That hug is twice as heart-touching when you know that Gene Wilder and Peter Ostrum were friends in real life too. They even shared a candy bar. By all intents and purposes, Willy Wonka and Charlie Bucket's friendship was real, at least in a sense.

David Selzter, who helped write the screenplay (though uncredited) said that Gene's likeability and warmth went a long way since in the book, Wonka is portrayed as a more mysterious and more creepy figure that we see on screen (think of the boat ride scene, stretched to an entire book) Sad to say, Johnny Depp's inferior portrayal is considered a more accurate version of Dahl's Wonka than Wilder's version. Interesting fact- David Selzter late wrote and directed the Melanie Griffith-Michael Douglas drama Shining Through, which means he is the one responsible for "taste my strudel"

It really drives home the point that the factory was a invention of Wonka’s childlike wonder and imagination. Due to their adventure, they’re able to see the beauty of the mundane world with a new perspective, rather than having the factory be this supernatural paradise that renders the outside world unfulfilling by comparison.

@BritishCommentWriter
@BritishCommentWriter 9 лет назад
Kristian Jackson Roald Dahl hated the Gene Wilder adaptation so much that he stopped them from adapting the sequel novel, "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator". The Burton version was made by giving Dahl's widow, Felicity, and daughter, Lucy, total control over the directors, writers and actors and is far closer to the original book.
@EggPlanet492
@EggPlanet492 9 лет назад
BritishCommentWriter I doubt that last bit somewhat. Tim Burton is a very headstrong director with a clear vision of where to take his movies. It's been a long time since I've read the book, but I don't remember the remake getting very close to the original tone either. It still very much feels like a Burton film, more than anything, and for better or for worse.
@Jopo1226
@Jopo1226 9 лет назад
***** The only thing I recall being the same in the book as the movie was the squirrel scene with Veruca Salt, The kids being shown in their altered state, and the fact Charlie's Dad was alive and working in a factory screwing on toothpaste caps. Everything else was modernized such as Mike Teavee playing video games.
@BritishCommentWriter
@BritishCommentWriter 9 лет назад
Jopo1226 Well this thing is primarily being made for modern children. The idea that in a 2005 film you would pay someone to screw on toothpaste caps is silly enough by itself, but a child being obsessed with TV would have had seriously confused 21st century children and turned them off. Just like it would have been if the book had been about a kid obsessed with radio.
@BritishCommentWriter
@BritishCommentWriter 9 лет назад
***** I mistyped a little. I meant to say that the Dahl family were given total control over the CASTING of the directors, writers and actors, and would have to be satisfied with the overall outline of the film before they signed off on it. But here's the thing. Burton and Dahl are very much cut from the same cloth. They both like to find delight and wonder in the grotesque. Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice are the kind of things I could see Dahl writing.

Charlie in the new one is almost TOO saintly, and as such isn't an obtainable goal for children to look up to. In the original, Charlie does have moments of frustration, which is a good subtle message for kids: "It's okay to be upset at times, as long as you keep your heart in the right place and stay true."

@NickZephyr
@NickZephyr 8 лет назад
There was a reason for that. His father was an absolute dick to him. He wouldn't let him eat chocolate. So he ran away. Living with parents like that make you believe that all parents are like that. Which was why he was the way he was, until Charlie went with him to visit his father again and they made up. Then he took Charlie's whole entire house as well as his family and put them inside the factory.

To put to rest the Dahl case: Dahl signed off on all but a few small details of the script in this movie. The last lines, beginning with, "Don't forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he ever wanted..." were some of the very few bits not directly approved by Dahl. That's not to say that he couldn't have been disappointed with the finished product, just that nearly all of the script was approved. (The approved script had Grandpa Joe just shouting with happiness, but it was suddenly decided that something extra was needed, and the head writer came up with this wonderful exchange on demand in just a few minutes.) Not necessarily to put down the newer film, but to those of us who grew up with this one, no remake or new plot can match this, with its slightly dated feel but with more approachable special effects that don't rely on "you can do anything with CGI" and some very sweet acting, both from people who went on to great acting careers (like Wilder) and from ones who did not (Peter Ostrum).

To me Willy Wonka represents the spirit that tries to push you past your intellect. Equal parts ominous and inviting, he has more power in the story than anyone because it's HIS world because HE chooses to make it. This scene almost feels like Gene Wilder is passing the "baton of silliness" to the next generation, as if to say "Keep things silly while I'm away, never loose sight of the beauty of nonsense. You have the same capacity for wonder and imagination as I do, you're the masters of your own story because it's you who is deciding to tell it. You can even eat the dishes."

Tim Burton's version was simply too dull and melodramatic. The Burton characters were boring and passive and had no likable personalities, Charlie's character in the Burton version was downright uninteresting, you barley even see any of him during the film. It simply was a lame attempt to pay tribute to this version which had all the charm and lovability of characters and wit and dialogue. This version simply nailed all the needed character quality and cinematic presence to make it a classic forever.

The 1971 film gives Charlie a role to play. In the book and Burton film, the only reason he wins is because he doesn't actually do anything. He doesn't interact with anything in the factory really. The 1971 film had Charlie make a mistake instead of being inactive. One of my problems with Roald Dahl's work is that his characters are either all good or all bad. There never seems to be in-between. The 1971 film has Charlie be good but still not perfect. He gets sad, he gets angry, he gets jealous and he can even be a little greedy. But it doesn't make him a bad kid, it just makes him a normal kid. Wonka setting up all the kids with the guy pretending to be Slugworth offering them riches to betray Wonka is his ultimate test. It's safe to assume that had the other children made it to the end of the tour they would have made the choice to give Slugworth the Gobstopper. Charlie giving Wonka the gobstopper back even right after Wonka yells at him and denies him the final reward was the determining factor on whether or not Charlie was going to win. It gave Charlie not only a more prominent role to play, but something to prove, it gave him more dimension, it made him more realistic and it makes his victory more earned. The book Charlie and Burton Charlie are all good selflessness and nothing else.
