I've been flirting with slide guitar on and off for years - I love listening to Duane Allman - but every time I try it sounds like Hawaiian psychedelic death music and the dogs leave home and the cat stares at me and my wife gives me cold food and my daughter avoids me in the street. But your video has inspired me to have another go. Sorry folks and animals.

I used to have the SAME problem. But if you follow his advice and go slow, you'll get it. But you have to raise the action for sure, and I'm speaking from experience. Also heavier gauge strings will help, like 12 or 13's. Muting is a big deal also that will help you greatly. So try to make sure you mute with one of your fingers behind the slide and make sure you're comfortable. Also, use the palm and the side of your right hand. That will help too. Using a pick or your fingers is totally personal preference. A lot of pro's use a pick too, so don't forget that!! If they can use a pick, then you can use a pick. If you're use to using a pick and it helps you get better at slide and it helps you focus on your left hand, then do it. You can always switch to your fingers later on. But I feel that getting your technique and sound correct is what's important. So go slow and don't get frustrated. I'm only sharing with you what I did to help me get better at slide and what my guitar teacher taught me. So I hope this helps somehow.

Tip for guitarists: how do you get something to become second nature and not think about it? Practice..SLOW AND PERFECT..eventually your body programs the movements to become more efficient and muscle memory takes over..speed comes with perfect repetition. Enjoy!

That works a bit, but it really helps to ALSO go too fast for yourself. Drives your progress I've found. But swap it with very slow and perfect playing to get the mechanics clean.

If you're interested why the major third sounds better with slide: read Harmonic Experience by W.A. Matthieu. It has to do with our equal temperament tuning system vs just intonation. It also explains why a major third get's that 'crunch' which Ariel is experiencing. That moment where it is 'just' right. Happy learning!

Love the tone of Ariel's guitar! Timely video since I just dusted off an unused acoustic in my basement and strung it up for slide playing. You can buy a little device that goes over the nut of the guitar that REALLY raises the action, and I put one of those on. Don't have to worry about hitting frets that way, but it def makes it impossible to fret a string. Tradeoffs! Thanks for the video! Good tips, and inspires me to sound as good as Ariel!

I find that once you understand the slide is a moving fret, so that to get the same note as a fretted note it has to contact the string pretty much dead over that fret, it is much better to listen to the note to get the pitch right. You are almost always sliding up into each note so you have a little time to get it right. Like a lot of guitar playing, its a feel thing. When playing intervals against an open or fretted note you will probably tend to correct the intonation of the slide note to a perfect interval rather than the equal tempered intervals you get when playing only fretted notes.

Ariel is like the sexy wolfman of slide guitar. Great video with lots of useful insights into slide playing. It's so hard to combine the elements that make slide sound really good. Playing in tune/getting the note to the right pitch, not fretting out, muting the other strings, nice vibrato. Almost like starting over on guitar.

I like to use a glass slide that is just tight enough to stop at the first knuckle of my little finger. That allows me to bend that finger in order for me to use the curvature of my hand. I have noticed from looking at as many photographs as I cam of the old blues players that most of them do that too. Also, it's important to know that damping technique in important.

I enjoy playing slide. I too use the slide on my pinky finger. I also use just standard tuning. Using my pinky gives me more freedom to play chords. So far, my favorite "slide" is not a slide at all. It's a NAPA #NT1220 5/8 socket. It's a 12 point standard socket, not a deep socket. It's a fairly short socket, so I can't cover more than maybe 3 strings. Don't know if they still make that socket, but being a retired truck mechanic, I already had the socket.

That was good. I screw around a lot on my dobro. I'll have to try some of these other riffs once I get the action lowered a bit. Stock the strings are so high wouldn't dream of trying to finger out chords here. Another trick I use personally if you don't want to raise the action on your electric guitar. Take a pack of rolling papers and slide them under the strings at the first fret to slightly raise your action.

I just keep my action higher in the first place. It sounds better imo, and I play slide in standard tuning mostly, so I like to be able to put on the slide whenever I feel like it. I don't want to change guitars or the tuning. I'd like to be able to switch to slide in the middle of a jam, or start on slide and then switch to normal playing. I also use a pick actually, and do kind of a hybrid picking thing. I mute the lower strings with the flesh of my thumb, and grab the higher strings with my free picking hand fingers. The last thing helps a lot with the pick I find.

@bigboyblue88
@bigboyblue88 5 лет назад
@@fenderbender1515 I agree, I like to have a collection. For me, everything about Slide/Steel is a long term journey. What I mean is, if I buy some piece of kit for slide, say a slide or fingerpicks, I have to use it for a while before I know whether I like it or not. And some things, I used for many years, then one day started fiddling around with a different piece of gear, or without a piece, and never changed back. I am also a HUGE believer in play the melody, "less is more" and keep it pretty, beautiful with slide, definitely not a speed contest and legato by nature

Great video Justin. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the series. I play slide on a Danelectro 56-U2 with a high action and a set of Newtone Michael Messer Electric Slide Classics 13-52 gauge. Newtone also make a 15-56 set but that would probably rip the bridge out (the Achilles heel of the original Danos). I like a heavy slide (4 oz) and have one in steel and one in brass which I wear on my ring finger, a trick I learned from Michael Messer. I also learned the trick about using the tip of the slide for soloing from Michael. If you are thinking about doing a lesson on acoustic slide, you should get Michael along. He's got a couple of great tuition videos on acoustic slide and lap steel guitar. Keep up the good work!
