Getting Started with LibreOffice Writer 

Thank you so much. You are a great teacher. I'm 62 years old so learning this stuff is difficult for me. You made it very understandable.

Incredible content. Since I switched from engineering to management, I unfortunately come across a lot of docx and odt. I never bothered to learn writer, impress or calc really and more or less fooled around doing changes in documents. This quick rundown is perfect to quickly show me the way around. All it takes now is to practice a bit on upcoming documents until I grow the proper routine. Quick rundowns can - if done properly - save a lot of time in learning. And this one is incredibly well done. Thanks a lot and thumps up from a happy viewer.

Thank you ...wow...that's alot of info... my girlfriend just lost her Word app and rather that spend $$$ we installed Libre Office ... I had no idea how much there was to this software. Thank you.

You did a great job there! You covered a goodly amount of stuff in quite a short time. I have just switched from W7 to Mint 20, so I have just switched from Office to Libre Office, and I find there are a few more formatting discrepencies than you have reported finding, but no big deal. I often save what I make as a PDF before I share it anyway, so it's not a show-stopper. Thanks.

I know some of it, don't need to go back too far, but what I don't know needs explaining slowly and clearly. I'm an old person. I'm trying to get books published. One thing I couldn't do was get page numbers entered and in order. They were all jumbled up! I'll also need to put the author's name in a header on one page and the title of the book in a header on opposite page. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

I really need to start making fuller use of the various different features in LibreOffice, as there’s a lot more to it than I realised!

I have an impression that LibreOffice Writer works as well as Microsoft Word. Last year, I upgraded from Microsoft Word 2019 to Microsoft Word 2021, the Microsoft Office 2021 suite. The menus in Writer are very good. I enjoy the way you work with the various features and controls in the application program. Your show was excellent. I hope to watch you teach Calc.

Thank you very much for the excellent tutorial. I've been away from my WP for a number of years and have become rather rusty! Indeed, the last version of Libreoffice I used started with 5. Your easy, informative style certainly blasted through quite a lot of the functions. You have a new subscriber! I'll look forward to checking out your other tuts. Anyhow, Like so many other baby-boomers, I started with Wordperfect - blue screen, no mouse, no menu - and then moved on to use MS Word along with the rest of the world. I actually bought the 2003 student version and used it until it was no longer supported. That's when I switched to Open Office. Frankly, I couldn't really see much difference in use - apart from the regular glitches regarding MS Word compatibility. With Libreoffice now in version 7, the compatibility issues seem to have gone away, and the application looks very polished. Once again, much obliged!

Thank you for this, it takes a step out of my workflow when I use Scrivener. It means I don't have to open the compiled document in LibreOffice to get the bibliography list, then open it in Word to send it off to my co-authors.

Even after years this is so useful, I wish I could go back then in time and relive all these years again having my present consciousness

I like libreoffice. I use it. I've also been able to use language writing functions that aren't in English. So it works well. You mentioned something about this in the beginning with someone having trouble with it.

You are the SAVANT of office software. I downloaded Libre because of not wanting to deal with Microsoft Office and monthly charges and whatever else Microsoft throws at you. Besides I only need to write a letter occasionally or open something. Now I need to duplicate what you did to help get it through my thick skull.

How did you get that dark theme? I loved it.

Dear Jaco. My laptop was stolen in an armed robbery. I live in South Africa you know and this kind of happening is the national sport - unfortunately. I am busy with a novel in Afrikaans. I used to Microsoft, but could buy it due financial constrains. I downloaded Libre. The reviews are good in general so I decided to use it. I am 57 and have very limited computer literacy. Afrikaans are a Germanic language, hence a lot of punctuation are alike. I opened the symbols on the toolbar but non of the needed symbols are available. What do I do to go to an advanced symbols to fit the needs, or is that what Libre offers? I also went to Google to use the Alt alternative. For example "Alt 0232" will give me an 'e' with a umlaut (e with an accent). Please be to my assistance and advise me.

I have been using this for a while, so I know most of what I needed to, but this was helpful. Would have saved me a bit of a learning curve if I had watched it to begin with, but I never do things the easy way.

I am working on a recipe book with two text panels per page and sometimes the icon tool changes and will only do the text box not the text inside the box. How do I get the icon back to change the text?

The biggest drawback is compatibility, adoption & excel.

Question for you. Microsoft word/office 365 has a document translation function. I wanted to ask if Libreoffice has this? I may need this feature but don't want to go back to anything microsoft or windows if there's a way to avoid it. libreoffice is also a wonderful product.

When I try to INSERT a TABLE (number of rows, columns etc, ) what I get in the area where the cells should be is a solid gray 'block' in my document. What am I doing wrong?

Good video! Do you use any other programs on the LibreOffice suite other than Writer or Base like Calc or Impress? If so could you consider doing a "Getting Started" video on those too? Another, what is the "Safe Mode" option? And finally, do you know how to change the encoding for certain documents? For example, if I have a document with a different kind of encoding and open it in Microsoft Word, Word will automatically ask me what kind of encoding and give me a list of different encoding for it before actually opening the file. In LibreOffice it just opens the file to gibberish.

I just recently downloaded LO 7.0.3 and start opening and saving documents from all over -- DOWNLOADS, ONEDRIVE, MSWORD ONLINE ETC. I came upon your video while looking for answers to PDF downloads attempts to open where dialog asks for password. I never setup one, so I have no Idea whose or what to enter. I know that's a little more advanced than what you covered here and I am definitely glad to have come here and retrieve this one. However, I do need to understand how to correct my situation that brought me here. Thanks for whatever you can share.

I recently had to buy a new laptop as my previous Windows laptop was seizing up so much and this time I bought a Chromebook instead. I have only just started to use Libreoffice and it is very good. I just need to get my head around it and watch a lot of videos on this.

I often receive manuscripts in one long file. I recently found out that Microsoft Word has the ability to break down a manuscript into separate chapters, can Libre Writer do the same?

When I create a 'template' in LibreOffice Writer, it will not hold the features I select, such as indents, spacing, and others. Cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. Does anyone know how to to get the grammar checker working? It can detect simple errors like an extra consecutive "the", but not anything more complex like "their", there and "they're" used incorrectly in a context, even though there's no ambiguity about which should be used. For instance if I type "There going home", it doesn't detect the error.

Is there any way to make it ALWAYS default to web view? The scroll bar shifts on me otherwise and each time I open any document, I have to reset to web view.

my cursor keeps jumping to the top of the page where the first heading is every time i click somewhere into the text or headings of the first page of the document, but only if I do it on the left side of the page, not when I click somewhere on the right side of the page. It's as if there is an invisible border that goes down from top to bottom of the document. This is so strange and I've no clue why? ....help! :-)

Thank you very much. I'm trying to format a very short ebook for KDP. When I saved 2 pages in HTML I got a message saying it may not work properly, should save in odf text. But KDP will not accept that. Another problem is the BOLD, HIGHTLIGHT etc, It's hard to turn on and off.

I'm using libreoffice to write a journal, and I'm writing another document using copy and paste from the internet. I'm having trouble on both documents with the paragraphs shifting to other pages, and in some cases when try to fix the problem, it makes it worse. I've been stuck trying to fix the problem for a while now, and it's gotten the point, I'm ready the delete them both. What am I doing wrong?

Nice video. I must admit to using WPS (...I know, shoot me) but that's through laziness and not taking the time to give LibreOffice a fair chance. Older version in my distro (Debian) so I'll take a look at the snap.

Here's my problem. I've had LibreOffice Writer for many years, since the early days. Then I just upgraded to the latest Ubuntu version, along with the new LibreOffice node. Surprise! With the upgrade, I can no longer copy and paste text in a document. It's broke. Whereas I can still copy text from a website and past it into a LibreOffice Writer document. I can't find a fix for this. I have a feeling that it's unstable.

I need to SELECT every other row / line (separated with a cr/lf so I can change the color of the text all at once. This is for a music chord sheet where the chords are on separate lines. So far I have not found a way to do that. The method of doing one line at a time is prohibitively time consuming. Any ideas?

Terrific tutorial! What I don't get clearly is how to format a document that is already typed into Libre. How to draw the paragraphs together and eliminate the often large white spaces between them, with a few short keystrokes. If I cleared the formatting, would I lose anything or would the paragraphs remain as paragraphs that cold easily be re-formatted? Thanx much!

I learned old DOS word processors back in the day and used WordPerfect quite a bit. I've been using Microsoft products off and on since then and of course font/text/color/bold etc. are options found even on web platforms. I used Open Office too but here's the thing. I'm not a power user or even a frequent user of word processors but Writer is not intuitive in the least it's UI many times is contradictory often opting for the hidden default than the offered options. This may be a symptom of open source development but still a major draw back. Just a quick example : You want to download and print the quick reference sheet they offer in their help section. You do, doesn't fit wasted ink and kind of irritating that you didn't pay attention it seem ok in the tiny preview window but totally user error can't expect it to just correct my errors automatically or even prompt me of an incompatibility right? So, lets try again. Preview looks good let's take a closer look. Oh I see it's trying to print to A4 and my printer is loaded with letter size, drop down box select and print. What no change... Let's look online come across this great video but need to keep looking, then some testy power users on a forum degrade someone inquiring about the same issue I'm suffering from. The solution is that the option to change the layout when you print is ignored and you need to know that you need to change the layout on the page setup hmmm? Guess need to be part of the clic to get that memo.
