@@GeGe-gg3zt Because Bill Callahan (who might be the most brilliant living songwriter) wrote the tune. It's a cover. But, as much as I'm a fan of Callahan (and I'm a huge fan), I actually prefer Gill Scott-Heron's interpretation over the original.

My man, Gil Scott is a survivor! He has survived as a black man, a poet, a revolutionary, and an addict. I doubt he really knows how much he has influenced this nation and its art forms. He never got the bling and the fame of modern day artists, but his name is written in the heart of multitudes, May God bless you, brother!

He is no hobo. If you are to young to understand what he is saying, maybe that would help. But he is the acknowledged godfather of Rap. He was extremely important in the 70s. He later became addicted to drugs. His poetry and voice of awareness and civil liberties got him banned from radio sometimes. He still continued to write but if you listen, he is taking an opportunity to get the point of view that he has about life.

Gil Scott Heron is a vital part of the fabric woven together which we called the United States. His music was introduced to me in the mid seventies. Only recently had I returned to his zeal. His insight, and more his insights into American society. He championed lost causes, with courage and conviction, and hope! He is more relevant today than any other time in his career. He is still one of a kind. The closest artist who also spoke, and sang with poetic justice. Was Bob Dylan. I was wondering this week how is. Or even if he lived. He is a genuine American icon. The drugs came close to destroying him completely. I am grateful he lives, and is still capable of producing more just music. But you can easily see the toll drugs have had on him. I hope he is happy. If your reading this Gil Scott. Thank you!! What a sad, sad day(for those of us who cherish his message) it will be. When Sir Gil Scott passes on. He opened up many eyes. He belongs in the Hall of Fame. When he was a poet he was at his best. He was a warrior. From Vienna. All the best. And peace. God bless Gil Scott. Again, thanks for posting!! Revolution. Whities on the Moon. Steven.

You are a liar, he was always a heavy drug abuser...he would complain in his songs about people telling him to get off dope. He was not banned for his views, but for his methods which would incite violence against the non-melenated.

I only heard about Gil Scott-Heron in 2023. I love his music. He is deeply wise, and has clearly experienced a turbulent life of shame, guilt and regret. Yet he still holds his head high. He lives in the present and realises that each day he reborn. No matter far gone you are you can always turn around as many times as needed and begin a new life.

What a good song...Sounds like Gil is talking of his own life, No matter how far you go, you can always turn around. Anyone who knows Gil, knows that he's gone through a lot over the years but he's always been able to remain positive and come back from whatevers happened. Good luck Gil. Still my boy after all these years.

However, I think there are lessons--and simply good music to be enjoyed--for people of all kinds. He really brings out a gentle humility in this song. Love how he is shown carrying flowers. Makes me hope that he finally found intimate love in his troubled life after all the love he gave us. He and the band toured almost up til the very end. Many of us may not appreciate the sacrifices they made in their personal lives to do so and give us precious creative work and inspiration. Notice he very rarely ever used the word I altho this song is an exception. May the spirits always protect him.

Remembering listening to “We almost Lost Detroit” with my past van-dwelling “soon to be” fiancée, chain smoking blunts of weed I had snuck thru tsa and some from the wingate campus while gazing at the campus lights all night before a chain of events happened that led me back home. I could surely say, his music remains situational in the state of all situations, knowledge brings much grief but not every single time, and it also brings true happiness and awareness. ANYWAY HERE I did not become someone different That I did not want to be But I'm new here Will you show me around No matter how far wrong you've gone You can always turn around Met a woman in a bar Told her I was hard to get to know And near impossible to forget She said I had an ego on me The size of Texas Well I'm new here and I forget Does that mean big or small No matter how far wrong you've gone You can always turn around And I'm shedding plates like a snake And it may be crazy but I'm The closest thing I have To a voice of reason Turn around, turn around, turn around And you may come full circle And be new here again

This song echos the words in Gil's wrote in his poem "Don't Give Up". He wrote "Ain’t no way overnight to turn your life around, And this ain’t the conversation of someone that never falls back down, But no matter how long you’ve been on trial, With the days and weeks of self denial And no matter how many times you’ve tried to make it, And found out that right then you just couldn’t take it, And know that you can leave all your mistakes behind, The day that you “really make up your mind” .

I was on Pinterest and came across Gil Scott - Heron...looked familiar and the name sounded familiar so I decided to ck out one of his songs (poems)...something about him... and as I listened to this touched my heart...and that smile at the end...I guess I missed a truly amazing musician back in the day...but I will catch up!...moving...soul stirring...wow!

I just heard him for the first time a couple of minutes ago. Watching a documentary, I heard him sing for only a few seconds and knew that I wanted to hear more. I could listen to him for hours... he has such a mellow voice, but it was the lyrics which also drew me to him. The story of his life I guess.

Gil Scott really has come full circle. So grateful to be able to see that performance of him in his later years. He had my heart from the time I heard the This Is Madness album when he was still with the Last Poets. I was in 7th grade at the time. He was wildly popular in Los Angeles and well loved. Thanks to him and Brian Jackson.
