As Lead, find the secondary defender asap & process the play letting the play SDF. Here, Lead was in good position & did everything right, but I disagree with the call. Defender gets in LGP prior to shooter leaving the floor. Although the defender moved his right foot to line up with his body, his left foot was stationary before the shooter left the floor. For PC, we always like the contact to be in the chest, with the shooter going straight thru the defender, however, defender here takes sufficient contact despite the shooter trying to slip by him. Since defender did nothing wrong, & was in LGP when contact occurred, in my judgment this is a Player control foul. Close call.

I would agree. The Defender obtained LGP. Very close though. I have a player control foul here.

Well-said. Tough call, but I also thought it was PC. And it seems to support my theory that if a block-charge looks really close with the naked eye, 80%+ of the time, it's a player control foul (confirmed by watching in slow mo).

To clarify, it sure looks like defender had two feet on ground facing the ball handler (i.e. "Legal guarding position"), before he went airborne. Defender got to the spot first, then ball handler went airborne (a fraction of a second later), and made torso/chest contact.

hard to say based off just this one play. i would like to know did we have other similar plays in the game? if so, what were they ruled? did this play fit with the other plays?

The lines on that showcase court are out of control! Holy cow! There are so many lines that there are no lines!

It's close but I have 2 feet on the floor facing the opponent before the second foot leaves the floor and the shooter becomes airborne, charge! Good position, great sell mechanic even though I disagree with the call.

Defender had two feet on the floor facing the opponent before the opponent was airborne. All other lateral and backward movement is ignored. Defender was contacted illegally in the torso after establishing LGP. Charge.

I once read the following in a FB post from John W Adams, former NCAA coordinator of basketball officials: "It’s always been a teaching point of mine: “when in doubt, call a block”. Way less arguing and these plays are way more likely to be blocks than PC fouls or charges. Lots of conditions to be met to draw a charge. Miss 1 of them, it’s a block." This type of block/charge play is extra tough when you have to make a decision whether the guard was legal before the ball handler became airborne. In this YMTC play I believe this to be a PC foul - In real time I see the defender as legal before the shooter was airborne. However, the ability to hit the pause button on the video reveals the defender may have made his position illegal by lifting his right foot (to move it slightly to the right) and not getting it back down before the shooter left the floor. It is SO close and we obviously can't pause the game to confirm the elements of LGP are met with certainty. I see it as PC but I cannot fault anyone who believes it is a block. On a different night, any one of use who saw this exact play might call it differently than we called it here. Regardless, I think the quote from Mr. Adams is still useful - especially the part about the multiple conditions a defender must accomplish to be legal. Miss one and it's a block.

YMTC - I have a Block. Ax planted footed and began elevation before Bx had two feet on ground and position. Good call. Play 3 is my issue play though - Coach calls TO but I don't see a hand up (mechanic) indicated such call; just a bunch of finger pointing. Did I miss something? Thanks for the invaluable content.

On YMTC, block. Defender gets their chest in the way, but doesnt get 2 feet down to establish total LGP. Super close play.

I think your videos are also for players, ciaches and serious fans. The reason for this is two many of the arguments come because of not understanding why a call is made or not made.

Make the call play was a block... although the defense was in good position, he slide over after the offense was in the air for an attempt. Very close but late.

I'm going block. Defender was late getting there and never established legal guarding position on the ball handler (also got a little help from a push off of the post player).

I agree with the call. Defender pushes off A2 and fails to get to a LGP before the shooter A1 is airborne.

Evaluating whether defender was legal prior to shooter was airborne is what this play is all about.
@TheRewindGuam

Very close call. I agree with the block. Defender was still sliding into position when the shooter became airborne.
