Japan is filled with so many real life Ghibli inspirations. This beautiful forgotten dam in the countryside of Shikoku Japan makes that list with ease. By far one of the most beautiful spaces I have seen so far, and it all starts... with a drive

As a megastructure and history enthusiast, I'd love to know when that dam was built. It consists of a row of small arch dams connected by supporting towers, which is a configuration I had never seen before. Even more intriguing is that instead of being completely solid, the towers route spill water through their insides, which is a very surprising choice considering those towers are holding the pressure of all the water behind the dam. It reminds me of Victorian era dams like the Lake Vyrnwy reservoir in Wales.

YT suggested your abandoned island video (batteries) and it was fascinating, then an old abandoned school one (with the tunnel) and at some point I realized I had watched a previous one with the guy that roasts coffee that is close to the village where someone makes llfe-sized dolls... I had watched those 3 years ago.... So now I am here, after I got curious about what you are doing these days -- and this adventure did not disappoint either. Your enthusiasm and delight in the "small things" along the way is infectious and endearing. :-) BTW, I traveled in Japan in 1981/82 solo as a woman and it was incredible and very safe.

One of your best ideas! Loved this video! This reminds me of the roads where I grew up in Northern California, USA. Woah! That 360 degree turn! That view. Bit of a heart attack with that last car. Everything is so green. I'm so glad you did this. I can hear the water at the dam. I can't tell where the water is coming out of. STAIRS! The footage is beautiful. I got so much more than just a drive. I hope you'll consider doing another driving video. Gorgeous view of the lake. Those beautiful purple or pink flowers! I see where the water is coming out of the dam now. So nice. Peaceful. As always, much love from the Southern California Desert. 🏜 ❤

The drive was somewhat terrifying but beautiful. The dam was a great find, and the only reason I can guess of is that the other visitors didn't have half the stamina that you have Norm, or they were repeat visitors, or really scared of snakes. Hence didn't walk the stairs.

My 3 winters in Japan, I had 4km of road to open every morning in a snowcat. Most mornings there was 50Cm - 1m of fresh snow. On the bridges I had 5cm of clearence each side in a 4.8m wide vehicle, with a moderate snowpack I regularily had 1m+ of overhand on one side. Oh 90% of the road no guard rail. The guard rail was normaly under 2m of snow if there was any.

It is a concrete reservoir dam with a length of 145.5m and a height of 30.4m. Both ends are gravity-type and the central section is a multiple arch type consisting of five arches and six buttresses. Its pioneering and rare structural form is highly valuable in the history of agricultural civil engineering and demonstrates the level of technological achievement in dam construction in the early Showa period. It was designated an Important Cultural Property (Structure) on December 19th, 2006. Construction began in 1926 and was completed in November 1929.

Hi Norm, It's a beautiful area at this location. Funny thing when you spoke about the roads in that area. I like in the northeast of Scotland, and most of our roads are like that. The best road is an A route. Most are B and single track, and like you said, when on them, you always meet a speed demon that scares the crap out of you. Keep up the great content.😊
