We continue our trip through season 1 of Girls Und Panzer with Part 2 of our analysis of the Oarai vs Pravda battle. As usual, this part will focus on the technical and tactical aspects of the battle.
This is the most dynamic battle of the show thus far, so there's a fair bit to discuss.
The second chance campaign for the upcoming military moe manga, Amaranth Angels, is now live on Indiegogo! Back it now to get in on the adventure. Cute anime girls starfighters, space battles, and more!

Make sure to check out the second chance campaign for my original manga, Amaranth Angels, over on Indiegogo! Think Girls Und Panzer, but with starfighters instead of tanks and with a somewhat heavier, space war/adventure plot. (But with a tone that’s still more on the positive, upbeat side. 😉) www.indiegogo.com/projects/amaranth-angels-second-chance-campaign#/

You know a RU-vidr is good when they make you appreciate a series more than you did before watching their videos

I personally think Katyusha ordered the Kv2 to hang back and guard their flag tank because realistically its their heaviest and slowest tank, so it would be near useless in a chase.

Of all the battles in this series, this was one of the best on a tactical standpoint. Both sides had amazing tactics, Katyusha made great use of her numbers and feigning retreat to allow for Oarai to fall into their trap while Oarai used bold strategies and effective intel gathering in order to overcome Pravda. And in the end it was a clever strategy and use of the strengths of both the tanks and girls themselves that won Oarai that day. Guts, boldness, and determination in the face of overwhelming odds, that's how Oarai won that match. Both sides were amazing and really shows just how far Oarai has come and can go. From almost losing due to overconfidence to pulling out the closest win they've had yet, Oarai really came far here in their tactics, strategies, and mindsets for each of the teams. And this just leaves one last match, the match against Kuromorimine at the climax of the tournament, where everything is on the line. The fate of Oarai will be decided on the field where both Nishizumi sisters cross cannons for the first and last time. The last battle to save Oarai, until Der Film. Another amazing analysis video, and of one of my favorite matches in the series. Really nice job here, well done Ascendant.

Good analysis of the Pravda battle!👍 For me, the Pravda Battle was my least favourite of the entire series because there were numerous contrivances that not only enabled Oorai to win, but caused the pacing to drag. Episode 8 had great action and historical references, and the revelation about the fate of Oorai if they lost was an effective cliffhanger. However, Episode 9 had 15 minutes excruciating melodrama and cringe before the battle finally resumed. I recognized the homages to the Battles of Stalingrad and Bastogne, the portrayals of the problems with hopelessness and low morale, and the virtue of perseverance. The problem was that it was only possible because Katyusha was too “hungry and sleepy” to finish off Oorai when she had them trapped, leading to the snail-paced melodrama in episode 9. It would’ve been better if it had been a more realistic factor, like a blizzard. When the battle finally resumed, Anzu’s shooting rampage was exciting and gratifying to finally see her take action and show what Turtle Team could do. However, Oorai’s breakout from the church was unrealistic and contrived. Firstly, why didn’t Pravda bombard the church immediately after Miho refused to surrender? Next, although Katyusha explained that she laid a trap for Oorai and didn’t expect them to attack her tanks head-on, it’s still implausible that all of Oorai’s tanks broke out of the front exit of the church without a single casualty. A more believable and impressive tactic would’ve been for Oorai to have laid down smoke in front of the church, used the B1 Bis as a battering ram and sacrificial lead tank, followed by the 38T going ham to disrupt Pravda’s formation and sow chaos and confusion. The remaining Oorai tanks either could’ve followed through the smokescreen, or could’ve blasted a hole in the side or rear of the church as an alternative exit for the flag tank to escape. The next issue was Pravda’s chase of Oorai’s flag tank across open ground was an unimaginative REPEAT of the Saunder’s battle - only in the snow and at night. The worst problem was that the Type-89 was the flag tank this time, instead of the faster 38T. I know that in Girls und Panzer, the Type 89 is misportrayed as a nimble scout tank, rather than a slow infantry support tank; realistically, it could never outrun the T-34’s. Rather than completely ignoring the speed issue, Miho could’ve used different tactics to mitigate Pravda’s superior numbers and firepower. Miho should’ve kept the Type 89 inside the town and maneuvered between buildings, making a lot of 90-degree turns, to break the line-of-sight of Pravda’s tanks, especially Nona’s IS-2 sniping. It also didn’t make sense that Pravda’s flag tank was kept so close to the battle. Katyusha had all of Oorai’s tanks trapped inside the church for 2 hours. She could’ve ordered Pravda’s flag tag to redeploy far away from the town, hiding it in a quiet corner of the battlefield, and Oorai never would’ve found it. Ultimately, Pravda lost because of Katyusha’s character flaws, which gave Oorai the reprieve they needed to regroup, repair their damaged tanks, and formulate a plan. Oorai did demonstrate some interesting tactics, and the climax of the battle was thrilling, with a great cliffhanger, but there were too many contrivances and pacing problems to call it a good battle.

To me there's not that much plot armour that you may think. First, while pressing the advantage would've been better, what can you do when the opponent's holding out in a building? Shoot it to ruins? Charge and get a pile up in front? At the end it'll still result in a waiting game, they have better chances at taking out the flag tank when it breaks out than waiting for a surrender or inconclusive battle. Katysha laid a trap for them for that scenario, she *expected* Ooarai to make a scouting party, she simply failed to predict Miho. On the "they should've lost some tanks" part : maybe, maybe not. At that rate, they should've lost tanks when getting surrounded too, and we'll never end the "should've been, could've been, would've been". So far, I can agree on the Pravda flag tank position part. While I'm sure battlefield restriction area prevented her from placing it too far, further precautions would have been welcomed as opposed to rely on a handful of bodyguards. As for the actual breakthrough, while the scene is a mere repetition of Saunders, it's better than running around in a town full of OPFOR that can easily corner you with numbers - but she should've aimed for a forest instead, which will obstruct vision, slow down pursuer and take advantage of the smaller body of the Ooarai flag tank. As for the melodrama it's just exposition get over it, all episodes can't be just full on action time each time. But I can see why it'd tire someone tho.

@@breizhrudie4757 It makes “Katyusha-sense” that she requested Oorai’s surrender after trapping them all inside the church, which is why Pravda didn’t bombard the church. But after the 2-hour ceasefire and Miho refused to surrender, there was no longer a reason for Katyusha to hold fire - especially when she expressed that she just wanted to get the battle over with. The obvious reason why Oorai’s tanks suffered damage but none were knocked out was a plot contrivance to enable ALL of Oorai’s team members to be present when the Student Council informed them that winning the tournament was their only hope of preventing their schooling from being shut down. Executing the breakout from the church was overly simplistic and demonstrated no tactical prowess from Miho or anyone else. It was “dumb luck” (plot armour) that enabled them to breakout without suffering a single loss. Considering that neither the Mallard nor Rabbit Teams played a critical role for the remainder of the battle, other than getting shot while protecting Duck Team, it would’ve been better if the B1 Bis had led the breakout and been sacrificed to enable the others to escape. In WWII, Soviet tank crews had relatively low accuracy and rates of fire; if the B1 Bis had literally tanked all of their shots before being taken out, it would’ve been more plausible that the other Oorai tanks escaped before Pravda’s crews could reload and shoot again. The battlefields in GuP are fairly large; we know this because in every match, the two teams start on opposite sides of the battlefield and are shown driving for a while before they clash somewhere in the middle. At the very least, they were far enough apart that Pravda could sing their song for around 2 minutes before encountering Oorai’s tanks, which were driving directly at them. That implies the battlefield is many kilometres length and it would’ve been easy for Katyusha to relocate the flag tank and hide it, especially at night. Historically, Soviet tanks have superior mobility over open ground, especially in cold and snowy conditions, whereas they’ve struggled in urban warfare, suffering heavy losses. Oorai has demonstrated multiple times at how good they are at using tanks in urban environments so it would’ve made more sense for them to play to their strengths - especially after the 38(t)’s great distraction. It would’ve been clever if Oorai had either left their flag tank hiding in the church, or circled around and hid it inside the church again. Any plan was better than the Type 89 trying to “outrun” Soviet tanks across a snowy plain. At least if the Type 89 had tried scooting between buildings, its speed wouldn’t have been so glaringly unrealistic. The melodrama filling time in the middle of the 9th episode would’ve been more tolerable if it had been parts of the Winter War! OVA instead of what we got. Also, it would’ve been more clever if the Anglerfish Dance served as a distraction or delaying tactic to confuse Katyusha and Pravda, rather than the “morale boost” to motivate Oorai - CRINGE! - and didn’t make sense because of how embarrassed they all were to do it the first time. It just felt unbearably cartoon-y. The Pravda Battle was ok overall but just minor tweaks would’ve made it so much better!

Now I'm really wondering how long matches could be... I mean in the Oorai vs Chihatan it seems like the match was a whole night long
