I'm just starting at KerrysKamp this week, but had a question. For the 5 and 1 are you still riffing on the 6 minor pentatonic or are you changing to root major or major pentatonic?
@GreenGuitarNerd
@GreenGuitarNerd 3 года назад
the 6 minor and the 1 major are the same scale just starting on a different note - so you can stay in the same position, but need to target the notes of the chord that is going on at the time. Same thing works with pentatonics

Hi Kerry, good stuff. Question.. when you do those riffs (solo notes) can you do them slower and explain which fret and string you’re hitting as to learn the pattern? Thanks in advance!

General question for Kerry or others -- Is there a simple way to figure out what key you're in? In some cases it seems clear, but in others - like when the "one" isn't in the progression - it can be hard to figure out. I wonder if I'm missing a devise or "trick" to find the key. Any help is appreciated. Also, love the videos! Has opened up my playing knowledge quite a bit. Thanks!
@jschoma11
@jschoma11 3 года назад
Yeah man here you go. If there are 2 major chords "in a row" in the progression, for example C major to D major, those are the 4 and the 5 respectively. This means key of G. There are 3 major chords in the key, but ONLY the 4 and 5 are "neighbors" like that. Additionally, if there are 2 minor chords a full tone apart or in a row as I said above, such as G minor and A minor, they will be your 2 and your 3. So that means F major is your key here. Again, there are three minor chords per key, but ONLY the 2 and 3 are "neighboring" minor chords. Apologies for the layman's terms but I hope people of all levels of theory knowledge understand what I'm trying to say here.

@@jschoma11 that is the golden nugget!!! Thank you. That type of information with practice turns into applied knowledge. Thanks again for answering that question using laymen’s term, such as “in a row”. Or back to back. Just cool.

I can use this. Thanks. I understand the Nashville Numbering System, but don’t have it memorized. Also recognize all these chords, but I’m not so familiar with them. Could use some help with the notes you add between the chords.

Hi Kerry, why u used 4 while u said your playing 2,5,1. What is the function of that 4. Thank you
@Kerry2smooth
@Kerry2smooth 3 года назад
That’s the progression in the song that why I when you the 4
@kingmark4u07
@kingmark4u07 3 года назад
The 4 adds tension to the progression that makes you want to resolve back to the 2. Think of playing the 2-5-1 for the full length of the song, eventually it will get boring and you’re gonna want to add some “flavor”(tension) to help break up the monotonous progression. If you don’t feel comfortable playing the 4, you could also change up the strumming/picking/speed of the progression to give it some depth.
