This is a second attempt at melting mason jars onto pottery in an electric kiln. I think I'm getting over this idea. Not sure. Be sure to let me know what you think.
I think these experiments are valuable and definitely not a waste of time. Not only are you learning a lot along the way, you're saving many of us the time and materials necessary to maximize our own efforts using similar techniques. I genuinely appreciate you sharing the learning curve. Besides that, a lot of the nuances and subtleties of the resulting colors, patterns and blemishes I find to be pleasant or at least inspirational enough to ponder. Thanks, man. Cheers!
I think that these experiments are coming out better and better. To comment on this particular piece: awesome! I appreciate you taking the time to develop the process. I would like to know more about your firing temperatures and times. I do sculpture and want to incorporate glass into them. You have definitely been a good guide thus far.
Looks amaaaaazing😍 I tried glass on bisque before on decorative plates and i liked the cracked glass effect. Next time i will try over the glaze. Thank you so much giving inspiration and sharing with us.
If you put glass on top of a ceramic glaze and fire to cone 10 the result will be a mixing of the two resulting in sometimes interesting colors and patterns. There will be crazing making the pot not food safe.
I actually don’t care for the final effect - the salt & pepper look. But I love your showing us the video! I’d be interested to see what happens with chunks of colored glass.

I love your glass experments there so interisting. I think that since the glass it self fells so chaotic, you should add more order else where, like having the red on the last peace in one of the groves over just squirts on it. Just probally a bad idea, love your work!

Definitely NOT garbage! This looks like an incomplete process, needing just a little bit more refinement and experiment to realise the great potential. Inspiring stuff, indeed!
If you put glass on top of black glaze the color will have disappeared at cone 10. All you will see will be a line showing the border where the glass melted. A technique you can use is wax resist the area where you want to place the glass. The glass will go directly on the ceramic. You should have better result if you put the glass on top of a light shade glaze like white or light blue.

I think it looks unique and colourful and I think it is definitely a valuable piece of work and I don’t understand why don’t you like it. I think you can definitely sell it at reasonable price.
I really like it. I think the pieces are very interesting. I also think that they have a lot of character. Keep going. You never know what you will come up with. Also, i did like the blue one better before you did the glass on it.
I don’t think you’re wasting your time, because it seems as though it has some real ease of application points but it’s predictability is still questionable. Keep exploring though!
Pretty amazing. I noticed that on the piece you put glass on then bisque fired tgen glaze fired after it was smooth. I wonder if you did that first then added some glaze on top of the glass for a glaze firing if it might solve you issues. Keep up the videos
That piece looks more than interesting enough to proceed with testings in my opinion. It's your time, effort and money though but it feels like there are endless possibilities whit this since there are a lot of factors that can be slightly altered that would result in a different outcome and I personally think it's a technique that is worth exploring. Here in Spain and also in some South American countries this technique is called Vitrofusion but I don't know anyone that really knows much about it, I have found a few artisans that have been experimenting for some time with different ways to combine the two materials but other than that I haven't found really any information related to its origins either... I speculate that it's not a new technique per-se, it's very possible the Egipcians experimented with it, but it's undoubtedly a quite obscure and underdeveloped one, possibly due to the unpredictable nature of each outcome, but in my opinion a very fascinating one for that very same reason. The only way to really push this technique forward and make it less volatile and unpredictable is by experimenting and even if you're only doing this as a hobby or out of pure curiosity I believe it's blessing for the art of Pottery and clay work in general that people like you take your time and effort to quench your curious nature and also decide to share your experiments and findings with the world.
As a fused glass artist, just starting to play with mud, I find this very interesting. I wonder what my glass would do? Does your clear glass drip into the inside of the pot?

Those little glass jars seem to have a large volume of glass; wonder if you glass-cut them so you had only 1/2 inch of jar, like a band, that could be used.
I would think that the Ball Jar glass is a harder glass than you might want to use. I would try a 97 coefficient glass say from Olympic color. Or you might try a stain glass from a hobby store. They tend to be softer glass. Drinking glasses and or mason jars are just to stiff for what you are trying to do.
hey man, I think that piece looks great ! I liked it before the glass melt. The only thing I see is it needs a little grinding on the bottom. perhaps another "happy accident" ?
Sorry for this silly question. If I make the backyard clay and the use crushed glass as glaze, would that work as a non-porous surface that holds water? can you do like a decent mug with those two materials?
I don't think that crushed glass would be my go-to for a glaze. It's tendency to craze would be my concern. A very thin slip coating with your finest clay and then burnish it with a plastic bag before firing would be my move.
That red glaze added looks awful as a few spots. If you do the red on top again go whole hog on the red. It would look amazing with the mottled effect consistent over the surface. The glass effect looked fine and more experiments would be great to see.
The glass will eventually crack because the COE of the glass will be different than COE of the glaze. The internal stress that the glass is under due to that will cause an eventual crack.
I don't think you are wasting your time. But I am not sure what you are trying to achieve when you add the red to things. It seems to never really show?
