I never even noticed until now that Togosa is wearing an earpiece because he doesn’t have a cybercom. The director did a fantastic job of being faithful to each character.

Actually he’s supposed to have implants.
@LabTech41
@LabTech41 Год назад
@@uptown710 There's varying degrees of augmentation in that world, and there are still people who aren't augmented at all. I believe, and I suppose it would depend on whether we're talking about the anime movie, the anime series, or the movie, but I believe when he first started out he was completely human, but he subsequently added basic cyberbrain augs, because otherwise he'd be borderline useless for section 9. He's by a wide margin the least augmented of the group.

The revolver Togusa is using is a Chiappa Rhino 60DS, which was designed by the same Italian that designed the Mateba. It fires from the lower cylinder, which gives it much less muzzle flip when fired. It also lends It looks as cyber-retro, so it's a perfect fit for Togusa's analog character in a futuristic world ;)

The rhino has been out for a few years now and most of us are familiar with it. I found it was a bit too clunky for my tastes but given how they tried to stay within the source material. The Mateba was featured in Trigun as Vash’s main gun. And you mean the Rhino fires from the lower barrel. They were also used in the divergent series. Arimaki runs a S&W 586 or 686 plus here. I counted 7 shots which means a 586 or 686 Smith and Wesson. Though I definitely think arimaki has heavily customized and personalized his sidearm given the Samuri cut wood grips.

Hmm.... :/ You should see the original Ghost in the Shell (Remastered is called Ghost in the Shell 2.0, but it's the 1995 release). The team who made this movie appear to have fundamentally missed the point of GitS, plot-wise.

@code-dredd
@code-dredd 6 лет назад
SikeSplitter *> They haven't fundamentally missed the point of GitS.* Yeah, they actually did. The point of GitS is _not_ a "they stole my identity" plot recycle; in a simplified/summarized way, it's about what life _is_ (e.g. Project 2501 arguing that it was "alive", even though it was only an AI) and Kusanagi trying to find out if she _really_ was a real human with a soul (i.e. "ghost") or just another system that managed to "auto-generate" its own "ghost", hence her determination to "dive in" into the system that had been under Section 6's custody to find out if it _really_ had a ghost or if it simply was an empty 'shell'. So, yes, I think they _did_ miss the point, because this was simply another recycled plot rehash that significantly dumbed down the movie, for the sake of majority appeal. *> You should never watch the remastered version of GitS 1995 it's the same as the original with some ugly CGI.* It is _obvious_ that it's the same as the 1995 release. No one claimed otherwise, so I wonder what you think you're replying to. Leaving the questionable use of CGI, in _some_ scenes only, the rest of the scenes that don't have CGI were also remastered and do look better. And BTW, I _didn't_ say that you should watch the remastered version _and avoid_ the 1995 release. People should watch both, tbh.

+code_dredd That is still a part of the movie though. The Major is still questioning whether or not she really was human, the conversation with her and Batou on the boat is exactly the same as from the original film. Remembering her past is something she does in the 2nd GIG of SAC, it's a re purposing of that plot to mesh with the stuff from the original film and their original ideas. This isn't a remake of the original film. It's like a combination of it with a lot of SAC and some original ideas. There's concepts like human collectivism taken from SAC that add to the idea of humans being systems in and of itself that auto-generate their own ghosts. That is the realization Motoko comes to at the end of GitS 1995, and that's what she realizes at the end of this film too. Most of it is SAC and some original concepts like the cyborg memory suppressants (which I will admit is a bit of a simple plot device), the Major is more mature and content with her life in Section 9 like she was in SAC. That's something with SAC I like. The Major appears younger in that series (that doesn't mean much in this universe when you think about it) but she and the plot are logical extensions of the original films ideas. It feels like a sequel to those original ones. The first film is the Major coming to terms with cyberization, Innocence is Batou coming to terms, and SAC is Section 9 helping people come to terms. The Puppet Master was talking about how a change in evolution won't change your fundamental sense of identity, him becoming a part of Motoko's mind wouldn't make "her" go away. She'll just become different, the same way you change when you learn something new. In SAC every character of Section 9 knows this in some way, the full cyborg characters especially. I get the feeling they just kinda shoehorned in original plot elements and homages to this movie for the sake of it when it would have actually been better without that. People were already expecting them to do the Laughing Man with this movie because of his mass appeal. Go full on memetic with it they were clearly thinking about doing that. Wouldn't be surprised if Kuze was the Laughing Man early in development and they changed it later on of course putting more emphasis on his back story with Motoko. Whatever you think of the 2017 GitS, you should just avoid the remaster of the 1995 film. It's bad and pointless: www.ign.com/articles/2009/12/03/ghost-in-the-shell-20-blu-ray-review I'm not a fan of IGN and the writer seems to not care so much for the philosophy of the film, but he's bang on in his critique of the release. I've watched it I own it on blu-ray and compared to the 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-Ray it really sucks balls.

SikeSplitter *> That is still a part of the movie though.* You're right, but I think they changed the focus from the deeper philosophical issues such as "what is life?", "what makes you human?" if an AI can act in ways that appear to be "indistinguishable" from actual humans, and so on. To me, the main failure was at that fundamental level. *> The Major is still questioning whether or not she really was human, the conversation with her and Batou on the boat is exactly the same as from the original film.* Off the top of my head, I don't remember how closely the boat conversation in the 2017 film resembles the 1995 version of it (e.g. was it directly quoted, paraphrased in some way that could change meanings in subtle ways, something else?) However, in the 1995 release, I think the key conversation is not the one in the boat, but the one in the elevator. I'm not saying that the boat conversation is not important; I'm saying that the one that lets you see what the movie is ultimately/fundamentally about, is the elevator scene. Unfortunately, and this may be where things got off to a bad start, but the _trailers_ may've actually setup the movie for failure in my mind, since it tried to be very explicit about the "they stole your identity" rehash. If you look at the 2017 GitS plot, it resembles the 2014(?) RoboCop remake more closely in many areas, even to the point where the 'scientist'/mentor figure is tasked with 'disposing' of the main character --a completely (IMHO) unnecessary side-arc/story that had no reason to be there. *> Remembering her past is something she does in the 2nd GIG of SAC, it's a re purposing of that plot to mesh with the stuff from the original film and their original ideas.* I understand that, but unless I'm missing something, I'm not really convinced that the people who dealt with it had a good grasp of the fundamental points the 1995 release had made. Maybe the fact that I started to see parallels with RoboCop, in addition to the trailer issues I mentioned, kind of did a disservice to the film in my mind. I should probably watch it a second time to see if I become more lenient, but I sort of doubt that. *> Most of it is SAC and some original concepts like the cyborg memory suppressants (which I will admit is a bit of a simple plot device)* Just like RoboCop... and Equillibrium :/ *> the Major is more mature and content with her life in Section 9 like she was in SAC.* I got the opposite impression in SAC, maybe because Kusanagi appears a lot more expressive in SAC than in the original release, though to be fair, the original deviated from the manga in that sense, so perhaps the Major's portrayal in SAC has more fidelity relative to the original manga. The part that I disliked about SAC was mostly the fact that they (IMHO) tainted it with unnecessary "fan service". This series does not need fan service and, IMHO, the fact that they had Kusanagi constantly in what seemed like a bathing suit just to "show skin" made me upset. Outside of a comedy genre, I tend to see that as a cheap way to get viewers, and it produces a negative reaction on my part. (Think of having female models on.... food ads, b/c "sex sells", but it comes at a cost.) *> The first film is the Major coming to terms with cyberization, Innocence is Batou coming to terms, and SAC is Section 9 helping people come to terms.* I don't think I agree. Kusanagi has been like for her entire life, basically, so in the first film she's coming to grips with the very real posibility that the AI claiming to be alive actually has a "ghost" in there somewhere, which makes her wonder if it's possible for an AI to generate its own ghost, then how could she be certain that she was human and not the same as the AI. This is why the elevator conversation is key, b/c that's when she says that if there's one, then she's "going to find it". Before the elevator conversation, after Kusanagi leaves the meeting, Batou makes a comment to Togusa regarding why everyone appears to be so concerned with the situation. *> The Puppet Master was talking about how a change in evolution won't change your fundamental sense of identity, him becoming a part of Motoko's mind wouldn't make "her" go away. She'll just become different, the same way you change when you learn something new.* Yes, this is the argument that the PM makes to persuade Kusanagi to merge... but nothing of this is part of the 2017 movie at all, IIRC. This is part of the reason I think it's dumbed down, you know, like when you watch SONY's "The Amazing Spider Man" and they need to show the audience a complete animation of the Lizard's "evil plan" to make sure the audience "gets it". I don't appreciate when film makers treat their audience in a condecending manner and/or with contempt regarding their ability to figure out something. If they did they jobs right, then there would be nothing to be confused about, but I digress. *> In SAC every character of Section 9 knows this in some way, the full cyborg characters especially.* I may need to rewatch it, but I don't remember getting this impression. *> I get the feeling they just kinda shoehorned in original plot elements and homages to this movie for the sake of it when it would have actually been better without that.* If you listen to the interviews, prior to the movie's release, they were focusing a _lot_ on the visuals every time they talked about the movie. That's fine. They did a great job with the visuals (though I thought the spider tank seemed a bit thinner), but I thought it was lacking in substance (i.e. story-wise) In addition, the Puppet Master doesn't really have a "face", but they still felt the need to show a generic/forgettable "bad guy"... just like they !@#$ it up with Terminator Genisys and they made a 'character' out of Skynet... *> People were already expecting them to do the Laughing Man with this movie because of his mass appeal.* Whatever it is they wanted to do, it doesn't look like they committed to it 100%. *> I've watched it I own it on blu-ray and compared to the 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-Ray it really sucks balls.* I own both. I saw the 1995 release when it came out in VHS, but hey, VHS doesn't last, so I got the BD that has both (though I don't have any aniversary edition, so I don't know if they made additional changes somewhere). I didn't like the CGI scenes that much (I'm being generous), but the non-CGI work I thought was done properly. I would've had an issue if it had been a remake instead of a remaster. I don't think the remaster version should be 100% avoided anymore than I'm saying that no one should watch the original. People should probably watch the original 1995 release _first_ and then take a look at the remastered version and decide for themselves.

One of the best scenes of the movie, also has alot of small details if you are a GiTS fan. Including the breed of Dog Batou has is the same in GiTS: Innocence (plus its also the same breed as Mamoru Oshii dogs) and Togusa still retains the similar type of Revolver he uses. This movie definitely is one of the better Anime to Hollywood movies out there when it comes to honoring its Source Material.

This movie played it safe, no big stupid changes, but also not taking any risks I say. Overall they glued together a satisfying script from various GitS media. And I say it worked out well, especially compared to the other American remakes of Japanese animes.

Given what we've seen, it's likely a customized 8-shot revolver (which does show up on occasion) based upon the standard Japanese police revolver.
@matthewcaughey8898
@matthewcaughey8898 2 года назад
@@TheTrueAdept actually this gun is a S&W that you can buy right out of the catalog. It’s definitely a .357 magnum and it’s got the distinctive Smith and Wesson shape. No other revolver resembles an S&W there’s also only 7 shots fired which puts this gun into the 686 plus revolver type. The 686 normally has a full underlug but given its non standard barrel length of around 7 inches it makes sense. The 686 also uses the bigger Smith N frame normally used for .44 magnums to hold the extra shot. The grips are definitely full custom as is his leather but this is a gun you could once upon a time order exactly like this. I’ll find a few better screen shots but I can tell you this. If the hammer rests elevated from the back of the gun it’s a pre 2000 Smith and Wesson.

The casting of the secondary Section 9 characters in this movie were bang on. It's a shame they didn't get enough screen time. Instead we got a movie that follows poorly played leads interacting with newly made up and uninteresting characters. The movie may have been called Ghost in the Shell, but the people working on it clearly had no idea what the series was about or what made it interesting in the first place.
@SE_Lin
@SE_Lin 6 лет назад
+darkalman The people working on it clearly watched both the original Oshii films and SAC at the least with all the attention to detail in the characters like Batou's dog, and they took story elements from SAC directly like Kuze. When I realized this was more of a SAC adaptation than the 1995 film it just clicked. I like this film as a big time GitS fan, personally. The only thing I don't like about it (and I'm more mixed than negative on this) is how they didn't portray New Port City in a more grounded post-cyberpunk fashion like the original anime film instead it's like SAC + Blade Runner. Even just how SAC looked with only a few primary distinct colors for lighting (green, blue, gold) would have been better imo. It looks beautiful but I think this movie would have attracted more people if it didn't go for that ultra sleek colorful look, it would have been more distinctive. I don't think the leads were bad, I thought ScarJo's performance in particular was nicely subdued fitting the characterization of the Major in the original film even though they didn't follow that plot it was a nice. You have to understand that they didn't pick ScarJo for any reason but she's a tried and true action star. She's one of the most beautiful women in the world, can do her own stunts and speaks fluent English. The problem with many of the great Japanese actresses that could have played Motoko is not many of them can speak English and if they can it's usually not good enough to be in an English-speaking movie. They could have done the movie in Japanese language but they'd have gotten blasted even harder for "cultural appropriation" or whatever if they did that. I think she looks the part to play the Major from the original film which had a more realistic, grounded character design with similar hair and pigmentation. Motoko's race is left purposefully ambiguous to highlight the theme of cyberization eliminating nations and races and leading into something new for humanity in an evolutionary sense. Moving beyond the bonds of our physical causality. I personally think she looks pretty white in the Oshii films who has admitted he has strong European influences in his works. Look up his film Avalon, Japanese made film with a Polish cast. The lead actress really resembles Motoko. It's one thing if you just really dislike ScarJo's acting but I think the disdain for her performance in this film is unwarranted and largely not even based in the film itself but external feelings on it.

I'm just noticing it now but the revolver still has 6 shots, the reason that it looks like he fired it 8 times was cause they replaying the certain shots twice but from two different angles. Example, the first shot hitting the guy touching the door was done twice and the shot before he shot the crawling dude was also done twice

I feel like little details like using a Chiappa Rhino all add up to make the film feel like less than a full-hearted effort to translate the anime to the big screen. Kind of disappointing, honestly.
