Now we are getting started with the Dynon Avionics install! This is the fun part. I've just spent all day designing and building a rack to mount the avionics. I've also mounted the Garmin 175 GPS tray in the top of the panel. Now it's time to install the panel, and figure out where everything goes!
Do you all like these shorter update videos better than the usual 15 minute videos? These are quicker and easier for me to produce, so I think I'll start making shorter video but posting more often.

Completely blown away by this panel and cockpit as a whole! The layout, materials, equipment, etc, so very clean and organized. WOW!

Thank you! There’s a lot of thought and planning that goes into that. I also made full size paper cut outs of everything so I could play with the locations before I actually cut holes.

I spent 90 percent of my time early on just thinking and debating with myself on how to build my panel. Then I make a mock up with templates and found that what I thought was perfect, had to be scrapped and redone. It was a learning experience for me, and I posted it on my RU-vid channel which is under my name. Love your updates and progress videos. Cheers from Winnipeg.

Peter I’m not sure if you saw a video I posted some time ago but when I first was planning the panel I printed out full size pics of all the components that go in the panel. With the paper cutouts I could move things around and get a good look at how things would fit before I cut any actual holes in the aluminum.
@challenger2ultralightadventure
@challenger2ultralightadventure 2 года назад
@@KitplaneEnthusiast I did see that, and learned a few things from watching it. I sort of did the same, but when I went to dry fit before I made any holes, I found I had a clearance issue with the radio. I covered that in my video where I reveal my new glass panel in my ultralight. Which proves that even with all the planning, sometimes you have to be prepared to roll with it and make changes.

@@GlensHangar Are you allowed to install the avionics yourself being a certified airplane, or does an avionics shop have to do the install?
@GlensHangar
@GlensHangar 2 года назад
@@KitplaneEnthusiast Because it's certified (here in Canada anyway) I can have any AME with an M1 license install it. My AME is an M1 so he'll be doing the work, but I'm allowed to do the grunt labour under his supervision. So in the end I'll be doing most of the install, with Chris looking over my shoulder and giving advice and inspecting each stage before we move on. Ultimately he needs to be satisfied with my work to sign off on the logbooks. This is the first installation of a Dynon Certified system in Canada, since they only just gained certification here. Most sane people would just drop their airplane off at an Avionics shop and pick it up a few weeks later... but what's the fun in that?

I envy your space behind the firewall. My Sonex Waiex has a fuel tank about 11" in front of the panel. It gets kinda crowded when you do a Skyview HDX. I opted for a IPAD on the right and that allowed some extra space but my hands are still pretty scarred up from the battle. Nice job on yours!

Hi mark, I personally prefer the longer 30 minute videos. I prefer it when you get into details. Thanks also for not engaging in the drama. Some people thrive on it and seek it out. Life is complicated enough. I come here to get away from the unnecessary B.S. Ant particular reason you aren’t using rivnuts instead of nutplates where it wouldn’t batter if there was a stand-off? I just haven't got there yet. I do know where the aileron servo will be located, but I'm still trying to figure out the elevator servo!
@jefish
@jefish 2 года назад
I've been playing with this idea: under the pilot seat, as far aft as possible, cut a 1" hole in the tunnel sidewall to insert the servo arm into the tunnel. Mount the servo to the tunnel sidewall so the motor is under the seat, actuator arm is inside the tunnel. Run link from servo arm to a point somewhere on the lower control stick horn. But it's possible that the angle on the rod ends will be too great when at full left stick.

I really wanted to like my Dynon D3, portability and price seemed spot on. But it just never worked well for me in either rotary or fixed wing aircraft. The attitude display would often bobble and become unstable in smooth air level flight. Dynon offered exceptional customer service, but ultimately we could not resolve what I was experiencing.

"Thinking and Staring" is something I have truly mastered thus far in my Cruzer build. I follow your videos very closely as they are so helpful. In prior videos, you had made reference to "painting" the cabin frame, and now I note you are stating "powder coat". Since I am still deciding which way to go, I am curious if this something you changed your mind on, or if you intended to powder coat the frame all along. Thanks Mark.
@KitplaneEnthusiast
@KitplaneEnthusiast 2 года назад
I was originally planning on priming and painting because I wanted the frame green. But now I have too much stuff to move in the hangar to paint so it’s just easier for me to get it powder coated. I still think it will look good in the same satin black to match the rudder pedals and seat frames. I’m still deciding if I want the panel grey or black.

Mark, I know you have used PTI primer in the past, are you still happy with that primer? Was the paint gun cleanup easy, what did you use to clean gun with? I'm using Stewart Systems mostly because "eco" reasons but results are not easily achieved, what top coat will you be using eventually?
@KitplaneEnthusiast
@KitplaneEnthusiast 2 года назад
Scott the primer is from SPI. It's a two part epoxy primer that I'm very happy with and will use again on the Super Duty. I clean the gun with the primer's thinner. I'm using Utech U500 for the top coat and that is the green you see on the inside of the plane. The outside will use the same color/paint. I have personally never once heard anyone talk about good results with SS paint!
@scottroberts5625
@scottroberts5625 2 года назад
Thanks Mark, I realized that it was SPI after I hit the send button, I may try out the SPI paint before I get too deep, I have only painted some small parts so far with SS that go on the inside of the cockpit so it's still not too late before I paint the outside of our RV14A project.

Hey Mark been watching your build/s with interest over the last 2yrs, liking the tutorials, very informative. Two questions if you have time to answer? 1/ With your radio - do you have to take into account the radio's mounting location due to potential magnetic / electrical interference when the radio is being used to transmit ? 2/ Other than the back up batteries, do the electronic units have an internal heat dissipation (heatsink) - with the manufacturer suggesting - 'preferentially" mount orientation - say inverted or - not? Cheers Glenn. DownUnder.

where does zenith come up with the 400 to 500 hour build times for the ch 750 ,,, is that realistic ? never built a plane before but consider myself somewhat mechanically inclined ,,, thanks
@KitplaneEnthusiast
@KitplaneEnthusiast 2 года назад
I've always felt that the number the manufacturer comes up with as far as hours to build, is worthless. Everyone builds at a different pace and has different standards for their build. It takes time to debur holes and polish the edge of every piece of aluminum. It takes time to remove part number labels and prime parts. If you just want to take parts out of the crate and rivet them together, you can probably build the airframe in 4-500 hours. But you also have to add hundreds (or thousands) of hours for engine installation, panel and wiring, and finishing and paint.
