One of my favorite GITS scenes, and a very good episode overall ... though weren't they all? Anything with Run Rabbit Junk playing in the background was great.
I love how the initial explosion caused by the Tachikoma, and the Batou launching a grenade later in the fight, start the music and the chorus respectively.
Full send mag dump by a most likely medium calibre rifle. And not a small one at that. Either that thing has close to no recoil, is very light (probably true, it is the future after all!)… Or Togusa is an absolute animal… (We know that to be true)
@@rowen3337 As far as I remember his brain is partially or even half cybernetic. He needs it for work so they can communicate voiceless and get access to computers. I'd wager to say that I was a requirement of working for Section 9.

Spider Tanks with overwhelming ordinance controlled by an Artificial Intelligence that comes across as adorable and friendly but has an excitable desire to kill. The Japanese just love to create terrifying things.
The reason for having a battalion of think Tanks is really apparent in this episode..! The Tachikomas really are a force to be reckoned with… And really great characters overall! (I mean, just look at 2:55!)
It's entirely too easy to imagine an IRL special-operations unit doing a hostage-rescue drill, possibly led by a mid-level commissioned officer, and noticeable parts of the operation faintly resembling this bit of fiction.
Minor translation mistake In the Japanese dub, when the RPG misses Tachikoma, Saito actually said: 'ATM huh?' rather than 'Heavy artillery' Since Tachikoma it's still categorized as a tank, it got spooked
Major Motoko Kusanagi as Masamune Shirow envisioned her as a very young woman, however character designer and key animator supervisor Hiroyuki Okiura, made her different from her original manga counterpart stating, "...Motoko Kusanagi is a cyborg. Therefore her body is strong and youthful. However her human mentality is considerably older than she looks. I tried to depict this maturity in her character instead of the original girl created by Masamune Shirow....". While born Japanese Kusanagi was involved in an accident at a very young age, as a result she was one of the first recipient of full cybernization. She did not "age" as commonly understood, but instead her titanium brain case was transferred to a larger and more mature frame. As a result she had the freedom to pick and choose her appearance, not fully Asian, not fully European. She is bisexual and has a fascination with dolls, as they depict an unchanging form similar to her own doll like eyes and frame. Because of the incredible cost and expense to upgrade and maintain her prosthetic body she must work for specialized government agencies that can support her. Primarily apolitical, she has a profound sense of justice and is not afraid to take the law into her own hands should such a situation arise. Because of her relationship to and with Project 2501 she has expanded her awareness into the internet continuum and could be considered the first Human / AI hybrid.
What I like about the SAC version of her is that she is allowed to look feminine. That’s not a novelty in Japanese media, but still. She isn’t tomboyish, wears nothing that would hinder her effectiveness, but still decides to go into battle with lipstick applied. It is pretty nice if a series does so much right.
@AndorRadnai That reminded me of the one about makeup being called "war paint". In recent years, we saw a soccer star probably throw her opponents off their game with her bright red lipstick.
I only now noticed the character pairings in the infiltration team were "one heavy operative, one light operative". Kusanagi's the Heavy to Togusa, and Saito's the Light to Batou.
Anybody else notice that the guy Saito 'takes care of' that has the RPG - Saito fires once and we see the guy fall over from a head wound; but there is also an explosion when the camera pans out. This means Saito waited for the guy to fire, shot the RPG and guy's head at the same time. Show off.
@@jansandman6983 Even if Togusa isn't as tricked-out as the Hawkeye-equipped Saito, I could imagine Batou leading the "One of us! One of us!" chant regarding the mulleted detective.
the tachikoma have those voices cause this anime is so badass that it needed to be toned down a bit or everyone would be growing hair in manly places at a rapid rate as you watch the show
3:08 - 3:12 If you listen close and are a fan of american hip hop, you can hear the song go "la la la, la la la, la la," like i've heard in a couple of hip hop tracks of old. Thought that was hilarious. Big fan of Section 9. Want my own Tackikoma!!
Think Tom Clancy, there's a lot of Japanese politics/existentialism/crime drama/combat. You can see how the latest Ghost Recon games seem to roll right from a page of Ghost in the Shell.
This and the one where Togusa makes a deductive leap while Kusanagi somersaults gave me an idea: Perhaps, despite having only the brain extensions, Togusa gets an Ability Boost or "buff" (his "Aha!" and his one-handing an automatic rifle) when he's around the Major.
It is up there with Cowboy Bebop on the epic scale. One of those anime you have to see. Just be warned, like Bebop, it does have a philosophical side to it. I for one enjoyed that along with the action.
But it’s framed so incredibly well. It’s not philosophical for the sake of being deep, but to flesh out the world and characters. I also really enjoy the mundane things like politics and economics being discussed at length. It never gets boring, but makes the world that much more believable.
It would be part of either a gag dub or a rejected script, but I imagine that any one of the Niners could say to another, "You're beautiful when you're kicking ass", getting the reply, "As are you". Naturally, it would either be Chief Aramaki or Major Kusanagi who would say, "You're ALL beautiful".
wish someone could explain this episode to me.. so the old woman is the hostage but they have her so long they think the daughter is her wtf so the bad guys mistaking that allow her (a cyborg) & hostage to become their leader..... of an anti cyborg cult? makes no sense but LOVE THIS SCENE
+FlyingAce1016 So they kidnapped the old woman sixteen years ago to protest the human cybernetics of her fathers company. During that sixteen year period, as a side effect of her cyberization, she aged quickly. The little girl they take into custody is her biological daughter and is now leading the terrorists. So perhaps the moral of this episode is how her father only did this to her to promote his products and how she was kidnapped and made sick because of them. Using children as lab rats/trophies is wrong. But I could be wrong. I never understood this show for years.
Basically what Kusanagi had pass trough, only that the scientist used her as guinea pig because she was going to die otherwise, if the experiment failed and the total cybernization didn't save her life, they wouldn't lose anything because she don't have any family, luckily for her, the experiment work and that saves her life even that she lose everything else.
Missing one small but disturbing thing. After she was kidnapped, she was repeatedly raped by the guerrillas. Eventually, she got pregnant and gave birth. Her daughter was then indoctrinated by the guerrillas from birth, and eventually became their leader. That's why the other agent who tapped into her memories got so messed up. He saw her life as a prisoner was a nightmare, being raped, abused, and even having her own daughter turned against her.
Her father, a wealthy electronics firm CEO, had her cyberized to promote his company’s products. But the procedure had some side effects. Like accelerated aging.
Muhammad Hadi if you mean the team then they are humans with cybernetic parts. The major has everything but her brain as machines. Only Tougasa and all these terrorists pure human.
This anime is so fucking good, i must say the whole bad ass immersion kind of breaks with this fucking "cute" bouncy robot... i wish it was a serious anime without the childish robot crab thingy
Well in the manga, Batou was the one always providing the comic relief, the anime gave him a more serious tone while the Tachikomas provide the comic relief by simply talking.
@@Bluefoxx3 His goofy side has been toned down quite a bit, but the moments we get are so hilariously out of the blue as a result. Definitely a good call. Also, The Tachikomas would not be nearly as memorable and iconic if they weren’t so cutesy.
@@nodinitiative I'm told that in "2nd GiG", the cheesy Gohda makes the observation that the Section 9 team could eventually be overrun by a large number of adversaries
Don’t forget the couple of advanced combat tanks with artificial intelligence and heavy weaponry… and all the restraint of someone yelling Geronimo in a CoD lobby on a regular basis.
