I'm a real estate photographer and I often get asked to do side gigs like this. I had seen this tutorial before but I rewatched it yesterday right before shooting an engagement on the beach and this video really got me squared away for prep. Huge recommendation.

At .56 seconds, I thought it said a 70-200 F/4 was used, but then it was mentioned that you were shooting at 2.8. either way, the shots were nice. I like a 70-200 lens, but a 135 portrait is my favorite. Thanks for sharing!

Ya, i think we goofed on lens description. This was the 70-200 f/2.8

Thanks for watching! What's your favorite focal length for portraits?
@Revan89

Totally agree. I use 35 for the same reason. It makes you feel you are in there. And also the 85 for the compression that usually helps at cleaning the background.

#1 is 85. #2 is 35. Then have fun with 135, 100 and 200

Favorite focal length for portrait is 85mm, followed closely by 135mm. Anything under 50mm is not flattering for a human portrait because of the distortion. If you are shooting wide to get a whole scene like a busy street with a model in it, I don’t consider that a portrait.

I like being in the action too. I was doing rehearsal and theatre show photography business and being in the action moment is fun and impactful.

Pye's instruction and skills are always spot on. I'd like to see more of his photography challenges. He squares off with a couple buddies and they both shoot the same model in a similar location. They meet up after and see who got the best shot. It's not just the competition I enjoy. I like to see three different pespectives of the same model in the same environment. Good Stuff Adorama

I knew you were going to praise a wide angle after reading the title :). In my opinion a tight focal length is more suitable for a static scene which contains minimum action, wheres a wide angle focal length is more dynamic and shows action. So my lens of choice is Sigma 24-35 F2. It is backed up by 50 1.8G.

I love this. In-the-action photos are images I've always felt drawn to. I've tried to reproduce them but didn't experiment enough to figure out how. I love immersive imagery, thank you for the tutorial 🤙

Another really helpful video! I like how you described the balance between background compression (which you get being further away) vs. capturing the feel “in the moment” when you are up close. Always a hard decision but your thought process was helpful

Super informative as always. Occasionally I catch myself with tunnel vision - always wanting to opt for the 70-200 approach. Adding these considerations to my repertoire. Cheers!

Beautiful composition, I noticed how dark the subject looked against the backdrop, and hate having to fix in post production. Is this the preferred method? Or is there a way to shoot and have proper exposure for the background and subject? Thx
@onlysublime
@onlysublime 2 года назад
If you want you do that, you need to add lights to balance out the bright sun. The lights won't wash out the background but will light your subjects

Do flash tutorial. How to shoot, outside, at different times of the day, especially using a flash at early, mid, and late evening. Next, do different types of flash modifiers like, direct vs, beauty dish vs soft boxes, etc. It all should be focused for the one man operation and should be very mobile.

I noticed they took a small step back at 4:16, maybe they were feeling that you were too close. I've heard that can be a good thing if you want kind of uncomfortable pictures, like street photography, and not so good for portraits. Of course, these look awesome so I'm sure that feeling didn't last. I'm also noticing how you seem to bend forward, and thinking of how my back hurts when I take pictures. In one way, photography has been good for my back, because it gets me out and moving and even bending and stuff, but I've realized that I tend to bend to the right, so sometimes my back starts to freeze up on the right. Thanks for the video, very cool, hopefully if I ever do portraits again I'll feel more confident using my basic kit lens.

Thanks for the great tutorial. I see you're always underexposing the subjects .. doesn't it introduce too much noise when you're lifting up the shadows ?

i've always been a compressed background lover, maybe it's the reason I don't own a 35mm. I would've done this shoot with an 85mm

I do never force dutch angles - when they happen and I see that it works for that particular shot i just leave it as it is.
