RIP James. I hear he was a great guy. What happened was tragic. Really glad he had the wherewithal to capture this moment. I watched the Woodstock 94 NIN performance with a friend on live TV, and this was the only band we really cared about the entire day. I barely remember any of the other performances, but will never forget them coming out covered in mud, with the ferocity they did. Whether planned or not- who cares. It effing worked. Most things that are good publicity are planned. For example, people throwing shit on stage/at the band. It's a great way to take a break or only play a song halfway. Hypes the audience to high hell when the band suddenly gets a chance to act macho. Two that come to mind are Marilyn Manson with water bottles and KISS with laser pointers. Totally fake.

Clips from this show were in every single household for weeks, the news, radio station djs, even late night talk show hosts were talking about it. Everyone was talking about it. Up until that point the world had never seen anything like that, not even close, and it blew everyone away. I love Trent then and do now but like Kurt before him he is contradictory in a lot of ways throughout his early career. Fact he is ripping bands and fans of Aerosmith, Metallica, Santana, and CS&N while he’s meticulously planning on how cover themselves in mud and present (and sell!) a whole image and act so they can go down in history is hysterical. This performance WAS and IS legendary and his plan worked but in retrospect there was no need to worry about or compete with the other bands - just do your thing, man.
