If you have never caught a giant striped bass using a Spook, then you will be in for a surprise when it finally happens for you. The topwater explosion may give you a heart attack.
At 9:45am on Tuesday June 20th 2017, while fishing a beach on Cape Cod in dense fog, my spook-style plug got engulfed by a giant 46.5 inch striper.
Timestamps:
0:20 - intro to the spook lure used in this video
1:50 - big hit! fish on!
3:09 - easing the giant striped bass in close to shore
3:47 - successful lip lock!
4:14 - holding the fish up horizontally for the camera
4:48 - quick measurement at 46.5 inches
5:12 - successful release!
Equipment Used In This Video:
Reel: Van Staal VR175 www.themightyfish.com/product...
Rod: Lamiglas 9' rated for 1-3 ounces. This rod broke a few years ago and I don't think they manufacture the model anymore. I'm now using an ODM Genesis 9' mod/fast action. I couldn't find a link to the specific model online, but here is an extremely similar 8'6" ODM rod which would probably work beautifully www.themightyfish.com/product...
Lure: Black Gibbs Wave Walker
Line: 40 pound braid www.themightyfish.com/product...
Leader: 40 pound Seagur Blue Label Fluorocarbon www.themightyfish.com/product...

@First Name Last Name i learned of the existence of a black gibb spook, the lure he used. He also showed how he retreived the spook, which is a slow/medium retreive with some jerk of the rod in a cadence. I never retreived my topwater lures like that, and I plan to try that next time. That's all what I found informational in this video.

Your retrieve is really interesting. Slower than I thought. Does that vary? Did you say this plug sinks?
@MyFishingCapeCod
@MyFishingCapeCod 3 года назад
In a calm, quiet spot like the one I'm fishing in this video, I've found that a slow and subtle retrieve works best. If I was fishing in rougher and windier conditions, or if the fish were blitzing, then I would speed it up. I don't remember exactly but I think the plug floats. If it does sink, then it sinks very slowly.

I make lures for a living and have often thought of making a striper plug that could filled with chum or oil ...what are your thoughts?
@MyFishingCapeCod
@MyFishingCapeCod 5 лет назад
Hi Todd 👋🏻I would consider casting a Danny plug style lure that was filled with menhaden oil. If you could master the "slow drip" of the oil, then it might work well with a plug like a Danny that just slowly slithers (and releases oil) across the surface. Honestly I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make in fish-catching ability, but it would be cool to try!
@lureup9973
@lureup9973 5 лет назад
My Fishing Cape Cod Yes I see. Back here in the Midwest in Tennessee we fish freshwater lakes for them we often find them in big schools 20 to 30 foot deep but not feeding I have thought of making a jigging bait that would be filled with chum or oil and maybe the Then it would trigger them to feed.
@MyFishingCapeCod
@MyFishingCapeCod 5 лет назад
Could be worth a try. I run into similar situations here on Cape Cod. Very often during the summer I'll find schools of stripers that are resting, not feeding. Usually I have to wait until a tide change, or until sunset or sunrise to trigger them to bite.

The longer rod makes it easy and simple to "walk the dog." A low sweep parallel to the surface of the water, followed by a second low sweep of the rod parallel to the water, will give it the right action. Nice and slow is usually best for striped bass.

Nice big striper very cool, Hey just a thought that you might consider is a cloth tape measure because they don't rust out or cut your fingers like a old rusty tape will. Most hardware stores sell them for less than 2 bucks and they last for a long long time. You can wash a cloth tape as well if it gets slimy which will destroy a regular metal tape.

I'd love to fish with you. I've watched a few before of your videos and seems that you usually use lighter tackle for your fishing style. I love doing the same. But bought the doc to get myself to bigger lures and a 10ft rod 1-5oz rated up to 50lb line and for me personally this is going to be a new fishing style for me. I usually use 9ft rods with 3500 reels with 30lb line for usually 5 inch topwater lures rated for 3/4-3oz lures and that's what I've used for last several years for comfort and my style fishing and preference. If your ever in the south east section of CT around the thames River let me k ow.

Reel can easily withstand a dunking in saltwater. Still silky smooth after 5 months of hard use. I hope that fish is still swimming (and growing) out there somewhere ;)

No doubt. I just makes me cringe when ever I get my reels wet. As much as I payed for them (especially my Van Staal) I try to keep the salt away from them as much as possible. Tight lines brother.

@MyFishingCapeCod
@MyFishingCapeCod 4 года назад
LOL, it survived! I still use it today and it works fine. I have had it serviced by Van Staal twice, which has definitely helped. No reel is 100% bulletproof but I'm happy with the VR's. If you watch some of my more recent videos then you will see the same reel being used. For example here's a link to a vid from Mexico last year ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gjhqV547lqA.html

Those are too easy. Seems like everyone who goes to cape cod mostly catch +40”. We get those a couple a year (in good years) here in the San Luis Reservoir of California. When i say a couple i meant only a couple are pulled out a year. We be lucky to catch one of those. 👍

Not at all, I regularly dunk my Van Staal in saltwater. You can also lay it down in the sand without having to worry about it, although I still try to avoid doing that.

Must be a good catch when you drop your thousand dollar reel in the water.
@MyFishingCapeCod
@MyFishingCapeCod 19 дней назад
The reason the reel costs $575 is so I can drop it in saltwater or sand and not worry about it. I actually don't even bother rinsing it in freshwater at the end of the day and I've used it for many years now. Worthwhile investment. ✌🏻

Hey Cary 👋I let my pole go into the water because it was the easiest thing to do at the time, and because the water was calm. If it was rough and wavy, I probably wouldn't of done that.

@MyFishingCapeCod
@MyFishingCapeCod 4 года назад
Couldn't tell ya Paul, that's just how it happened, but I definitely understand the benefits of your backing up technique. 👍
@michaelnice93
@michaelnice93 4 года назад
I was wondering that too, but perhaps in this case it pays off, if it was barely hooked the fish may have had some leverage at the shoreline and shake the lure off. Ryan did pull it in fast so that fish had plenty of fight in it. Also you you run the risk of tripping while backing up. Keeping it in the water is better for the fish. All things to consider.
