An experiment with melting a broken beer bottle on a ceramic piece. I hope you enjoy.

If you haven't seen them, Jonthepotter recently put up another nice video on the recycled glass coasters he makes. Check it out here: • The Truth about Mixing...

great work just in, very educational! if you ever want to get a nice clean line when you break a bottle, after scoring it, you can create a temperature gradient to stress the glass and cause it to crack along that line of least resistance that the scored line provides. some people do this by soaking a piece of string in a flammable liquid, tying it around the bottle at the score line and setting it on fire, waiting for it to burn out, then dipping the whole bottle in an ice bath. you can also submerge the bottle, mouth first, into hot water up to the score line, leave it until you hear it start to clink, then put the whole bottle in an ice bath or cold water (this is my preferred method). some people even made a really cool bottle cutting machine using two 12V glow plugs (?) from an old car, which heat the bottle at the score line as it's turned. anyway this has become a very long comment but the point is thank you for the video lol

I’m curious to know what a straight cut with the bottle will look like? I’m sure it’ll still have a drippy effect.

Very cool, I love how the glass interacted with the glaze.

Interestingly (at least it was for me) if you put a 16d nail point side down in a bottle with your finger over the opening and give it a vigorous shake a dozen times or so the bottom of the bottle pops off pretty cleanly most of the time.

Very interesting !!!! this needs a revisit. For a clean cut, light a socked string tied around the bottle, then light the string and when the flame is off just tap the bottle to break the glass at the string line. For a clean glaze break line the pedestal and the leg of the piece needs to be exactly at the same vertical level. Mix almer glue with alumina powder 50% and coat the piece leg to the pedestal. After firing breaking it use a burner to heat the pedestal lightly until you hear the glaze expanding with a bing sound. Then stop and tap the pedestal to seperate them. I'm not sure how to reduce the crazing issue though.

With all due respect...there is no such thing as "vertical level". There is plumb and there is level. you're saying something akin to "a square sphere"

I saw a crystal glaze video where they heated the bottom of the catch basin until it made a ping sound, indicating that the glaze was ready to break free, then used a rawhide hammer. It saved on the amount of grinding needed.

Bisque ware is used for glass slumping so this can really work but with much lower temperature.

That looks really cool! I'm surprised the brown bottle still looks blue except where it pooled below. I wonder if firing it cooler would reduce the running?
@JustinsMakery
@JustinsMakery 5 лет назад
Thanks! I think the green glaze was powerful enough to mute out the brown in the glass. Firing on the glaze first so it fully matures, and then a second firing at a much lower temp to slump the bottle over the top would be a fun experiment.

Interesting how the brown glass goes green over the sea foam glaze. Especially like the edges between glass over glaze and plain glaze

you probably already know this, but a fairly consistent way of getting pretty neat break in bottles is to wrap some string or twine around it and soak it with lighter fluid or similar and then lighting and rotating the bottle until it burns out before dunking it in some ice water

Thanks. I've seen it done on video, but haven't been able to get it to work myself.

After scoring the glass if youd have used a torch to warm it then just tapped it it would have broken more cleanly. Also, if you would have used a torch to warm the area between the pedestal and the vase until you heard a pop then tapped the catch pan lightly it would have came off cleaner.

Subbed! Happy to find this, but I was looking if folks have built pottery with embedded pieces of clear glass in the walls so you can look inside without opening it. I know pottery shrinks during firing so all the bets are off. Maybe a fun experiment to try? ;-)

Probably look pretty cool if you did it with Blue Glass or clay slip dipped in crushed blue glass
