worked hard and they have you some lame excuse. Don’t take accountability for an employers issues. The girl before me wasn’t good enough either. Shocker. Yet I had 2 past employers contact me trying to get me to work for them again instead while I was at this job for a year in a half. I must be so horrible at my job to be friends with all my past employers and have them want to rehire me let me tell ya! Lol

The fact is people like get let go from jobs all the time for unfounded reasons.. I am not gonna fall on the sword or admit to something I didn't do just to make myself look courageous etc. To me that's a lack of integrity if that's not truly what happened.

I My job has given 3 separate lies as to why I was fired the third one they gave to unemployment office I called the hr dept I said straight out so which lie are you actually going with 1 2 or 3 ??? Anyone here because they just got fired? I got fired for not being able to handle all the paper work. I’ll take the blame sure. I wasn’t trained properly to handle stressful situations. Reason for leaving your last job, just simply say on your application that your job ended and leave it at that unless they ask for more details during the interview. By saying that your job ended, you wouldn't be lying no matter the reason for being let go unless you left voluntarily. But if your fired, terminated, or laid off, all of those do mean that your job ended at least for you. Plus most companies use employee at will policy, so they can let you go for any reason whatsoever or for no reason.

I was terminated because they said my performance did not meet their requirements. Meanwhile I felt like the expectations were not clearly communicated or aligned between myself and the employer when I took the job and I felt I worked above and beyond to compensate for the scope of work that was much larger than what we had agreed upon. Ultimately I heard they hired a senior pm vs retaining me as a PM and helping me grow. How do I explain or accept the fact they in reality needed to hire someone with more experience yet did not provide me adequate support to get me into a larger role despite knowing my experience level

I'm never going to tell anyone I was fired. In the UK a previous employer is only obliged to mention the period you were in employment for - nothing more. When I got fired I felt absolutely gutted. However instead of immediately going to a bar and drowning my sorrows, I went immediately to a local library and started studying in my IT field. I never stopped studying until I had passed a professional certification. I used the certification to go into business for myself and 3 years later I am still working for myself having had assignments in the UK, The Netherlands, Belgium and Spain! Getting fired from that crappy job and away from an insane fuck of a project manager was one of the best things ever to happen to me. However the icing on the cake was when I sent an email from my client's email service telling the truth about the behind closed doors insane antics of my project manager and it ended up with him getting fired! Truly poetic!!

Don’t listen to that first point. Sometimes it’s not your fault and you may have been discriminated against, and you must get a lawyer. This isn’t always the case, however. In the instance where you were discriminated it’s important you do not accept/agree with the employer when they fire you.

I totally relate to this. I was working in a hotel, got bullied from a team leader. I spoke up to HR and they didn't sort it out for me. I decided to resign but received from them a termination letter just because I spoke up. Months after that, I got a part-time jobs in a better workplace.

America has hardly any employee protection legislation. No protection from unfair dismissal or constructive dismissals by the sound of it and no unsatisfactory performance procedure. It's just 'you're fired' and that's that. In the UK you can take a company to an Employment Tribunal and sue them for all sorts of reasons.

European employee protection is both good and bad. If you are a lazy unproductive bum of an employee, then laws make it difficult to terminate you. If you are a good, honest, hardworking person, then laws rightfully protect you from evil corporations. you're right though, in the US, employment is "at will" and good people get fired every day, to no fault of their own.

America sucks when it comes to employe discrimination and there is no protection for employer discrimination against their own employee's. I'm glad to see UK at least stand for their own people, unlike cowardly administrators and hiring managers in America.

I’m loving these videos ! I subscribed to the channel after doing horrible in a Abercrombie (clothing store) interview . I felt awful, since I wasn’t interviewed in years almost a decade to be exact and I didn’t have any experience on that field. I got fired for coming in sick. I told my manager that I was super sick and he said that was okay then the end of the day he let me go because I couldn’t give them 100%. It was a very high maintenance place. I’ve been struggling how to explain this without people thinking I’m lying

I was just fired today. It was a call center. They told me I violated a security protocol. When I asked to hear the call to see what they were taking disciplinary actions for they denied my request and said they didn't have to do that. I was so mad and shocked. I've worked in this place for almost 3 years. I have no idea how I am going to explain this in my next interview...

Well don't say anything bad about your ex-boss. Maybe you could just give the reason they fired you and say you only agree with part of it or say there was a misunderstanding. The interviewer might be afraid you will also talk badly of them someday if you talk bad about an old boss.

I'm glad I listened to the end. The reasons we have been fired are different, so I handle it a lil differently. The first time I was seeing things in the company I could've reported n they knew I was seeing it, so they used my medical condition to get rid of me. The 2nd time I was given a choice to be fired or practice outside my scope of practice and I was not comfortable with the 2nd choice, so I chose to be fired the 2nd time. I prefer not to go to an interview describing the negative things I saw in previous employers... if that makes any sense. ☺

- Employers dont give a shit why you were fired. - Just tell them you resigned, they dont care. Do NOT say you were fired. - They wont call your previous employer, if they do, its nothing to worry. I have been rejected for dozens of company I applied because I admitted that I hate my job before and my boss sucks. So I decided to tell the next batch of companies that I applied, that I resigned because I want to look for another career. Guess what? I got accpeted. Other companies even called me back after I got accepted. Dont overthink!

I was fired because I worked too hard and it set a bad example to people younger than me (millennials). I’m NOT joking. I was their manager and they felt obligated to work as hard as I did and the CEO said it would be bad for their mental well-being. Worked their for 4 years. Broke my heart.

Hello Don! Thank you for making this video. I just got kicked out from my job yesterday. The problem was that when they were going to tell me about that I had to let go, they kinda "sugarcoated" it, by starting the conversation with "You're such a nice girl, you take your instructions and job seriously and we are happy with you , BUT, you have a problem with working on your own and you're asking us for help when you don't understand, please notice that I've only been there for one month and they already say this, expecting me to be able to do EVERYTHING without asking for help when I'm new. That for me is just ridicolous. I got sad about this and honestly, I don't think that is the real reason. But when I keep asking them they just repeat the same "you're not good enough for us to work on your own " It's impossible for me because I've been showing my best sides but not good enough, apparantely. What can I do? How do I continue?

I work to provide for my niece and my sister and 18 years old. I got fired for eating chicken nuggets in front of managers that seemed to be okay at the time but wasn’t until the next two weeks when the owners reviewed cameras and saw me eating them and fired me. I took full responsibility even though it was my first job and because everyone around me made it okay I took the fall I’m still looking for a new job!

Hi, Don. I recently got terminated due to me “not communicating enough”, they didn’t think I would be a good fit for them in the future, and they mentioned that they were struggling to find work for me at this point in time. Being an introvert, I do have difficulty talking with people and I am currently working on improving my communication skills. Thankfully, my direct supervisor said that he was willing to help me with my resume and provide a positive reference and letter of recommendation. Despite this I am still a bit nervous about addressing this in my interview and what to put down the application because this isn’t the first time that I have been terminated from a position. Beside the tips provided in the video, do you have any more suggestions for me. I love your channel and appreciate what you are teaching us. Thanks.

I was fired once due to office politics. So my answer to that question for later interview was that I was a contractor and they decided not to renew my contract. That's it. You can tell them the truth that either you violated a policy or you didn't meet the KPI or whatever. But no matter how briefly you say the truth, it'll look bad on you. Because if you didn't reach the KPI at your previous company, how can you make the interviewer believe that you're competent enough for their company. Or say you violated a policy. If you did it once and get fired, that's very major violation, which will be a huge red flag for the interviewer. If you violated a policy multiple times and get fired, like constant being late, then how can you expect the interviewer to believe that you've changed or you will change? Besides, nobody likes being fired and most of people will have a victim mindset towards their experiences of being fired even if they're 100% the ones to blame. And we are after all humans, when talking about things like that, it's quite usually that your emotions trumps your rations, which will make you subconsciously rant about your previous employer.

Literally just got fired today I couldn’t pick up the skills fast enough to do the main labor work so they moved me to be a warehouse assistant I picked up how to do everything in the warehouse however I have to be able to make delivery’s your our job sites so the workers can do their job well I don’t have a drivers license as I have a fear of driving so I avoided it as much as possible and now I’ve been let go because of it

Are there any concerns about switching careers/industries after being let go? I was a high school math teacher let go for my performance and now my goal is to get an entry level actuarial position. How would you react to this interview answer? "The reason I left my last teaching position was because I was let go due to performance. I was notified in February that my contract would not be renewed and May would be my final month at this school. During my three years in my prior teaching position, performance wise, I went from being rated Beginning, to Effective, to Highly Effective. I was awarded teacher of the month during my final year for showing continuous growth. When I moved across the country and started at my new school, I don't think I effectively planned for the new environment I was in and that, in turn, led to my unsatisfactory performance. In the moment, I felt like the first 6 or 7 weeks were going great and according to plan. I did not realize that this was just a honeymoon phase and I actually needed a better plan from the start. I feel that despite my flexibility and drive to help students, my students needed a more traditional, structured environment with specific due dates and higher expectations. Also, I learned that if it is easier for students to get an A or B, it becomes more difficult to identify all of the students who are struggling and need more support. In October of that school year, when the honeymoon period was over, I found out that things were not going well in my classes. I consulted with my coworkers on their teaching styles and inquired with my students' counselors on ways to support my students. I found new activities that many of my students responded positively to. I also participated in optional professional development geared towards math teachers on my time off. However, despite my willingness to improve throughout my entire teaching career, the first semester at my new school just did not make the cut and I accept the result. I'm really excited to start over with this new career. I don't think teaching in general was a good fit for me and I'm ready for new things."

U r still better than my neighbor Cuong! Here's some motivation. U still have some time. U r not 60. My neighbor got fired when he was 50 around christmas 🎄 and his bday! How cursed is that? Take guts to admit u got issues. All humans do. U r not like my neighbor Cuong. He was arrested 2x for his rage against his supervisors! Then he got fired around christmas 2012! Sought revenge and retribution, lost 2 court cases to his employers, & lost thousands of dollars to attorney fees! The misery doesnt stop here. He doesn't go out unless necessary. No job. No vacations. No eating out. Doesn't celebrate any kind of holiday as he lost interest in anything socially-related. Almost no social interactions outside his family. Wife works and cooks for him daily. He has 2 junk cars sitting in his backyard and many other clutters. He also collects cans and bottles to get paid for recycling ♻️. I mean Cuong is a miserable guy who has no real, honest hope in his life anymore! That's 10 years of misery n denial of his major, mental illness conditions. He likes to put up a tough, fake front in front of others, but his pain and agony overpowers him inside. His false pride 😤 is what leads him to self destruction! What a shame. People on this site have more courage than 🐔 Cuong! A failure covers n lies about his issues. That's Cuong. U r definitely a good, useful person in our society! YOU ARE FREAKIN, PRECIOUS AND UNIQUE! Wish u accept Jesus Christ as your Savior so u can go to heaven after this life. God doesn't expect you to be perfect nor sinless. How can I take responsibility for the fact that my immediate supervisor takes an immense dislike to me? I outperform almost all my coworkers and constantly help with other people’s assignments I’ve tried sucking up to this boss and she literally waved me away with a swift backhand motion. She is increasingly giving me “verbal warnings”, on which some events were 100% fictitious. Hi Valerie this is Stephanie, yeah I can relate to what you are saying. I worked for a for-profit educational company once, and every time the kids went above percentile, I would get yelled at and would have to hear it that 'oh they don't need the program anymore.' So, the business model is something that is important to note too. Acknowledge your time there, show future employers how you've learned from that work experience, and move on! There are long-term physiological consequences and results when someone is constantly on edge. Being mad consistently creates diseased cells in the body and causes them to proliferate. Besides, you don't want to work for someone who is unappreciative of all your hard work! You are a great employee and you deserve to have your talents, skills, knowledge, and education supported and encouraged. Good luck!

This might be the way to get a new job, but I don't consider it moral to admit to doing something wrong if you didn't actually do anything wrong. I have a very corrupt employer currently and am leaving to get away from the corruption. I haven't been fired but management is incredibly abusive and it's not just me as this is a systemic problem where I work. In fact my abusers have themselves been abused. That's the kind of environment I work in and why I'm leaving, but regardless, the point is that I would never admit to wrongdoing when I am innocent.

Yep exactly why mine ended. I stuck up for myself against the abuse with a boundary and was fired next day. That job never allowed for healthy communication or respect. So given the reason any employer that asks I will tell them I wasn’t happy there and this is what makes me happy so I don’t go through that again. My job before felt like family so I know what a happy and healthy environment looks like.

I was just fired from my job today. I was just there 4 weeks and they fired me through my employment agency and gave no reason. I keep going over in my mind things I might have done or didn't do. I can't seem to put my finger on it. Im afraid to apply for another office job and I'm afraid to go in for another interview. My confidence is gone. I just dont know what to do. Exactly what I needed to hear. I was laid off at my own fault but it was a combination of factors: I did not have the profile and did not want to as I was passionate about it. Still I feel guilty for letting that happen but soon or later they would find out I wasn't ready nor was the right person. I really need help. I got fired on my first ever job. I only had the job for 1 month. I worked at a deli and I was told in the beginning I had to work with the machine. But something happened which means I cut my finger but not badly but minor. And they called me yesterday and said “I wasn’t suppose to use the machine” but was never told that at all in the beginning. And that “I was suppose to be certified” but again never was told about it.. please help. I am apply for jobs but idk what to say for “reason for leaving” on the application.

I was let go from my internship this week. I worked really hard to prove I belonged there. I was given a full-time offer, and I pushed too hard during negotiations to try to get more money so they rescinded the offer. I was pushing for more because I have a three month old son and a nephew in Peru that my wife and I want to bring to the states. They also ended my internship because I got an offer and didn’t take it. They’d have let me finish the week, but I got a call from another potential employer and took the call during work hours. I’m a recent college graduate and I just finished my Bachelor’s degree, so I don’t have a lot of experience. How do I go about recovering from this?

It,s not a big deal. No jobs are the same. How people are, what they expect and so on is pretty different from any place u get. And if you got fired, its just how it is. You can not expect you might match in everyplaces. keep trying, and you find a fine place for you sometime. Have tried to got fired sometimes before, and it hasn't stopped me from getting opportunities :)

What about states that are at will states where you can be fired for anything? I would say you were looking for a new experience especially if you have worked at the job for over 10.years. I don't believe the prospective employer can ask if you were fired. They can only ask how long did you work at the company.

How do I explain termination when I was fired after making a complaint for harassment? Two weeks after I made the complaint to HR? The only thing that could have improved my job experience was training. My training was cut short one manager left on medical leave ...the new manager compared my job to her previous company. She was abusive verbally to me and I had multiple witnesses to this....how do I explain??? I feel like i'm on the losing end.

I have a Similar problem. What he is saying is your excuse for being fired is irrelevant to a prospective employer. Leave the excuse at home. Your new employer doesn’t want to hire a whiner. They want to hire a winner who had a bad season! So show them you are a winner and close the deal!

1988cuco wow, I am deeply sorry about that. What I learned from working for a heartless corporation is that when you file a harassment complaint, you’re a trouble maker. They will always favour management over a subordinate. You must get witnesses to back you up. That’s what I did, and finally my bully manager was sacked.

As of a recent update she did the same to another employee and more complaints of harassment against her made. The company fired her and karma was served. Now when I answer prospective employers I just say It was a cultural and change in management .

F that. Tell them you we're laid off as part of a'reduction in headcount' RHC. Most employers can't handle the truth and oftentimes you're not just explaining yourself to HR but someone else indirectly that may not give it their all batting for you.

On a previous job we were given the task of deleting 1 account from a very massive database and the difference between success and getting fired was just 1 click of the mouse. Yes, 1 person had failed resulting in deleting an entire account which was in the area of mass transportation.

I got fired just today because I was locked out of my workplace building while I was on break. And then when I tried to get back in the security lady wouldn’t let me back in. It really sucks man. I came in late on my first day too because I’m in a bit of a housing crisis. Literally the night before my first day I was scoping out potential places to sleep for the night.
